“The perfect restaurant in the perfect hotel in Funchal !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2011

After visiting the west and center of the beautiful island of Madeira, we came for our last 5 days to the city of Funchal. We made the best choice that we could make to stay in Quintinha de Sao Joao... Situated not to deep into the crowdy city, with a parking lot inside, a beautifully decorated environment and a marvellous restaurant: Super! And most of all a friendly and personally interested crew in the restaurant, to serve a luxurious breakfast and an excellent dinner, every day... A friendly smile, lovely greetings, truly a warm welcome!!!
Lots of thanks for the perfect stay in Funchal!

For our visit to Madeira we couldn’t have chosen a better hotel. We did research hotels before we booked Quintinha de Sao Joao, the reviews were the reason we booked. We booked a private transfer from the hotel as soon as we met Steve the driver we knew we had made the right decision, he was very friendly, professional and the Hotels minibus was spotless. On arrival we were met by very friendly and attentive staff we were shown key points round the hotel and taken to our room which was very large light, airy with views overlooking the gardens.
The hotel was also spacious light and airy with gardens, terraces, 2 pools, spa and gym. The cleanliness of the hotel was of a very high standard; staff in the hotel across all areas was very friendly and they always remained professional. We were located on the second floor as is the indoor pool on 4 afternoons we had the pool to ourselves bliss ...it was like staying in a private house.
We have no hesitation in recommending the Quintinha de Sao Joao Hotel to family and friends, in fact 2 very close friends have already booked and will be visiting in October.

We booked this hotel a week before arrival, due to the reviews on trip advisor and we were not disappointed!

Food - What can I say except the food is fabulous! Breakfast is not to be missed and consists of anything and everything from eggs and bacon to waffles, breads, cereals, fruit, cheese, meats, juice and much more besides. Breakfast is served from 7.30 to 10.00 so you can still have a lie in and enjoy a breakfast feast.

We booked half board and despite some of the comments by previous reviewers, we were not disappointed. The menu consists of four courses which changed each evening, cooked to perfection and with great flare and imagination. There is also an a la carte menu which offers a wider selection of food. The hotel offers a flexible meal arrangement which would give the opportunity to eat out on a couple of occasions and if we return we would probably take up that option.

Location: The hotel is in a residential area, about a ten minute down hill walk from the centre of Funchal and a thirty minute up hill walk back! The hotel offers a courtesy bus into Funchal twice a day and taxis are readily available. We were glad that the hotel was not in the centre of Funchal or part of the hotel concrete jungle that has emerged in Funchal.

Staff: The staff at the hotel are on the whole impressive and we must give a special mention to the restaurant and bar staff who provided some of the best service we have ever experienced, in particular the two waitresses and the restaurant manager who are role models of how to provide excellent customer service. With the exception of one or two of the reception staff everyone else was friendly and helpful.

We booked the hotel via a tour operator but I think it would have been cheaper either direct with the hotel or via trip advisor.

The harbour at Funchal is worth a visit and my husband did a days big game fishing (boat "CABO SJOAO") which he would recommend even though he did not catch anything, he did see a whale, dolphins and turtles. During our stay we visited the Botanical Gardens via the cable car which we enjoyed, a half day trip to Nunn’s Valley (beautiful) and a full day tour of the West of the Island which was lovely but a little long. The rest of the time was spent walking and relaxing by the pool. Madeira is a beautiful island and has a lot to offer, it was helped by the fact that the weather was perfect!

Room Tip: e-mail the hotel prior to arrival with any special requests. I e-mailed the hotel and asked for a ro...

From the moment we entered the hotel we were given such a friendly greeting entwined wth true professionalism....and taken personally to our room....what a size ! with the balcony overlooking the delightful garden.
The family greeting extended everywhere we went...how pleasant to walk into the restaurant / dining room, and to be greeted by practically every one as we passed each table.
The tranquilty was exceptional..every where we went..so peacefull and relaxing, especially around the pool.
It must be one of the most relaxing holidays we have had, and at the sametime knowing that we never be concerned as there was always someone to help.
Thank you all at Quintinha Sao Joao !
We will be back !

We booked a week at the Quintinha Sao Joao at the end of August through Thomson Holidays. Following a six hour flight delay we arrived at the hotel around 17:00. Arriving by hire car, we found that there was ample parking in the underground garage for guests. The check in was quick and efficient and we were shown to our room by the receptionist who gave us details of the services provided by the hotel. A porter service and lift to all floors was available if required. In the room a folder in Portuguese, English, French and German was provided listing the services offered by the hotel. Other information found in the room included minibar price list and room service menu.

This is a small(ish) hotel located about 1.5Km from Funchal town Centre. It has about 50 rooms including suites and junior suites. Guest rooms are situated on the ground, 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. All rooms have a view of the gardens and dependant on floor views over Funchal or the mountains behind Funchal.

The common hotel areas are exceedingly well maintained. While we were there some repainting work in the corridors was being done but this was done while the majority of guests were out for the day and had no detrimental effect to our stay.

There are two swimming pools, both well kept, with towels provided. There is no shortage of sunbeds and chairs. The outdoor pool is in a secluded walled part of the garden adjacent to the Spa. The indoor pool is located on the roof of the hotel covered by a transparent conservatory making it a veritable sun trap. The spa offers various ‘treatments’ at reasonable prices, we are unable to comment further as we did not use them.

The gardens while not huge are well maintained and secluded with numerous tropical plants and blooms. There are plenty of secluded areas where you can read or have a quiet drink.

It is hard to determine the occupancy rate during our stay but at full capacity there would be no overcrowding in any of the public areas.

We had booked a junior suite that gave a larger seating and sleeping area along with a dressing area and large bathroom. The bathroom comprised shower compartment, bath and sink. The WC and Bidet was in a separate room. The seating area had a sofa, coffee table, desk, chair, flat screen TV and DVD player. DVD’s could be hired from reception. There was air conditioning and towels could be changed daily if required. We managed a peek into one of the normal rooms and could see that they were of a similar standard with smaller dressing area and bathroom.

The restaurant was of a high standard. A buffet continental breakfast with a good selection of fruit, cereals, cheeses, meats, rolls and cakes was provided each day. In addition, you could order a cooked breakfast if desired. Unfortunately the only negative point of our stay was the coffee (This seems to be a recurring point in all reviews) it’s similarity to used engine oil was uncanny. However this was redeemed at the evening meals which were of a very high standard. There were table d’hote or a la carte options. Both reasonably priced and providing excellent food. An extensive wine list was also available. If you have special dietary requirements or other requests these are catered for with the minimum of fuss. Special mention must be given to Rosy and Inệs the waitresses and Carlo the manager who made us feel so welcome.

If you are looking for loud music and all night drinking sessions this is not the hotel for you. If you are looking for a comfortable base, outstanding service, great food and a friendly atmosphere book now!

I would advise that you check out the hotel website www.quintinhasaojoao.com before booking. The information is accurate and gives you a good idea what services are on offer.

On a final note, this is a five star hotel and you would expect the majority of the above facilities to be five star – It’s what you pay for. However, this hotel exceeds in many areas not least the staff who are warm, welcoming and highly proficient in their duties. Nothing is too much trouble. We will be returning.

We had never been to Madeira before and booked the hotel on line which despite good reviews is always a bit of a gamble. However this hotel is an absolute gem.
Where to start ............... well firstly the welcome is warm and personal. Our room was spotless, in fact the whole place looked recently decorated, and for the price we thought the room was very large. The hotel itself if a calm oasis, a very relaxing place.
We were booked as bed & breakfast and the breakfast buffet was spectacular with a huge choice including a cooked breakfast. We ate our evening meal once at the hotel which was very tasty but twice the price of some of the smaller places in town. The lunchtime food at the pool bar was lovely with excellent service. I also have to point out the wonderful cocktail of the day which for 4 euros was great value and very moreish!
Both pools are very beautiful and clean with very comfortable loungers and the two hammocks in the lush gardens were a favourite place for us to while away an afternoon.
The walk into town took about 10-15 minutes but be warned it's a steep walk back. This didn't bother us as is absolved some of the guilt of the lovely puddings we had.
The staff at the hotel are very friendly and go about their work with a quiet efficiency so nothing seems to be any trouble.
All in all this is the best hotel we've ever stayed in and should be number one in Funchal. We're not the type of people who return to the same place every year but we've definitely found somewhere we'll go back to.

This is a charming hotel with a lovely quiet atmosphere. It lies about 1km from central Funchal. (Readers who are familiar with Madeira will know that there is very little flat land, and therefore it should be no surprise that the walk into town is a lot easier than the walk back to the hotel!). The hotel is in first class decorative order with nice furniture (many reproduction antiques) and very well maintained gardens. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, and give a first class service. Food too is excellent. We particularly enjoyed light lunches at the poolside bar! (Free Wi-fi is available in the reception area - you have to pay extra to get it in your room.)

Thank you for having chosen the Quintinha de São João for your recent stay in Madeira, and for taking the time and trouble to post your kind (and constructive) comments on TripAdvisor.

We are very happy to read that you have thoroughly enjoyed our hotel, its surroundings and location – not forgetting the service and food.

Yes, the Quintinha de São João is ideally positioned for those eager to sample the “real” Madeira. The Old Town, the Market, the Cable Car, the Museums are, in fact, all just a short distance away. Walk down and take a taxi ride back!

We are pleased that you enjoyed our special poolside menu – it has been designed so that your sunbathing and swimming may proceed with as little interruption as possible!

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Quintinha de São João in the near future.

Yours sincerely
