6 of us stayed celebrating 40th Anniversaries. Although one room was not as booked, it was changed the next day, with a free meal as an apology. All staff were friendly and helpful, especially the lady in charge of the restaurant. Food superb and very reasonably priced. Hotel perfectly placed for all of the Old Town restaurants, cable car 3 minutes walk away, and Funchal less than 10 minutes level walk. Would not consider any other hotel.

We chose this hotel based on two things, firstly that it was one of the Thomson couples hotels and secondly based on the reviews on Tripadvisor. As one of the couple's hotels we expected a variety of ages, however the age range tended to be the upper end, and this was reflected in how quiet the hotel was.
The absolute best thing about this hotel was the location, in the heart of the Old Town with a multitude of truly great restaurants on its doorstep, bear in mind though it is necessary to run the gauntlet of the many people trying to get you into their restaurant every evening. You can have some banter with them but best advice is to decide where you want to eat each evening before you go out. I ate some of the best food I have ever eaten on holiday and it was a shame our holiday was only for a week as the choice was far greater than 7 days.
The hotel itself is well run, always clean and all the staff polite. We found the Captains Bar lacked some atmosphere but happy hour was great value if a little early!
One thing we felt did spoil the week was the amount of building going on in Funchal, not only along the seafront. We did find that there was still quite a lot of noise which was disruptive and the credit to the rooms in lieu of this finished in April which we felt was disappointing.
All in all a great hotel but I think it will be a couple of years before we go back due to the building work, however Madeira is beautiful and the Cable Car is a must.

Dear Guest,

thank you for your review at Tripadvisor, we are glad that you enjoyed our Hotel. The works in front of the hotel stopped in February and we have stopped the credit in April as although there are still works in the town there are not really a intrusive when one is at the hotel. We hope that your visit will be sooner than your predict.

just returned from porto santa maria what a great hotel .the food was excelent with its themed evenings We booked just 3 dinners in the hotel so we could sample other resturants in the town all of which were equaly good

the staff here were all very good and helpful the rooms bright and comfortable we had a junior suite room 305 it had really good views over the sea and the garden
we was there for one of the firework displays over the harbour this was good as we had a perfect view from the roof terrace which was wonderful for views all around and for relaxing and sun bathing

the hotel is very close to town and some touris attractions all within easy walking distance We have been to Madeira 5 times and this is the best hotel and best location we have ever had

the swiming pool indoor is great even though it is a little shallow

This is the best hotel for our age as it is adults only and showed in every area ( ie)

the dining room the bar the lounge and the garden

I could go on and on about this hotel but I will just say it was fantastic

Room Tip: All room are great

Dear Guest,

It is always nice to read nice reviews like yours, makes us happy that you enjoyed your stay to Madeira (specially being it the fifth time). Now that you have seen the Atlantic Festival fire work display I must recommend the New Year's.

Dear Guest,

Although I am sure that you are very well taken care at The Cliff Bay I would suggest to add some extra days downtown at the Porto Santa Maria as a complement to your Madeira holidays! Even if not it is still a pleasure to have you over for a meal.

Dear Guest,

thank your for your review on our hotel. We do offer free internet to all our guests in the public areas such as the Lobby, restaurant and bar. The internet that we offer in the rooms has a higher speed and therefore is at this moment a paid service. We hope to have you again as our guest.

Our 1st visit to Madeira and booked this hotel primarily because of location and no children policy. Booked Standard Room via Thomsons. Allocated Room 254 which is on 2nd floor and overlooks park which is mentioned in a few of the other reviews. The room was clean, comfortable and just what we had expected. We were a bit dubious of position of room having read less favourable reports on this forum regarding rooms that overlooked the park. Personally we had no problem with this, yes the locals and Taxi Drivers did used to sit on the seats and play/dominoes and cards but from the position of this room we heard no noise and their presence did not disturb us. Our sleep during the 7 days holiday was not disturbed by any noise whatsoever. If you spend a lot of your time on the balcony I expect it maybe worth paying the extra money for the sea view. Everyones preference are different!

The Breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice, fresh, and al fresco if you so wished. Also available between 07:00 - 10:30 if you enjoy a lie in.

The Pool and surroundings are well kept and there are plenty of sun loungers etc available. Also very peaceful if you enjoy a read or sleep.

Without exception we found all staff very pleasant and helpful. My wife had a couple of mishaps which were addressed sympathetically and quickly. The staff at the Captains Table Bar were friendly and efficient, likewse the girls that manned the 'pool bar' outside who kept me in drink!

Yes, 4.50 Euros is probably a bit expensive for a pint of Coral. There are numerous outlets in location of hotel where you can get cheaper. But I enjoyed ambience provided by hotel so it did not bother me paying these higher prices. There is a small supermarket nearly opposite the hotel whereby you can purchase drink vastly cheaper, store in Fridge in your room if you so wish.

Lina, has been previously mentioned in other reviews and I endorse all the favourable comments that have previously been made about her.

We'll be returning for next year but this time for 14 days!

Positives:

- great location in the heart of the old town, v close to cable car
- tasty breakfast
- nice bar with reasonable entertainment
- beautiful pool area without people reserving sunbeds with towels
- our junior suite was spacious and well equipped with very comfy beds
- nice staff except lady on desk, see below

Negatives

- you have to pay for the safe in your room should you wish to use it. Pretty appalling for a 4 star hotel. They must address this as it's simply embarrassing for them.
- the lady on check in was so joyless. Would it hurt her to smile?!! We are on holiday and don't appreciate such sour service. She didn't even enquire if we had enjoyed our stay when we paid our bill
- the bathroom could do with a bit of a make over

Overall I definitely recommend the hotel. It would be fabulous if those few negative aspects were addressed.
