“A peaceful, beautiful and well run hotel in lovely gardens”
Reviewed 20 August 2012

This hotel is set high above Funchal with a great view of the ocean. The gardens are full of the most beautiful sub tropical plants and flowers - from our room there was a huge banana tree with bunches of fruit hanging from it. The hotel is packed full of antiques and is very peaceful. Lovely pool with a snack bar which served sandwiches, salads, drinks although it was quite expensive. There were all age groups staying - from families with young children, to teenagers, honeymoon couples and older visitors. It was welcoming and relaxed - an oasis from the noise and heat of Funchal.
We stayed in the superior rooms with a balcony - room was comfortable, plainly decorated and spotlessly clean. The view was fantastic from our balcony.
The staff were all helpful and this seemed to be a really well run hotel.
We had half board for some nights. The hotel serves dinner in a lovely manor house within the grounds - the service was good - but we found the half board option a little hit and miss. The half board menu was I think 42 euros per person per night and was a five course dinner. Trouble is there was no choice - it was a fixed menu. Three nights we had a lovely meal - but two nights it was really odd. It was as if there were too very different chefs at work. There was also an a la carte menu to chose from.
We found out about a great local restaurant five minutes walk round the corner and it served delicious food - and was very popular with local families. It was great value. There is also a hypermarket near by and a bakery and cafe so if you want to avoid costly hotel food you can.
This hotel is situated just outside Funchal - 5 minutes in a taxi. You could walk into town but I wouldn't recommend it - too steep and dangerous with the traffic. There is a shuttle bus Monday to Saturday at set times through the day which is free.

Room Tip: It is worth getting the better rooms - with a balcony as it puts you in the main building which I th...

Great hotel with beuatiful grounds, very attentive staff and wonderful food. Only draw backs for me were; the location - it is quite a bit out of the way and the shuttle service doesn't cover the whole day, so you will resort to taxis or for the adventurous, buses. The other is the slightly dated finish - lots of lovely antiques, but the bathrooms do need an update - yellow carpets and old bath tub/ shower combos. Both of these flaws are easily made up for by the rest.

First trip to Madeira and 'WOW' is all I can say. Hotel was everything you would expect of a five star hotel. The gardens are beautiful, the rooms good and the food in the restaurant was excellent. Views over the bay are spectacular. The only downside would be the location - it was a bit difficult to find as the main entrance is off the main street and it is about 15 minutes away from the centre of Fuchal but the hotel runs a courtesy minibus which makes 5 or 6 trips a day.

After reading the previous reviews we had high expectations of this hotel and we were not disappointed. Our room was up graded and we had a lovely view of the front gardens. All the staff were exceptional, attention to detail and could not do enough for us. It was my husbands birthday and he received a complimentary bottle of champagne, I had also requested - if poss - a birthday cake for him after our evening meal and a wonderful surprise for both of us it arrived with candles. My husband had a truely wonderful birthday. Although out of the town this added to the peaceful tranquil atmosphere and was just what we needed after a stressful first 6 months of this year. Our first night we had a complimentary welcome dinner in the beautiful setting of the restaurant. The hotel provides quite a few lounges to relax in, clean and full of antiques. We are difinitely going back and would recommend this hotel to all our friends.

We had wanted a relaxing and quiet holiday and that is exactly what we got. All the staff were extremely friendly and I think the fact that most of them had been there for a lot of years says something about the hotel. It was my husband's birthday on the day that we arrived and the receptionist noticed from his passport and wished him a happy birthday. Later that afternoon there was a knock on our door and the waiter delivered a complimentary bottle of champagne to celebrate his birthday. A lovely touch, and one we both appreciated. The gardens that the hotel is set in are beautiful and very well maintained. Breakfasting on the lawn in a morning was an excellent way to start the day. Everywhere was spotless, including the pool. Even though we stayed here in August the hotel was still quiet and peaceful, with plenty of loungers free around the pool.
The only downside was that it is quite a long way out of Funchal and the courtesy bus stopped running in to Funchal at 5.30pm each day which meant that it was a bit too early to be eating and we got a bit fed up of wandering around Funchal. It also didn't run on a Saturday afternoon or all day Sunday. However two days before we left we 'discovered' the local bus service which runs every 5 minutes from the end of the road, so that solved that problem. Pity we didn't think of it earlier or a shame that the hotel didn't tell us about it.
However we would certainly visit this hotel again.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony in the original house overlooking the lawn.

Returned after a years absence and the hotel remains as good as ever. It would seem that nothing has changed, the outstanding service from the same staff, the restaurant and general sense of comfort and attention to detail.
The rooms are a little plain and the TV could do with updating but the rooms are spotlessly clean with sheets and towelling changed every day.
QBV may not be the best place for young children. The appeal to most guests is the quite and rest fullness so children would need to be attended at all times.

Room Tip: There is limited advantage in booking premium rooms. Better to use the savings to stay longer.

This hotel definitely ticks the boxes if you want to be well looked after in relaxing, calm and delightful surroundings. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It's removed from Funchal itself but this gave it a more relaxing and away from it all feel. It is more like staying in a home rather than a hotel because of the selection of rooms and areas outside to spend time. The staff will arrange any of the trips you may wish to do ie levada walks, boat trips. There is a limited complimentary bus service but if necessary taxis are very reasonable at 6 to 8 euros. It's not the place for organised entertainment but there again that's why I enjoyed the hotel ambience so much. The restaurant is excellent set in the old part of the hotel and separate from most of the rooms, you may wish to choose the a la carte option if you have difficulty with 5 courses.
Definitely I would highly recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: I though the superior rooms better situated than the deluxe rooms, better view and nearer the dining...
