My husband and I have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel staying on the B+B option. This was a good choice as there are plenty of good eateries within walking distance (even if you are sad and want mcdonalds and pizza hut without even trying the lovely Madeiran cuisine). We chose to eat at Mozart restaurant just down from the hotel on the Saturday evening where they do a set menu for 35 euros per person which included wine throughout the meal and coffee well worth the money but make sure you book as very popular. Our room overlooked a square where people played cards and dominoes during the day and evening which always seemed to attract a decent viewing audience and was also next to the cable car station. If you decide to go on the cable car to the gardens they are very hilly so be prepared (toboggan ride very good but not as fast as you would think though). There were plenty of cruise ships coming in and out during our stay which we were aware of as the Hotel provided a board telling you of the ships arriving so you could plan not to go up on cable cars on those days as it would be a lot busier. The weather was great while we were there and there was no problem with finding a free sunbed and parasol as there seemed to be enough for everyone even though the hotel was full.I would definately recommend this hotel and it was nice not to have to put up with kids running about and taking over the pool (no under 16 allowed at hotel ).Hotel and grounds kept spotless. We would book a sea view next time even though we could see the sea if you looked to the left of the balcony We never had any problem with the timeshare people we were told about it quickly at the welcome meeting but there was no pressure at all we even went over to the other resort and weren't even approached there. We did go on a jeep safari on the Friday for the full day which covered the north side of the island with some fantastic views over the island and excellent driving and commentary from our guide Dennis.

This was our first visit to Madeira and we were so glad we chose this hotel.
The hotel is very conveniently located in the old town of Funchal and next to the cable car station.
On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by friendly reception staff, but unfortunately had to wait an hour for our room, even though other guests who arrived with us went straight to theirs.
Our room (204) appeared to be one of the best situated in the hotel and had a full sea view overlooking the incoming cruise ships.
The pool bar was supposed to close at 6.00pm,but sometimes seemed to close at random earlier times.
We were on half board arrangements, but wished that we had booked B&B and then had some meals in the hotel and some in the many surrounding restaurants. The food in the hotel was very good and varied and we enjoyed most of the meals, they even managed to cook the breakfast bacon ok for the Brits.
The sun terrace on the third floor was a peaceful oasis and worth spending time there.
The promenade is accessed easily from the rear of the hotel and you can walk to the yellow fort in one direction and to the harbour and beyond in the other.
Because this was our first time in Madeira we used Thomson for the combined trip package, which included visits to the west of the island then the east and finally the Nuns Valley in the centre. These may have been slightly expensive, but were well organised with an expert guide (Grace) and plenty of stops and very good lunches on the first two trips.
The Thomson rep.(Paula) was very good, friendly and a credit to the company.
The only negatives were, partially the weather. We had some rain, wind and it was fairly cool the first part of the week. The Porto Bay group used quite persistent techniques to sell time share and the rep. was present at the Thomson meeting and also followed up with discount vouchers under the room door and even a telephone call to the room. I know they have a job to do,but to be contacted on four occasions is over the top.
In summary,we loved the hotel and the island and will return to this hotel which was well run and good value for money for its quality and location.

Room Tip: Ask for a high sea view room with views of the harbour and cruise ships

Dear Guest,

thank you very much for reviewing Porto Santa Maria. We are very glad you enjoyed your stay with us and consider us for a next visit to Madeira. Regarding the points you mentioned about waiting for your room while others that arrived after went straight up. We have three room types in the hotel and I suppose on that day your Sea view room only got ready later than a garden view room from another guest that arrived after you. Also about the promenade closing time, as you refer you had a bit of rain during your stay. We always close the poolside side bar at 18h but if it rains (as there is no protection from the rain outside) we close it and open the indoor bar earlier in order to provide our guest with an open bar at any hour of the day.

We hope to see you soon and welcome you back to our hotel.

Best Regards

My parents and I had a lovely week at this hotel. There was a bit of a confusion when we first arrived as we had paid for a sea view and were given a room with barely a sea view but excellent disabled facilities (I am disabled). However, we decided that we could manage without these facilities and asked to be moved and were given a room looking out to sea, and we could sit on our balcony and watch the cruise ships come and go. I'm sure the hotel was just trying to be helpful when they allocated us the first room, but its something to be aware of if you are disabled and pick a sea view, as I don't know if you'd get the facilities and a sea view.

The staff were very friendly and the hotel is maintained to a high standard. Everywhere was very clean and the garden and the pool area were always tidy and attractive. We were there over Easter and there were real live easter chicks and easter bunnies in the foyer, which was nice.

We were on a flexi-dine package so we were half board for three nights and B&B for 4 nights. Breakfast and dinner were both really nice, with dinner being themed every night. We never had a bad meal, and there's free champagne for breakfast. You could also have lunch instead of dinner for flexi-dine and could chose which nights you stayed, you just had to put your name down before 5pm. We ate at the pool bar two lunchtimes but on the second lunchtime service was quite slow, but I think that was because everyone had come at once then Dad confused them with his order!

In my opinion, the best thing about this hotel was its location. Its in the Old Town of Funchal, away from the main hotel area but has a lot more atmosphere, e.g. you know you're in Madeira whereas in the hotel area you could be in any resort. As its right near the sea, its fairly flat compared to the rest of Madeira, and it was a flat walk either into Funchal or to the bars and restaurants just behind of the hotel. These bars and restaurants were great and we had a lovely meal.

Location is important if you have mobility difficulties. Madeira is VERY hilly and the paths are cobbled so pushing a wheelchair is difficult. In and around the hotel is fine, but in the main hotel area there were steep hills down to the sea or the city centre, and I had to get out my chair and walk several times. We did a trip to Nun's Valley and Monte on the Saturday and although I took my chair, I couldn't use it! The hotel is wheelchair friendly though!

There were two minor negative points we found in the hotel:

1) Staff in the restaurant and especially the pool area were slow to clean up empty cups and plates. We'd order coffee in the morning and the cups would still be there when we left at 5pm. This isn't because the staff were lazy, they were always doing something, so maybe more staff are needed.

2) They were eager to push the timeshare apartments in their sister hotel in the hotel district. In our first 3 days we were treated to a sales push at our welcome meeting, an invite to a drinks reception and a telephone call asking if we knew about it. Just a leaflet in our room would have been sufficient! They also told us the offer was exclusive to Thomas Cook customers (you got a £20 Thomas Cook voucher if you went) but so did Thomson customers!

All in all, we had a lovely holiday and we will definitely be going back!

Room Tip: Try and get a room either overlooking the garden or the sea

Dear Guest,

On behalf of the Porto Santa Maria Team we thank you for your nice review. We have duly noted the points that you refer that could be done in a better way, we are glad you pointed them out in order for us to improve in the future. We do provide rooms with disabled facilities both with garden view and with sea view, the room you were first allocated is a sea view room. But we are glad that at the end you were satisfied with the new room option that was provided.
We hope you visit us again as we will be very happy to welcome you back.

Best regards,

André Caldeira

Recommended by trusted friends, we checked out the Trip Advisor reviews and booked up.
The Reception area was done out beautifully for Easter, with a giant Easter egg with live chicks in it! The reception staff were friendly and efficient, our room was overlooking the gardens, which were beautifully maintained, we asked if a sea view room was available, but these rooms were all taken well in advance. Although disappointed at this we were impressed with our room, spotlessly clean, with plenty of room.
We had the B&B option but decided to go for dinner on three evenings, and we were not disappointed, the buffet was excellent, with a different theme each night. Breakfast was also excellent covering all tastes.
The hotel gardens were beautifully maintained, and there is easy access to the promenade, with a pleasant walk to the harbour area.
The Hotel is in the old town area, and all the adjacent streets have loads of character, excellent restaurants and bars.
What was the icing on the cake for us on this holiday was the service at the hotel, a really nice team of people, nothing was too much trouble, one or two minor problems, quickly sorted!(special mention for Lina).
A great week, we'll be back!

This was the first holiday in Madeira for a long time and found it lovely although not so I want to visit every year. Friends however rave over Madeira. The Hotel Porto Santa Maria was excellent, pleasant spacious rooms, ours having a kitchette and with balcony. View from balcony was over park along the street which was quite noisy late at night when local congegated for socialising. Friends had one over looking garden which was better. The inside of the hotel was spacious and really nice and staff as usual were friendly. The breakfasts were really good with wide range of hot and cold dishes. The hotel had a spa, inside pool which looked good but we didn't use it. There is entertainment which is supposed to be good but didn't attend so can't say. The hotel is in a good position within easy walking distance to the town especially the cable car. It is right by the sea although there isn't any beach in Funchal really. The hotel is close to the old town which is quite quaint but slightly run down. There are many restaurants close to the hotel. These are quite good and reasonable priced. Maybe limited if one has high standards but probably smarter ones further into the town. The patio at the rear of the hotel was very pleasant alhough not necessarily to rave about. We participated in a triple tour, going to western Madeira, eastern Madeira and the Nun's valley. Two full days plus a half day. This is recommended if not seen Madeira island before. This cost about 103 Euro's each. Of course, one could probably do it cheaper by taxi if two couples share. However sometimes it gets cloudy inland. Fortunately we had beautiful weather. Lucky maybe. I would definitely reckon on going back to the Santa Maria Hotel when returning to Madeira.

Room Tip: Probably best to ask for a room overlooking the garden. Probably quieter.

Just got back this Hotel is brilliant but its best feature is its location, it is positioned right where it is all happening near the best restaurants and the port and by the cable car, How good is that?
Every thing is at hand you can watch all the cruise ships go by.

Room Tip: Most prefer the sea view of the port but we liked overlooking the square where the locals played car...

We have just returned from a week's stay at this hotel. From the moment we arrived until we left we were given first class service from the friendly staff on all levels. This is truly one of the best hotels we have stayed in, we had a sea view room (a must) it was spacious, tastefully furnished, a spacious bathroom with a good sized balcony. The added bonus was a compact kitchenette with a large fridge, this was ideal for making tea or coffee when we wanted to, this did not detract from the size of the room.

We stayed bed and breakfast but on arrival we were given the option of takin dinner on as many nights as we wanted. We opted for the three night package which included a free lunch on any day we wished. This gave us the freedom to eat out for four nights at the lovely restaurants which are in abundance at the back of the hotel in the old town. We ate very well and the prices in all the restaurants we tried, were very reasonable.

Funchal is a lovely city with lots of atmosphere and great shops and cafes to sit and watch the world go by. The narrow cobbled streets which run into the city centre, are charming with lots of individual shops. Incidentally, high heels are not an option in Funchal as the back streets are cobbled, wear sensible shoes.

We also went on the cable car to Monte, well worth a visit, the views are amazing. Another bonus about this hotel are the great views of the cruise ships coming in each day.

All in all a fantastic holiday and Madeira exceeded our expectations. Congratulations to all the staff at this hotel, we were made to feel very welcome and the Madeiran people in shops and retaurants were also very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: A sea view is a must, ours was overlooking the gardens, no sun in morning but sun all afternoon.
