Not bad for the price I think. The views are good and the botanical gardens at the top is an absolute must. It's just a means of transport with better views really.

“Must do”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

The varied scenery between base station and summit was breathtaking. Gives you quite a perspective on Funchal lifestyles and there was quite an enjoyable temperature difference between base and summit. 15 Euros return trip or 10 Euros one way. Madeira Taboggans are a short walk from summit if you prefer an alternative downward journey but be aware they don't bring you all the way back in to Funchal.

“An elegant glide with great views”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

Glide from sea level to Monte at 550m in a 12 -man gondola. The base station is by the old town, next to the bus station. It feels strange to be getting into a gondola and not going skiing! The other strange thing is that there is virtually no queue, and if there was it could be eliminated in one minute by not allowing couples a gondola to themselves...

But hey, this is Madeira, not Austria. Stretch out in your own personal bubble, and watch the ships in the harbour and the roofs of the houses of Funchal. It isn't a fast gondola - it doesn't of course need to be. But it's a very elegant way to get up the mountain.

For an alternative route, take the 48 bus, which barrels round the back roads of Funchal in an exhilarating roller-coaster ride.

“A MUST FOR VISITORS TO FUNCHAL!”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

This was recommended by our son & d-i-l, and proved the highlight of our week's stay in Madeira. It cost E 15 each for return tickets, and well worth the cost. The weather had been a little overcast in the mornings during our stay but brightened-up by the afternoons, so go when there is a clear sky.

We chose my wife's 60th birthday for this trip, because it was clear that morning, and bought the photo they took when you first get into the cable car - a good memento for just E 10 which included a DVD of the cable car plus Madeira.

While at the top, we walked around to the little church which is well worth a visit. However the steps up to the viewing galleries near the top of the church, are very steep and only for those who are fit.

For those who like gardens, pay the extra when buying your cable car tickets, and enjoy the scenery with all the pretty flowers. The tickets at the entrance are not good value, but if bought with the cable car ticket, are discounted and worth the extra cost.

The views on the way up are great and equally good on the way down, so make sure you have your cameras with you. At quiet times, you may be fortunate to get a car to yourselves, as we did on the way back down. It is a very smooth ride, but I gather that it can be 'exciting' on windy days, although they close it when the winds are too high!
