we rented a car in funchal airport and it took us quite a long time to reach the hotel due to the poor street signs on the island. once we arrived at the hotel we realized that both of our requests had been satisfied, we had 2 separate beds and an impressive view over the coast from our 11th floor studio. the studio was very small but absolutely functional and clean with a well equipped kitchenette. buffet breakfast was satisfactory, but surprisingly there was almost no fresh fruit and both regular bread and sweet bread were quite "chewy" ; only one day they served pancake and it was really good, staff at the front desk is very friendly and helpful , especially joanna. the hotel is the typical resort for "retired people from northern countries to survive winter" like the most part of madeira; but once you have clear in mind that you are not there for party time or to find prince charming, everything is fine. the price we paid for this great accomodation was absolutely ridiculous : 17 euros per person per night in bed and breakfast. really a great deal!!!

We have stayed at this hotel 3 times and I felt I had to give a review this time as some of them on here are so poor.

It is a 3 star hotel and compared to all the 4 and 5 star ones in Funchal it is a little dated and is on top of a really steep hill. However, there is a free courtesy bus which takes you onto the centre and brings you back, right to the top, so you can use that if you wish. We love the wonderful view across Funchal from the higher floors and would recommend that you request any room above floor 6 or 7 with a 3 on the end of the number. When I booked this time I explained that we had stayed in 703 last time and thought the view was excellent and when we arrived, we had a surprise. Some of the rooms habe been refurbished and the reception welcomed us and then offered us either room 803 or 1003, and allowed us to go and have a look before we chose. Room 803 was a twin room but had been refurbished, it had a huge walk in shower (no bath) and was very nice, however, 1003 was a double room, which had not been refurbished. We chose the double because it had a bath, as my husband doesn't like showers. When we settled in, we got a complementary bottle of Madeira, just because we were returning guests.

The room was dated, the bathroom is in need of some updating, but as I said, they are refurbishing the rooms and they will, when they have finished all be much better. I have stayed in worse hotels, but clearly some are better. We were on B & B but didn't always go down for breakfast. The rooms have a kitchen with a large fridge so we did sort of do our own thing.

The pool area is lovely and the indoor pool is very nice, the pool bar was popular and did some good food. The outdoor pool is very deep at one end, but the indoor pool is quite shallow and is the same depth at both ends. The jacuzzi is the most powerful I have ever used and the spa was lovely. It is new and was put in place of the old hairdressers and was quite resonaly priced, It has been running since June and I would recomend( I had a full body salt scrub, full body massage, indian head massage and a pedicure for 85 euros.

The staff are all lovely and very helpful. Although admittely, we do go out to eat and drink as we are not the type of people to just stay in a hotel on holiday. In the vicinity there are many nice little resturants offering local tourist menus so you don't have to walk far to eat out.

The hotel is very popular with Fench and Portugeuse tour opperators, but the staff all spoke very good english, seem to value thier customers and for me, it is a very cost effective way of staying in a very expensive holiday destination.

The hotel is situated on top of a very very very steep alley. So, it was extremely difficult to push the baby pram up to the hotel foyer. The staff are friendly and try to do the best their best.

We had a fifth floor room facing towards the swimming pool. It was a lovely surprise to find that they had already prepared a baby bed for us a well. The room itself was very neat and tidy. The only problem we had was the ANTS. We told the reception a couple of times and they tried to take care of it, but they kept on coming back. The other issue we had was with the bathroom, there was no proper bath curtain or door so when you took a shower, the bathroom would all be wet and would stay wet for hours which was very unhygienic!

The staff in the restaurant are particularly nice and interact with the children. The buffet breakfast was nothing special, no fresh fruits and the cheese tasted like plastic. Once in a while, during the course of the two weeks we stayed at this hotel, they had nice croissants. But the breakfast did get quite boring after the first week.

All in all, an average hotel with the staff trying to do their best given their options. I personally would not stay here again because of the slope at the entrance and the ANTS!

I was in Madeira with my family in February 2008. We were I (18), my mom, father and two little sisters. We all loved the hotel. The rooms were clean, the stuff was great. Only bad thing to say about the hotel is that the shower in my & my sister's room was broken. It made an awfull noise whenever you put it on. Some people called the guards because they thought someone was going to break in the hotel :D But luckily a plumber came and fixed our shower so the rest of the holiday was really nice. The water in the pool was cold, but it was February so maybe that's the reason. The breakfast was great!

We spent very nice week in this hotel and I was suprised, because I read some reviews on www.tripadvsor.com. Bathroom and room were cleaned, breakfast was adequated. Swimming pool was with clean water and surround too. Only reception's staff couldn´t
advise about some street and gardens in Funchal. We left hotel early every morning, had only breakfast.

We did not book this hotel but booked a sister hotel but due to a discrepancy we had to change to this hotel. The hotel was very clean and attractive, they took great care with the flowers inside the hotel and out. The showers in the room were lovely especially after a day's walking, one of the showers in one of our rooms was broken but it was fixed by the next morning. The staff in general were quite helpful but some could have done with smiling but I think that is just the way of the Madeira people they all look miserable.
Our biggest gripe was that they decided to do maintenance on the pool at the beginning of the high season which doesn't seem sensible, so we were without a pool for a few days, then when it was filled with fresh water it was very cold. Felt quite icy and we were numb when we got out.
Everything was expensive, even use of the tennis court but that would be partly because of the bad pound.
The entertainment was OK, the two main dancers were very good.
The gym was useless and could do with air conditioning, in fact air conditioning should be put in all the bedrooms, but the one that was in the dining room was absolutely filthy and needed cleaning, we all got coughs and we are sure it is because our table was underneath this unit.
The food was very good and it was nice to only see chips once in our fortnight.
The hotel is up a steep hill and is therefore unsuitable for people with walking difficulties, but then Madeira is vulcanic and very hilly so therefore no good for people with walking difficulties anyway.
We used the courtesy bus once into town and it is very good but gets very busy.
All in all enjoyed our holiday but would have preferred a hotel with a warmer pool.

We found the hotel a little tired .the quality of the rooms and bath rooms could do with a good referbishment. The staff could not have been more helpful, and a repair to our shower was carried out with in hours of our reporting it.
It would unfair to critisise the hotel to much as we had a pleasant stay.If you do book the hotel be sure to get a room away from the road at the back as there are a group of very noisy dogs in the houses opposite and these are a great problem.
A tip for the owners, give your fine staff a new hotel.
