Situated on the sea front adjacent to the centre of Funchal, this is an excellent base from which to explore both the town and island without the need to hire a car. The hotel is clean and well appointed with friendly helpful staff. In particular the cocktails are an experience not to be missed. Minor criticisms are that BBC news is not available and postcards left with Reception have never arrived at their destinations.

Room Tip: Select a room with a view of the harbour.

Dear Guest,

thank you for sharing your experience with Tripadvisor, We are glad that you enjoyed our barman's cocktails, i will share this with them as they will also be happy to read it. Regarding the postcards we deliver the postcards to CTT (Portuguese mail company) every other day however we have no tracking control after that. We are sorry that have not reached their destination. BBC has stopped their satellite transmission outside the UK which has made it impossible for us to broadcast it in our rooms, we are sorry for the inconvenience. We hope that you visit us again soon.

Best Regards,

André Caldeira

Hotel is in great location at the Old Town end of the Beach promenade. Many restaurants and bars within short walk. Great for going B&B as we did. Spoilt for choice for lunch and dinner venues. The Hotel snack bar is also very good and reasonably priced for lunches, healthier options required though, most dishes are tipical from Madeira

Hotel is in great location at the Old Town end of the Beach promenade. Many restaurants and bars within short walk. Great for going B&B as we did. Spoilt for choice for lunch and dinner venues. The Hotel snack bar is also very good and reasonably priced for lunches, healthier options required though, most dishes are accompanied with potato wedges or fries. Salad is available on the lunch mini-buffet option but is a bit steep at 12.50 Euros each.
The pictures on Hotel website fail to do justice to the room available for sun lounging on the terraces. Plenty of sunbeds and room to place them in. There is also the rooftop terrace option with great views but no parasols for the deluxe sunbeds. This needs sorting as it was far too hot in the middle of the day.
Only issue we had was our room was on 1st floor at the extreme eastern end of the hotel (Room 127). The area of the promenade in front is used by the local teenagers for much of the afternoon and evening for smooching and generally mucking around. They are not badly behaved but are noisy, and it does mean you have no privacy when using the balcony.
Having said that, much of the charm of this hotel is its connection to the old town and it's people. We have been to the Cliff Bay before so we took the Hotel Shuttle Bus up for a look see. The area around where all the new hotels are is now over developed and isolated. Not for us!
We will be back to the Porto Bay Santa Maria but will request a room nearer the middle to give us more quiet and privacy.

Room Tip: Stay away from either end. Middle sea view rooms probably best for privacy and quiet.

Everything about this hotel we found excellent to first class. Perfect spot in the old Funchal restaurant quarter. Rooms cleaned to very high standards, and complimentary toiletries frequently replaced. Receptionists very helpful, breakfasts very good. Would not hesitate to return. Loved the place...

We went last year and enjoyed ourselves so much we returned for a second visit. The staff made us feel like a family member returning. The hotel is very clean and comfortable, well maintained with very efficient staff. Our room overlooked the sea so watching the cruise ships come and go was lovely. The hotel is in the old town so lots of cafes to choose from (we just did B & B) and on the flat. It must be good for so many people to return many times. We had a meal in the hotel and it was first class. Breakfast has everything you need. Looking forward to returning.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.
