“Cold Expensive Restaurant”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2014

We spent £90 for ameal for two with water but not wine taken from the chef's choice, not a la carte. It was to be our best meal of outr two week stay.
Positive comment: the head waiter and waitresses were friendly and the food was served reasonably promptly.
However the restaurant was very cold and this contributed to a rather dreary atmosphere among the 10 diners. The food is 'nouvelle cuisine/fine dining ' style . that is good to look at tasty enough but not substantial. Indeed I would say meagre.. A light salad followed by a small piece of fish hiding a few vegetables. Pudding was a small mousse.
No view because it was dark so being 600 metres up in an unheated room made for an uncomfortable time.
We found this at least twice as much as all the other restaurants we dined in during our stay. However even if the restaurant price was halved we'd rate it poor.
If you want a hotel with a great view then this hotel has that. If you want a good meal in a cosy atmosphere go somewhere else.
Oh one final positive the mini bus to take us down to Funchal arrived promptly so we werent forced to stay there any longer. Avoid this restaurant

Went looking for the restaurant in this hotel for lunch. It looked closed but we persisted and was told it was open which indeed it was although empty. The waitress was pleasant enough but it seemed as if they wished we were not there. Waitresses chatting and moving chairs and tables around even stapling cloths to tables obviously preparing for the evening. Only one other couple came to the restaurant. A second couple came in but when they didn't receive any attention they walked out again. What a shame. A lovely restaurant in a beautiful setting with fabulous food apart from my lamb shank which was a little under cooked.

I couldn't agree more with Ann B's comments, "A little tired but excellent customer service". After reading some of the negative reviews, we were pleasantly surprised with what we found at the Quinta do Monte and would return tomorrow. Thank you Theresa for your help and enthusiasm, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your charming hotel.

Monte appeared to have fewer eateries than we expected, but slightly off the beaten track was a café in the grounds of a five-star hotel. The snack list on offer was short, but our ham-and-cheese toasties and chicken salad were reasonably priced and perfectly acceptable. It was a quiet spot to enjoy a quiet beer and a sandwich and made a very nice alternative to some of the three-course lunches we had been eating. Most of all, though, we recommend it because of the tranquility of the spot, with only eight-or-so tables and real separation from the roadside. We were gently serenaded by the sound of an accordion being played a few streets away.

The hotel is just per the photos on its web site, yes a little tired, but we would rather have the excellent customer service from their staff than a `boutique` décor hotel. As travellers, we all can do internet research, this is what we did. Quinta do Monte is situated away from the maddening crowd, if you don't want to eat in the hotel every night or take the free bus to other hotels in the group, there is only the village bar to eat at. They are charming and food selection is limited, but the wine was v gd value and view down to Funchal superb. A car is advisable, but make sure you don't take the toboggan road down to Funchal on your first day !!! Pool was v hot at 29c but was clean and there are loungers on the terrace. The kiosk in the garden is charming and a lovely place to have a light lunch and drink in the middle of the day. the hotel's gardens are beautiful. Within a 5 min walk you have both the cable car for Funchal & cable car to the botanical gardens, likewise the other botanical gardens at the `bottom` of the hotel's garden. Same distance is the start of the toboggan run and famous Monte church. If you don't want the madness of 200/300 bed hotels and want old fashioned customer service, you will find it at Quinta do Monte. Only negative, we like firm beds but theirs were rock hard and v flat pillows !

Room Tip: We were on the third floor about half way along the corridor so did not hear the lift as other custo...

Funchal unfortunately became a quite dirty and stinky, polluted city. Therefore in my opinion it is lovely to choose a place to stay where you are far from noise and pollution.
After a 10 minutes drive you reach Monte, around 600 meters above Funchal, perched on a very steep hill. Entering the property it seems that you enter in a subtropical paradise. The gardens with all those wonderful plants are just very beautiful!
Staff at the reception is very kind and helpful. I stayed in one of the four suites (410). The suite was quite spacious, the bathroom is very large and comfortable and I loved the big balcony overlooking the splendid gardens. But: who the hell rates this hotel as a 5 star? The bed is uncomfy and by far not new. The sofas are old, worn out and not really beautiful. There are 2 old and huge, bulky televisions. The carpets throughout the hotel are a desaster. Very badly kept and full of spots, prrr! The walls throughout the hotel seem to be 2 millimeters, if you want to rest or sleep in the morning no way. It is really noisy from inside, and from outside there are dogs making noise, sometimes also at 3 at night - terrible for a place which pretends to be so quiet.
The positive aspects of this hotel are the friendly and very helpful staff, the lovely and tasty food and the superb gardens. The hotel itself would for sure need a strong face lift. The swimming pool reminds me of a 3 star hotel in Bangladesh, really terrible for being a 5 star on Madeira.
However, I have to mention as well that I paid 105€ for this suite. It is very cheap, and what you get for 105€ is absolutely acceptable. Other Quintas offer more, but they also cost double or more... But it is ridiculous to rate it as a 5 star hotel. It would mean the same level as the Read's Palace abd that's no more than a bad joke.
However, I felt happy at this hotel, and for the low price I paid it was ok... And on top of that it is an oasis of peace, away from notorious Funchal.
