“So Good to Return”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

Stayed at the Porto Santa Maria Hotel from 9th - 16th July 2014. Have stayed here many times since the hotel first opened. The Hotel never fails to meet our expectation. We were welcomed back on arrival by the reception staff and allocated a sea view room on the top floor on the West Side of the Hotel. Would recommend a sea view room.

The staff here work so hard to please their guests. Thank you all for your dedication.

The rooms, public areas, pools and gardens are immaculate and are a credit to the Hotel.

The restaurant staff are efficient and aim to please, which they most certainly do. The food on offer at breakfast covers a wide choice to meet all tastes. Good way to start the day. Lots of guests were enjoying their morning glass of sparkling wine.

The lunch time buffet is served on the Terrace until around 3.00 pm at Euros 12.50 per person. Good value after you have been out walking all morning. Soup and or Salad, Meat and or Fish, Rice and or Potatoes, selection of Vegetables, Fruit Tart and or Fruit Salad, plus a selection of fresh Baked Rolls. Very relaxed, sitting there in the shade.

They also serve snack meals throughout the day at the Promenade Bar, had a lovely steak sandwich for lunch on the day we arrived.

The Porto Bay Group employ a falconer who arrives each day with his Hawk, this keeps the pigeons away from the eating area of the hotel.

The work directly outside the Hotel was almost complete when we stayed, they were just putting in the final touches.

More work needs to go on further along the sea front to the west of the Hotel.

The Hotel is a good location for the less mobile visitor - best place to stay if you have any walking difficulties being on the flat. The Hotel also have some adapted rooms for anyone with mobility issues. Lots of eating places just outside the hotel gates. Also cable car, story centre, bus stops and taxi rank.

Beds were extremely comfortable with lovely pillows. The small fully equipped kitchen area is a great bonus.

The hotel is classed as adult only, no bookings accepted for guests under 16 years of age.

In all enjoyed our stay, all being due to the great staff the Hotel employ and their top grade of cleanliness.

Plan to make a return visit.

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms with Sea View have less Air Conditioning Unit noise. Top Floor Rooms on the West...

Our first to the Porto Santa Maria for 18 months, but on arrival we were greeted by the staff as old family friends. OK, we have been back many times and at different times of the year, but it does not matter, the highest standard is always there. The rooms (we have a sea view room on the ground floor) are always cleaned daily to the highest standard. Breakfast is a buffet meal with such a large choice to cater for every taste. The outside area is always cleaned to the same standard as the inside and the service from the bar is excellent. Whilst talking about the bar; Carlos, Victor and the rest of the team in the evening will keep you happy from the Happy hour until the bar closes! Although in most visits we do not use the hotel's own restaurant because of the large number of varied establishments just outside the hotel, in the case we did attend the BBQ on the Saturday evening that was first class, including the entertainment. It is also one of the very few hotels were you can be sure to make friends with people that you have never met, but will be sure to meet up again! The next visit cannot come soon enough.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view room. It is well worth it.

Second day here, very peaceful, first class service, great clean fresh pool, comfy beds, long peaceful sleep, huge breakfast with loads of choice.
Spent fist day by the pool, free wifi in hotel foyer also available full wifi in all rooms and all hotel areas at an extra cost of £5 per week.

Room Tip: Rooms come with fridge sink kettle and hot plate all you need to self cater if that's your thing...

Our second holiday at this hotel. We first stayed here in Feb 2011 and absolutely loved it. Our second stay proved even more enjoyable. The location, on the seafront in the old town area of Funchal, is perfect for us as we like to explore the narrow streets nearby. It's convenient also for the cable car and bus station.
The hotel is comfortable with lovely well tended gardens. The rooms are spacious and clean - you could even cook a simple meal on the stove. Saucepans provided!
The restaurant offers the choice of a la carte or buffet in the evening, with the menu for each evening having a different theme. A bit pricey, but quality is very good.
Staff are really friendly and guests are made to feel very special.
So we'll be returning to the beautiful island of Madeira before too long, and when we do we'll be staying at the Porto Santa ?Maria again.

This is the first time we've been to Madeira but will certainly be returning. From the private transfer from the airport to the brilliant hotel everything was superb. We stayed in a Junior Suite which was a little more expensive but well worth the extra. The Suite was on the third floor with a Kitchenette, Lounge, Bedroom, Large Bathroom and Two Balconies!!. The view out to sea was tremendous and fortunately the building work outside the hotel had finished. Happy hour in the Hotel was 6 - 7 and all drinks were reduced so we took plenty of opportunity to use this facility. The outside area has a pool, sun loungers, umbrellas and a bar area for drinks and snacks. On the roof there is an area for sunbathing but in fact can sometimes be to warm, they were erecting gazebo's over the loungers when we left. the staff are very helpful and all go out of their way to assist, but one in particular stands out - Lena is the Hostess - and she does an exceptional job. As I said this is our first visit but when we return it will certainly be the Porto Santa Maria Hotel

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent but for that little extra choose a Suite

The Hotel was very clean ,staff were great ,We had a bottom floor room at the west end of the hotel, which caught the sun in the morning until mid-day sitting on a smallish but adequate balcony which had a gate you could open and one of you could stroll 30 metres to the pool. the rooms were roomy and comfortable.with a large fridge /freezer and all cooking utensils. One writer said there was no teabags but people took food from the breakfast table so why didnt they take a few teabags? beside there was a Spar right outside the hotel. The breakfasts were really good.
Evening meals and drinks were twice as much as most of the restaurants outside, Especially after going up the hill along side the old castle and then up a further hill to a new restaurant
called O T'asco.
Our one complaint was the amount of noise which still came up from harbour side as they filed and emptied trucks and work on the other side as they worked in the old castle area.
Also for some reason all jobs were being done at the hotel whilst we were there:,the terrace at the bar was being done up and out of use -high power washing jets droned away for days as they cleaned the paths and walkways, tables and chairs, plus normal noise of mowers and gardening equipment. We used the free and very good bus and went to their other hotels which were worth seeing.
The very good terrace area ,on the roof, the heated pool and jacuzzi /saunas fitness centre was very good if hardly used ,and the no under 16yrs policy was excellent.
I'll return to Funchal after all work has been done; either 2015 or 2016, as the Island and locals were so great. With the most beautiful flowers in one place that you will ever see.

Room Tip: Park view looked noisy

Dear Guest,

thank you for sharing your experience at Porto Santa Maria. In order to keep the hotel in good shape we too need to do some constant maintenance. Although being done during the day the bar's terrace was open every evening when the bar opened. Unfortunately we had no control(no information) on the works on the fort's side but I am very happy to inform you that they are done. We hope that you do visit us again as it is always a pleasure to welcome back our Prestige guests.

What can I say fantastic hotel, fantastic location, lovely helpful staff.it has just the right amount of rooms to feel busy but not over crowded. Plenty of sun loungers plus your not crammed to close to each other. Each room has a kitchenette so its great for a light lunch of bread and cheese/meat from the local market. Plus it has a no kid policy! !!!
its the only hotel we have ever returned too. Maderia is a lovely, clean island......going back this August, can't wait:-D
