“AN ENJOYABLE STAY”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

My husband and I have stayed in this hotel at least four times. The last time being from the 11th to the 18th June 2014. The hotel is centrally situated for all amenities, shops, restaurants etc and the walk into Funchal is possible and very pleasant. Buses are frequent and able to take you to most places you would want to visit. Taxis are always available. There is no immediate beach near the hotel but 'black' beaches are scattered along the coastline. Madeira is not known for its beaches, but it is the most beautiful island with lovely walks and scenery. Well worth visiting is Monte, Nuns Valley and Porto Moniz. Porto Santo can be reached by ferry and has a beautiful sandy beach.

Hotel Alto Lido is a hotel and has timeshare apartments. We own a timeshare apartment in this hotel, so therefore stayed in our own apartment, which is very nicely decorated and furnishings are to a good standard. Timeshare apartments are self catering and fully cater for all needs.

There is a bath with shower and hotel toiletries are supplied. The hotel faces the sea, although some views will be obscured by other hotels built since this hotel was erected. Reception staff are extremely helpful and friendly.

Lifts are available in reception.

There is a very pleasant restaurant within the hotel and half board is available. Unfortunately I cannot comment on the food as I have never sampled it, but the restaurant was always full of guests.

There are not any grounds to this hotel and the only grassed area is around the swimming pool. The small grassed area is pretty.

The outdoor swimming pool is small and in need of renovation. There is also a children's pool in need of renovation. There is a pool bar for snacks and drinks. However, there is an indoor pool, which is quite large and very nice. There are plenty of sun beds and towels are available for a returnable deposit.

There is an entertainment lounge and bar area and during our stay, we saw a local folk troupe entertaining. There may have been more entertainment but we never witnessed it.

Free WiFi is available, but only in the reception area. There is also a payable computer area.

During our visit roadworks were in progress which could have spoilt the stay. Our room was in the front facing the road and I can honestly say that with the patio door closed the roadworks were not a problem. They did not work weekends and started at around 9 a.m. in the morning. Once finished this will greatly reduce the traffic noise that used to exist at the front of the hotel.

We would visit this hotel again.

Room Tip: All rooms are spacious and most face the sea, although now some are obscured by further buildings er...

They were digging up the road in front of the hotel which made access by taxi nigh on impossible.
One rude receptionist and lack of privacy in our rooms biased our view of the hotel which otherwise was quite good. Evening entertainment very amateurish especially the dance troupe. Didn't have the high standards and friendliness which we have found in previous visits to Funchal when we stayed in Pestana owned properties.

Room Tip: Don't accept 153/154/155 same level and adjacent to swimming pool. We had 153 people showering a...

Just come back from a weeks stay at the Alto Lido. First time visit to Madeira. The hotel is well situated with nearby access to a frequent local bus service (every 15 minutes). Our room was spacious and well furnished. As well as the usual which you would expect such as beds, wardrobe etc, there was a setee, coffee table, in a seperate area there is a dining table and chairs as well as cooker and 2 hot plates with cupboards equiped with crockery, glasses, cutlery and other utensils. We only used these to make coffee and the glasses for drinks on the balcony as we don't want to prepare food on holiday, but the option is there for those who wished. Air Conditioning is included in the room price. We stayed B&B and ate out at different resaurants each night, but you can book to include meals also if you wish. Rooms were spotlessly clean as were all the public areas of the hotel. Staff were helpful and friendly. All in all a great hotel giving us a great holiday break. Would definetely go again.

We were here for a week at Easter 2014, the hotel is exelent taken the price into consideration. The breakfast was good, but did not have much variety. The rooms were clean and kept so throughout our stay, but the service at the reception was really bad. This obviously varies from employee to employee, since there are many here who writes that it is good. Unfortunately we did not get this experience. They had little or no local knowledge, and did not even bother to order a taxi when we asked for it. This happend a cople of times. This means that the next time we go to Madeira we will choose a different hotel.

Stayed here for a week on a Monarch holiday. It far exceeded our expectations, considering the low cost of the holiday. The rooms were spacious and very clean. Views not that great but you could see the sea and local allotments. Furniture a little dated. None of these things bother me or my fellow travellers as we spent the majority of time out and about. The hotel staff were very helpful and pleasant. The breakfast were very good, buffet style and eat as much as you want. The location was good as it was an easy half hour down hill walk to town. The bus at the end of the road were cheap and frequent.I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.
Stayed there between 28/03/14 and 04/04/14.
