We visited this hotel for two days in the beginning of April. The facilities and staff are up to a previously rated 5 star standard. Though the hotel could need som general refurbishment (wall to wall carpet etc). We where met with smiling staff with great sense of service. Lunch at the patio was cosy and though the dishes where petite, it kind of reflected the fair price.

We booked this hotel through a "secret hotel agency" and therefor payed a bit less than what is announces through booking.com and hotels.com. This might be the reason why we where given room number 101 (which is rarely a good sign). Though our terrace was overlooking the hotel restaurant and also was the only one not on the sea side, the room was spacious and clean. The maid even offered to cleen our room the same day of arrival at 10 pm (when we where going out to dinner). Only negative happened at night while going to the bathroom for a drink of water. I managed to trip over the luggage table which was placed in front of the bathroom and got really bruised up. This might as well be my fault for not turning the light on ;) Over all though a nice experience.

Room Tip: Though the room is nice, it would be even nicer if it had a sea view and the balcony was not overloo...

Thank you for writing a review for the Quintinha de São João on TripAdvisor.

In the title, you state that our breakfasts are “poor”. Even though this has not been not elaborated upon in your review, in all fairness I feel rather baffled at this comment as this is one of the aspects that receive the most praise. Included in our buffet we have a large variety of fresh fruit (tropical and otherwise), cereals, various types of breads and croissants, dried fruit and nuts, cold meats and cheeses, smoked salmon, fresh fruit juices, teas, coffee to name but some of the items on display. Our cooked selection is made fresh to order and guests are presented with a menu specifying all available items such as bacon, eggs (poached, fried, scrambled, omelets etc), sausages, baked beans, mushrooms, cooked tomatoes etc. This may be ordered completely at the clients’ discretion.

As far as requiring a general refurbishment is concerned, I would like to state that last year we completely painted the outside of the hotel, substituted carpets, wooden flooring where necessary and built an extension to our restaurant. We are in the process of refurbishing our bedrooms and have used top quality material in which to do this.

All rooms are allocated by us and we do not discriminate between companies. Our hotel has enjoyed a full occupancy and on your booking, you requested a double bed. This was the only room available that met with your requirements.

We thank you for your kind comments about our staff and are delighted that you enjoyed our service.

We hope to welcome you again on your next trip to Madeira.
Yours sincerely

We stayed for two weeks bed and breakfast in March and enjoyed a very comfortable and relaxing time. We received very helpfull advise about the island from Rosie (Guest Relations) and from the reception staff who were brilliant always with a smile and always willing to help.

Unlike large hotels ther is a relaxed atmosphere where the staff make an effort to know the guests and help as much as they can.
Breakfast buffet was excellent with wonderfull fresh fruit and homemade preserves. Unfortunately the tea was not very good but that was not a big problem.
We enjoyed the out door pool which has a small area for sunbathing & reading and the roof top indoor pool is also very good and we took an early morning swim every day.

We only tried the restaurant on one evening as we prefer to sample the atmosphere and excellent selection in Funchal but it was very good.
It is a bit of a walk in to the town but if you are reasonably fit it can be an interesting walk as there are various routes we found. The taxis are always there to take you home if the walk is daunting after a few glasses of wine. Get to know the town of Funchal, it is full of surprises.

Our room which we believe was one of the standard rooms was exceptionally well furnished, large comfortable with a seating area, desk and TV with DVD. We would have liked to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room but that is uncommon out side the UK.
The only grumble we have is that smoking is allowed on the balconies and cigar smoke from another room would waft in to our room which we found unpleasant.

They also have a Spa which we used once a Gym which we used a number of times and a games room which is equipped with pool, table tennis and chess/draughts etc.

Overall an excellent stay in a hotel which we could recommend.

We had a very pleasant stay here. As others have said, the rooms were clean and spacious. We had a nice little balcony where we enjoyed our own wine with bread and cheese that we had bought at the supermarket. Our only suggestion might be that a little more light in the room would help when we wanted to read. The staff was helpful, especially Rosie, who provided us with a map and book of hikes when we couldn't find ours and gave wonderful suggestions for restaurants. After reading other reviews, we requested a quiet room, and it was provided. The parking was free but quite a small space. Breakfast had lots of choices -- good fresh fruit, breads, cheese, smoked salmon, eggs cooked to order, bacon, etc.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room.

Well placed for a 15 minute walk into the centre....but a steep climb back! Given the rating we had high expectations which, for the mostpart, were met .The fabric of the hotel was very good, the staff (with the exception of an unsmiling restaurant waiter) were wonderful. The Reception girls were especially helpful . Breakfasts were superb both in terms of quality and choice.A few relatively minor points are as follows:
1 Access to the hotel for visitors with hire cars is not easy.Make sure you receive good instructions from the hotel.
2 Car parking is tight and restricted.The underground facility has space for about 10-12 cars..
3 The photograph of the hotel we saw before booking gave the impression of openess and spaciousness. This is somewhat misleading. Although the gardens are pleasant and well tended this is not a country house set in expansive grounds.
4 Although this is generally a quiet and restful hotel, you may wish to avoid rooms along the corridor between Reception and the restaurant. We were wakened by drunken revellers after midnight on one occasion...but this can happen anywhere.
5 We had one evening meal at the hotel. This was OK but nothing special given the prices involved.
6 The baize on the Pool table is worn out! Snooker would be a more attractive option!
7 This and many other continental hotels would be more attractive if coffee making facilities were available in every room.
Notwithstanding these relatively minor criticisms we enjoyed our stay and would recommend others to use the hotel.

Room Tip: A balcony room on the first floor away from the ground floor bar

Thank you for placing your review for the Quintinha de São João on TripAdvisor. We are pleased to learn that you enjoyed your holiday and that you would recommend our hotel to others.

We are pleased to answer your comments as follows:

1. We would like to draw attention to the fact that there is a detailed description on our website regarding how to reach the Quintinha from the airport and the route into the centre of Funchal from the hotel;
2. Our underground car park caters for more than the number of cars quoted; seventeen, to be more precise. There are times when we have very few guests with cars but others when it seems that everybody has the same idea. For a hotel with 42 bedrooms, we feel that our parking is adequate and has not proved a problem in the past. We apologize, however, if this was found inconvenient;
3. The gardens of our hotel constitute 1 hectare of land. We are ultimately a sub-tropical garden with over 300 species of plants and trees with ample space to relax in a hammock, recline on a sun bed, or just sit on one of the many benches;
4. We are very sorry you were disturbed;
5. On a positive note, we are pleased to say that we are in the process of submitting a whole new and inventive menu – keeping, of course, our signature Goan dishes;
6. We are looking into the condition of the baize on the Pool table;
7. We have taken this comment onboard. We already have coffee machines in our suites and are considering extending this, in time, to our standard rooms.

We thank you again for your time and trouble and are pleased that we met with your expectations.

We hope to welcome you back.

Yours sincerely

Have just enjoyed a lovely week here. The hotel has about 40 rooms and is built in the gardens of an old house (where the family still live). We went to the "strip" once and thank heavens we avoided this, even though most of the hotels are here.

The hotel is very friendly and has large rooms. There is a small outside pool and an enclosed roof pool. The communal areas are wide and light and have good antique furniture and wonderful flower arrangements (done by the matriach of the family). The advice on restaurants from Rosie (the customer services person) were spot on and the ones we went to on our own initiative were rubbish in comparison.

On arrival we thought our room was noisy with the sound of machinery (possibly from the swimming pool). We were transfered to a suite which was quiet but actually having two rooms in a suite was less good than the normal rooms which had a bigger bed and a TV to watch in bed. The hotel is in town so we walked into town every day which was a gentle 30 minute walk. It is not in the countryside so has some traffic noise but it is a lovely and good hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. We will go again.

Room Tip: 208 etc were nosiy, there are three wings, lower numbers hava sea view but some traffic noise. Highe...

We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your recent holiday at the Quintinha de São João and even happier that you write that you will be back! Many thanks for taking the time to write a review on TripAdvisor – we are sure that prospective guests will find it very useful.

I am glad that you found the location of the hotel to your liking – it is true, we are away from the big hotels on the “strip” and want to give our guests a truly Madeiran experience. This involves displaying our amazing selection of flowers to the best advantage and yes, my Mother, together with our housekeeper makes sure this is the case. Dining is a very important part of a holiday and we are pleased that Rosie’s suggestions met with your approval.

We are investigating the noise experienced in your first room. We are fully booked at the moment and wanted to make sure you were comfortable as quickly as possible and the suite was all we had at the time.

We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

I am slightly bemused by the number of outstanding reviews for this hotel. In our experience, my wife and I thought it good, but not great.
It is located in a residential area about a 20 minute walk into central Funchal, where you would need to go to find alternative restaurants or activities,
Our bedroom was light, airy, spacious and clean - as were most areas of the hotel.
The breakfast included a good selection on the buffet table, with hot food freshly cooked to order. Other than breakfast, we did not eat in the restaurant (the menu did not appeal) but we did eat in the bar and room service - the watercress soup and salads were particularly good. However, we don't understand why they refused to serve food in the bar after 6pm - but insisted on guests using room service instead (off the same bar menu). We heard this lead to several disgruntled customers and it really makes no sense.
The free, underground car park was a real bonus as parking can be a bit of a challenge.
Overall, the staff were polite and helpful - in particular Rosie, who deals with guest relations and gave us plenty of good advice as it was our first visit to Madeira.
Ultimately we were glad that we stayed here and would be happy to recommend the hotel but would suggest that other potential guests do their research thoroughly (don't just rely on Trip Advisor) before making their decision.

Thank you for submitting your review on Tripadvisor.

We are sorry that you did not find the Quintinha de São João as “outstanding” as other guests but are delighted that your ultimate experience was enjoyable and that you would be happy to recommend our hotel. We are aware of the fact that not everybody can always be of the same opinion but feel that prospective guests do use Tripadvisor as a guideline rather than “law”.

We do not serve food in the bar after 6pm because our main restaurant is open from 7pm. Should you have only required a snack or light meal, our restaurant would have been more than able to cater for this and we would have been happy to serve just a soup or omelet if that was what you wished for. Our Vasco da Gama Bar is a bar that serves snacks during the day and not a snack-bar serving drinks at night – this is the philosophy behind our decision not to serve food here after 6pm. We do, however, offer room service as an alternative for those not wishing to use our restaurant.

We are glad that you found our staff polite and helpful and that the information and advice you received was advantageous. I shall pass on your comments.

We hope that we will be able to have the pleasure of welcoming you back should you visit Madeira on a future occasion.

Yours sincerely
