We stayed in Room 537 - which is an apartment. Large room with flat screen tv, good bathroom, ample storage, kitchen with microwave, kettle, toaster, full size fridge with freezer compartment and the biggest balcony I have ever seen! Everything very clean, regular change of towels - even provided pool towels. You can eat in hotel restuarant for E12.50 buffet stlye so as much as you want really and the food was first class with plenty of choice and coffee included - bargain! Eating out was a bit more expensive - would recomment Moby Dick for the best steak ever - don't be put off by situation - its not great but food makes up for it. Also Drogedero - turn left out of hotel and take first left - opposite side of street. Very friendly and good food. Also La Bamba - higher up and over road from Drogedero. Lovely people and again good food, You must visit Tropical gardens - beautiful. Take cable car back to town - not as scary as it seems. Local buses are a bargain. Buy pre-paid ticket and its 90cents to anywhere! We took 40 min bus ride to Tropical Gdns - a tour in itself round local streets. Lovely walk along to Formosa beach via new promenade which passes new Lido complex which would be great place to go for day with children. There is entrance fee but not much. Must mention great little bakery - turn right out of hotel - not far. Lovely cakes and coffee only costs 75cents! Funchal is great - galleries, museums lots to see. We loved this holiday and were very impressed with Monumental Lido - great pools, spa treatments, entertainment (fantastic dancers in particular on one night. I could go on..... great holiday.

The Monumental Lido looks like it needs a bit of refurbishment - it's pretty old-fashioned compared with other hotels in the same area. The rooms are very small, but are kept clean enough. I had a room on the 10th floor, which had a great sea view, but I believe that some rooms faced out onto the busy Estrada Monumental, which wouldn't be ideal. The beds are very hard (not really a problem for me but it was for my mum), and it took days to get an extra pillow. My main problem was with the food - at best it was only OK, and at worst (frankly, most nights) it was verging on inedible. I'm well-known amongst friends and family for not being a fussy eater, so for me to be unable to eat a meal is very unusual. The food was hugely over-salted most nights, and the meat was incredibly overcooked - very difficult to eat. The fish dishes usually came covered in a soggy batter, which was very unappetising. Having said that, most other guests (mainly over 60s) appeared to enjoy the food. My worst experience was with the salad bar. Although this was extensive and had some very good dishes, I was completely put off on the second night when, on trying to spear a piece of lettuce which had gotten away from me, I realised that it was actually trying to get away from me, being a fairly large caterpillar and not a shred of lettuce. We also had a bit of a bad experience with the head waiter, who seemed to take it personally when we chose not to order wine with our first meal - from then on, we could not get a smile or anything out of that man, and were treated (I felt) like second-class citizens. The location of the hotel is pretty good - although the noise from the main road could, I imagine, be annoying if you had a room facing that way, it meant that the buses were right outside to take you into Funchal or Monte. Funchal itself was cosmopolitan and very beautiful, although very quiet. The shops in the centre close at 1pm on Saturdays (with the exception of the Dolce Vita mall) and I don't believe many are open at all on Sundays. There are some excellent restaurants in the old town, and I can highly recommend Estrela do Mar - they do a fantastic 13.5 Euro 3-course menu which includes both the famous Espetada and espada dishes. I doubt I would recommend the Monumental Lido though.

The hotel is located on a busy road that leads into the centre of Funchal and is positioned just behind the Lido (about a block). The lido itself is down a steep hill. Ok going down but if you have mobility problems you are going to need to take a couple of breaks coming back up!

The hotel has apparently just been refurbished. It was very clean and the staff very polite. We upgraded to a sea view room (5th floor) which overlooked the hotel pool at the front of the hotel. You could hear the road noise but it was not intrusive. Our room was functional with air conditioning and a small fridge which came in very handy. The twin beds however were hard as nails and the pillows just as unforgiving.

We were on bed and breakfast basis. Breakfast is buffet style and some what of a free for all. We did order room service which we found to be very good and reasonably priced, as well as using the pool bar for snacks.

The hotel had entertainment on each night, which was definitely geared to the older generation.

There are plenty of reasturants in the vicinity serving very good meals and a few bars. At our location, the nightlife was definitely about eating in a restaurant and then going back to your hotel. The bars tend to be very quiet and could do with some good music being played to liven them up.

All in all not a huge amount to do, a week was definitely enough for us.

Spent a week here early June ,travelled with Thomson who have turned my review but I want to give a viewpoint as this may help others, as we chose this hotel based on tripadvisor reviews. I would agree with most comments regarding Madeira in general, we had a good weeks hol. The hotel is ready for an update, our rom was on the 9th floor with a sea view, very few balconies got any sun as it tracks more or less directly overhead, the room was very clean and was kept very well by the staff. We found the beds to be very firm and the pillows were quite lumpy and uncomfortable. The towels were old and quite threadbare some days, ready to be replaced in my opinion. The food was of good quality but there is only one meat and one fish available in the evening, so i would imagine 2 weeks gets a bit boring!. We had a good hol for the price but I would go self catering next time.

This is a nice clean and comfortable hotel, however the location lets it down, there is no where to stroll at night like a proper promenade and we were expecting a choice of bars to walk to for an evening drink, the footpaths are in need of re-doing so it's not suitable for the less mobile. The road outside the hotel is very busy and noisy. If you want to save a bit of money on trips out, boat trips of just to use the bus service, go to Joe's round the corner from the hotel he speaks excellent English and you purchase your tickets from him with big savings. We went up the cable car on Monte and saw the gardens well worth it. The taxis are very reasonable and the drivers speak good English, we went to see the Nun's Valley by taxi and got a running commentary there were three of us and he charged us 50 Euros for a half-day, not bad and certainly easier than going on a coach. I would recommend this to a friend, but only that it is a comfortable and very clean hotel, a bit 'tired' and in need of a refurbish, but the food was good and we never went hungry.

Stayed for 1 week with my wife on a half board basis travelling wth Thomas Cook.Definately the place to stay.Check in was fast & efficient. We had booked a room with a balcony but were initially given a nice room (221)but it had a miniscule balcony looking onto the indoor pool roof.Asked at reception for a different room & they gave us (the only room available) room 416 which was a massive studio with 2 balconies.Absolutely brilliant room, probobaly one of the best in the hotel. At the first evening meal you were allocated a table & you kept the same table for the duration of your stay which meant you could go to dine at any time without bothering if the restaurant was busy. The food was first class. Not as much choice as other places we have stayed but it was of a lot better quality.Probobaly the best we have had.Food never ran out, the staff were constantly replenishing the dishes. At breakfast you could sit where ever you wanted & the food was good & the staff efficient. All the hotel staff were friendly & spoke good english. There was entertainent every evening which seemed to be top class but we don't go for that kind of thing. All in all if you are going to Funchal i thoroughly recommend you stay here,we certainly will again but maybe at a different time of year as the weather wasn't that good (2days of sunshine,1 rain, the rest cloudy)

JUst returned from a week at the Monumental Lido. Really enjoyed, very quiet and peaceful, all the previously stated building work has been finished. The whole hotel was spotless. Were only B&B but the food was plentiful, really enjoyed the fresh fruit, but was puzzled why there was always canned apricots. The weather was lovely. not too hot.
Plenty of restuarants near the hotel, tried a different one very night and usually decided on the Tourist Menu which we thought was good value, roughly about 13/15 euros for 3 courses.
Went on three trips East and West and Nuns Valley, all booked with Strawberry World which is just outside the entrance to the hotel and the bus picks you up directly outside.
The island of Maderia itself is beautiful, if you could time it just right for when all the flowers were out it would be spectacular.
People very friendly, all in all a very enjoyable holiday that I didnt want to come home.
