Pleasant Hotel , with all resources that we need.
Nice Pool, gim, Spa,and good location to the city center.
Very quiet,
Little old fashion in certain public areas, but that's ok!!

Although business costumers are not unusual at Porto Santa Maria, most of its guests visit the island for their holidays, as one can see from a sample of the TripAdvisor reviews.
Therefore it is great to get some feedback from a guest with a different travel purpose and find that Porto Santa Maria also caters for your tastes and needs.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share these insights about your stay.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

having done a great deal of research on this hotel for our golden wedding we decided to book after the hotel told us the full sea view, 3rd floor room we wanted was available, on arrival this was not the case, only part view of sea and overlooking other rooms but on complaining the desk manager still said it was a sea view , but i stuck to my guns and within 5mins we were allocated room 227 PERFECT !!!, we found everything about the hotel again PERFECT, the food, cleanness, staff, pool , this has to be one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in, Funchal itself was great , the old town ,shops, restaurants, the people, everything again was perfect. we hope to return again and it will be this hotel without question.

We spent 11 nights at this truly wonderful hotel. Its location is perfect, grounds fantastic, the staff are beyond belief, nothing is too much trouble, they smile constantly and ensure that you feel like you are their most important guest. The hotel is spotless, the reception outstanding, the grounds kept immaculate and tended with love by a lone gardener, the restaurant is very good and the breakfast is fantastic, the bar staff are so efficient and friendly. If you need a perfect, relaxing holiday to re charge your batteries before returning to the every day grind of life - this has to be high on your list of places to stay

This review is somewhat overwhelming and somehow I feel that there is not much more I can say than a most sincere "Thank you!" on behalf of the team that I feel privileged to lead.
I will share it with them and I am sure that none more than our lone gardener will be encouraged by your words, since the winter season always lets some sea waves into the garden, soaking the roots of the plants with salt water, which require extra care from him and our gardener colleagues from Vila Porto Mare, who always give a helping hand throughout the year.
We look forward to welcome you back to Madeira Island and will keep working to keep the standards that you acknowledge with such enthusiastic words.
Yours sincerely,
Virgilio Silva (General Manager - Hotel Porto Santa Maria)

Every aspect of our stay at this hotel was excellent. Whilst we didn't use all of the facilities on offer we were very impressed by the quality, comfort and cleanliness all round. All of the staff were friendly and efficient. The in-house restaurant was excellent, offering a huge choice for breakfast, a very nice mini-buffet at lunch time and we enjoyed several dinners from the excellent table d'hote menu in the evening. The place is immaculately kept and is superbly located. Highly recommendable.

Thank you very much for sharing with us such positive remarks about your recent holidays on Madeira Island.
This time we succeeded at surpassing your expectations, therefore we know that if you return, as we hope you will, we will have to improve ourselves and Porto Santa Maria in order to keep up with them. Which is welcome and we call positive stress.
We look forward to your next visit and hopefully to still deserve such rewarding comments.

My mum and dad came here for the first time in 2006 and fell in love with the place as soon as they stepped off the plane. Funchal is outstanding as is the hotel. My dad passed away last year and my mum asked me would I like to accompany her on a holiday so she could show me the hotel and the Island where her and dad stayed.

Well all I can say is wow!!! We had a really nice stay and all the staff were so friendly and nothing was a trouble. Carlos and Victor remembered mum and dad and were awfully upset when we told them about dad. Maria on the reception desk was really nice she even let us have a look at one of the Junior Suites as we are planning on booking one for next year. So on behalf of myself and my mum, we would just like to take this opportunity to thank you all so very much for a wonderful holiday it was just what we needed.

I am delighted to receive and share with my team such a good review from you.
Considering that Porto Santa Maria welcomes about 15,000 different people every year, and of those about one third are return guests, my staff surprises both me and these guests by remembering them year after year. Stability in the team helps and very good memory, of course.
But mostly I believe it is because they enjoy their work and care about the people that choose our hotel for their holidays, therefore the collection of small stories and familiar faces happens naturally.
I regret that the loss of your father somehow was the cause of your first stay with us but also hope that this time you had a chance to enjoy some the good experiences he surely had upon his visits to Madeira Island.
On behalf of my team I thank you very much for these words and look forward to welcome you back here.
Kind regards,
Virgilio Silva (General Manager - Hotel Porto Santa Maria)

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The staff were very friendly and it has a high level of cleanliness. The food was good with a good selection. The only downside to this hotel is the Captains Bar which we found really unwelcoming. It's far too small and if you happened to be seated with your back against the interior walls you couldn't see or even enjoy the entertainment. We felt that we were forced out into the town to enjoy a drink and entertainment. The bar area really does need to be reviewed. The lounge area was quite large and underutilised so the entertainment could easily have been in this area. The indoor pool was lovely and so much bigger than the tiny outdoor pool which only seemed to be 3ft. deep in all areas. The town of Funchal is really lovely and we enjoyed the local hospitality. We also enjoyed watching the cruise liners coming and going and it was lovely having lunch on the Vagrant which is the Beatles ex-yaght (great atmosphere). All in all a really relaxing stay at the Santa Maria and it was handy for all the local town amenities. Don't request a garden view room as these look out over the public area which is very noisy and seems to attract rough sleepers living in close proximity. We wouldn't return again, but thanks for a nice stay.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post here your review of your recent stay at Porto Santa Maria and Madeira Island.
It was good to know that you enjoyed your stay with us and I only regret that our Captain's Bar didn't live up to your expectations, due to its layout. And you applied the same reasoning to the differences between indoor and outdoor pool.
Porto Santa Maria gets great remarks for its location, as good as it gets in Funchal, most say. But the limitations that this same location placed on the designing team meant that they had to make some options in order to make the most of the building area and still stay within the constraints posed both by regulations and nature itself. Obviously, an hotel can evolve and adjust things that were not perfect at the time of opening. But due to Porto Santa Maria' success story some of these changes are almost impossible to make without causing major disturbance to guests, therefore they require careful evaluation and planning.
Your remarks and suggestions are duly appreciated and recorded and maybe sooner or later we will have a chance to apply them.
Although you say you don't plan to come back, the World is becoming such a small place that at Porto Santa Maria we still hope to one day welcome you back on this beautiful island.
Yours sincerely,
Virgilio Silva (General Manager - Hotel Porto Santa Maria)
