I know this hotel doesn't come as high as others in Funchal but we couldn't fault it for anything and it's got to be the ideal location for sightseeing and eating out. It is situated right next to the sea with just a walkway in front and on the other side is the old town. The old town is by far the best place in eat in Funchal as well as being a great place to wonder and soak up the atmosphere. The hotel is very close to the market, just stroll through the old town and you are there, as well as being easy walking distance to Funchal town. The cable car is even closer!
The hotel rooms are perfect with good sized balconies and even a well equipped kitchenette area. We paid for a sea view and were a little disappointed to get a side sea view over the garden and pool however the did say we could possibly move the next day but by then we were settled.
We were staying B&B and the breakfasts were excellent with the added bonus of a Harris hawk 'display'! Apparently employed to keep the pigeons away from the outside breakfast area but also very entertaining.
Our only other meal at the hotel was lunch one day at the snack bar and again this was excellent.
The pool area was kept very clean and tidy as was the hotel everywhere. Staff were helpful and friendly.
I highly recommend this hotel if we return to Madeira.

Room Tip: Be careful of travel companies charging for sea view as almost all the rooms had sea view or side sea view.

Faultless. Firstly, I love the boutique style & friendly, attentive staff who make you feel part of a family. Secondly, the location is perfect - tranquil although immediately adjacent to the 'old town' where all the finest restaurants, bars & amenities are. It is an ideal base for all sight seeing. My studio bedroom has a lovely sea view & the benefit of a kitchenette. The room is spotless (as is the whole hotel) & extremely comfortable. Breakfast great on the terrace, but haven't tried an evening meal as I generally eat out. The clientele is certainly mature & predominantly English. I'm on my fourth day here & love it. I am so glad that I was advised to stay here by my travel agent rather than in the perceived higher end up on the cliff (forgive the pun). That end of town appears to have classy hotels set in in a very tourist area that could be anywhere.

This is a great hotel stayed for one week with my husband. On arrival the luggage arrived in the room before us. We had a side sea view looking on to the park. No noise at night. The hotel was clean, beds were comfy, staff were polite and helpful. Rooms were cleaned every day and you could change the towels as often as you wished sweets left on the pillow daily was a nice touch. Pool towels were provided. We opted for bed and breakfast and ate in the many restaurants. We had one meal in the hotel which was very good, breakfast had all the usual choices and was high quality. We ate out side most mornings. The best part was the hotel location a few minutes from the cable car and just a bit further to the centre of Funchal. The pool areas was well kept, no shortage of sun beds and no children, another bonus. The heated indoor pool and spa was a bonus. There is a roof terrace as an alternative to the pool. We were lucky enough to see the festival fire works from here with a complimentary glass of bubbly. Musicians in the bar each evening. Lots of building work going on following the 2010 floods but it has moved along from the hotel and daytime noise was minimal. We would definitely return and to this hotel. Very well run, delightful staff, great facilities and good food.

Room Tip: Sea view is best and perhaps a higher floor.

6 of us stayed celebrating 40th Anniversaries. Although one room was not as booked, it was changed the next day, with a free meal as an apology. All staff were friendly and helpful, especially the lady in charge of the restaurant. Food superb and very reasonably priced. Hotel perfectly placed for all of the Old Town restaurants, cable car 3 minutes walk away, and Funchal less than 10 minutes level walk. Would not consider any other hotel.

We chose this hotel based on two things, firstly that it was one of the Thomson couples hotels and secondly based on the reviews on Tripadvisor. As one of the couple's hotels we expected a variety of ages, however the age range tended to be the upper end, and this was reflected in how quiet the hotel was.
The absolute best thing about this hotel was the location, in the heart of the Old Town with a multitude of truly great restaurants on its doorstep, bear in mind though it is necessary to run the gauntlet of the many people trying to get you into their restaurant every evening. You can have some banter with them but best advice is to decide where you want to eat each evening before you go out. I ate some of the best food I have ever eaten on holiday and it was a shame our holiday was only for a week as the choice was far greater than 7 days.
The hotel itself is well run, always clean and all the staff polite. We found the Captains Bar lacked some atmosphere but happy hour was great value if a little early!
One thing we felt did spoil the week was the amount of building going on in Funchal, not only along the seafront. We did find that there was still quite a lot of noise which was disruptive and the credit to the rooms in lieu of this finished in April which we felt was disappointing.
All in all a great hotel but I think it will be a couple of years before we go back due to the building work, however Madeira is beautiful and the Cable Car is a must.

Dear Guest,

thank you for your review at Tripadvisor, we are glad that you enjoyed our Hotel. The works in front of the hotel stopped in February and we have stopped the credit in April as although there are still works in the town there are not really a intrusive when one is at the hotel. We hope that your visit will be sooner than your predict.

Best Regards,

André Caldeira
