“Convenient, non-concrete happy hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 November 2008

This is quite a modern hotel but it does have character. This is no concrete box but a well-designed hotel that fits into it's surroundings.

Most of Funchal's hotels are quite a way from the city centre. Sure, you can get a taxi or bus (the 7 day rover ticket is great value, as long as you can cope with the high-speed driving!) but having the option of walking in (about 10 mins) is a real plus for this hotel.

We had a junior suite. It was a bit more expensive but it meant that we had an extra room - handy as we had our 10 month old daughter with us! The mini-kitchen facilities in the room were brilliant (just a fridge, sink and double hob but they gave us freedom!)

The hotel's own restaurants are expensive but with the kitchen facilities and proximity to the city it doesn't matter. Breakfast was included and was an extensive buffet that set us up very well for the day!

The staff were all excellent and happy to assist.

The best thing I can say is that when we return to Funchal in a few years time, we will be looking to stay at this hotel again.

A very pleasant stay at the Miramar in a studio apartment. Room was very pleasant, balcony quite small. There are 2 pools, we just stayed at the Mirimat pool, availablity for sunbeds was quite tight later in the afternoons.

Thoroughly enjoyed holiday, great location - a 10 min easy walk into Funchal.

Reception staff very friendly. Pool side staff at Mirimar were very hard to find when you wanted an icecream!

Only really issue was invasive 'entertainment' that pestana seem to have in their resorts each night, at the Mirimar was outside and echoed around the hotel until the early hours!

Would definately revisit.

Stayed at the Miramar first two weeks in June.Room very clean, as was bathroom.Nice sitting area with sofa & dining table. Balcony not very large, but enough room to sit for breakfast, one table with two reclining chairs.Hotel grounds well kept, colourful as is most of Madeira.Hotel in good area in between town and hotel zone.We stayed here as a timeshare exchange.Three restaurants on site.Best restaurants we ate in were Dom Amelias, out of hotel turn left to town over bridge to the Pestana Carlton to your right(bar opposite serving reasonable priced drinks)bear left past an Indian restaurant(quite good)down past Moynihans bar100 yards on right.Nice atmosphere in Moynihans with very reasonable food.Good meal at the Jardin de Infante(over Bridge & keep on main road100 yards on left. But the best value meal we've had probably anywhere for quality and price was the Terrace de Ajuda.Come out of the Miramar and turn right to the hotel zone past The Village entrance 200 yards first right second restaurant on left, can't miss it Parrotts outside.Go for the set menu (nearly everything off the a'la carte). While we were looking at the menu outside we were offered a Madeira wine, after being seeted a complimentary taster of lamb, smoked salmon to start fish kebabs main(could'ny eat desert, 12.95 euros with wine and lagers, crazy.Oh,and brandy, whisky or madeira wine to finish.Neadless to say we ate here a few times.Only found it our second week. Not many bars about. If your staying at the Miramar nice early evening cocktail party(think its on Tuesdays(complimentary)not sure if it was for timeshare crowd.Nobody would know.Mostly older crowd at our hotel.Well equiped gym.Two nice pools. All in all we had a really good time, but do not expect much nightlife. If your there in june there are firwork displays from different countries each saturday evening through June (10.00p.m) absolutely brilliant, down at the harbour.Get there about nine for a good spot.Did the west tour, great guide, very interesting.Book it at your hotel(you will see lots of places selling trips which look very cheap but this is only with a ticket from a timeshare presentation.

The Pestana Miramar leaves you with mixed feelings. A good hotel that somehow could be much better.

Our room was fine, nothing special. If anything maybe a little bit dated. It may be worth noting that it doesn't have air con. Just a ceiling fan, that we found adequate.

The pool areas are good and we never had any difficulty in getting sunbeds on the couple of days we decided to stay in the hotel. (The other days we hired a car and drove all over the island, something I would recommend rather than doing the day trips available everywhere)

The breakfast was disappointing and we only had it a couple of times. I had a sandwich by the pool one day which was fresh and tasty. Although it seemed a little over priced compared to the other places we ate. The drinks we had in the hotel were also the most expensive we had during our stay.

We didn't experience the evening entertainment in the hotel. The hotel, and Maderia seem to cater for an older clientele. We're in our thirties so weren't looking for clubs, but everything on the island seems to close about half past ten on a night! Apart from the casino which is being refurbished so not at it's best.

Maderia is a lovely island and the hotel was pleasant enough. However I don't think we'll be running back until we're nearer retirement!

Having stayed at several excellent hotels in Madeira this was our first time at the Miramar. The hotel has many good points such as the convenient position, the excellent pools and gardens, and the friendliness of the staff. Nevertheless, there were aspects of our stay which left much to be desired. We had a superior studio and had requested a sunny balcony if possible. In the event we were allocated a room with no sun whatsoever. The reception promised to contact us after the first week and change our room but we heard nothing further.
The kitchenette was poorly equipped. There was only one cooking utensil, no frying pan, no soup/cereal dishes etc. The table was small and one got the impression that they did not actually want you to cook in the kitchen!
About three or sometimes four nights a week they advertised dancing to live music. However, there was no proper dance-floor, just an unevenly tiled area which was unsuitable for proper dancing and possibly dangerous if anyone tripped on the tiles.
Breakfasts were a disappointment to any traveller who has experienced a good 4 star breakfast. There was a poor choice of both tinned and fresh fruit and the hot-plates did not look too inviting.
On booking out we noticed an additional 24 Euros on our bill. We were told that this was the charge for having the key to the small safe which is in the room's wardrobe. Almost £20 just to use a very small safe-box in the room seemed totally uncalled for and was not appreciated.
I put these views in a letter to the Manager and, without being specific, she has promised to review and address some of these matters.
As originally stated, the hotel has many very good points and I'm sure that most people enjoy their stay. Nevertheless, it really does let itself down on the above points and, if they are rectified, it will then be worth its 4 stars.

Nice hotel, clean and well maintained, staff friendly and efficient and all that we encountered fluent in English. Check in and out faultless.

Location - Up hill just outside Funchal, easy walk into the centre nice gardens on the way but if you have trouble walking buses stop just outside, is cheaper to get a swipe card than buying individual tickets, newagents outside the hotel main gate to the right can top it up.
Room - Had a ground floor room looking out over pool area, clean and comfortable, mini kitchen area useful for making tea, but fridge in our room not the best. Have to pay for lock at reception to use safe. TV had several English channels not just the usual news ones. As pariahs that smoke and now book holidays only to destinations and hotels where we can, we were a little put out to find out that Portugal & Madeira have now jumped on the band wagon & we could not even smoke in our room, such is life - we are used to being second class citizens, at least the weather is nice enough that we could use our terrace. Room cleaned each day but timings rather erratic, our room was next to cleaning station so we often seemed to be left until last.
Hotel grounds - Extensive and clean, a couple of outdoor pools and an indoor one, had no difficulty getting sunbeds but suspect it might be harder in season. Nice coffee served at main pool, snack menu limited but what we tried was nice enough and not too expensive. Pool towels provided by hotel.
Food - Were on B & B basis, ate breakfast a few times, was adequate but nothing special so did not always bother, Had dinner in hotel three nights two excellent meals, one indifferent - on last night wife asked for steak on skewer medium rare, got well done, I asked for fillet steak with I think garlic, came in what appeared to be a salt sauce. Waiters polite but seemed embarrassed and avoided us after we mentioned this, no offer to put right. Had a nicer steak in Irish pub across the road to the right for far less another night.
Bar - Quiet, nice cocktails, good barman, sat outside so we could smoke.
Extras we liked - hotel has a small library and if you have a method of playing them i.e laptop or portable DVD can rent you DVDs as well, would have been handy if we had travelled with our children.
Tip for other pariahs - none of the tobacconists in Funchal seem to take credit cards so make sure you have enough cash if you want to stock up, the only place we found that did was the airport.

  • Liked — Being able to relax.
  • Disliked — Ban on smoking in rooms.

A good hotel with nice gardens - not difficult on Madeira - and a convenient location not too far from the middle of Funchal. Staff were friendly, the kitchenette in the room was very useful and the standard of service good. The low rise nature of the hotel gives a good atmosphere and the balcony was reasonably spacious. Our balcony, unfortunately did not get the sun at any point of the day.

However the room was a bit noisy - walls and ceilings did not provide much sound insulation. Breakfast, I thought, was a bit below standard for this class of hotel. Not everything was available each day; the fruit juice was poor and the made up muesli with rice crispies on some days has to be one of the most unpleasant sights I have seen in a hotel buffet!

  • Liked — LOcation; gardens; friendly staff; kitchenette
  • Disliked — Dull breakfast; noise from other rooms
