We had a lovely stay at the Monumental. Our first impressions on arrival were not good, the hotel is on the main road above a shopping centre, however the hotel did grow on us. The reception area is nice, with a library just off it with 2 computers that you can use free of charge. The room was fine; we had a nice view of the sea, but be aware that between the hotel and the sea there is another row of hotels and also lots of shops, so it is not an interrupted view by any means. We also had a fridge which was handy for keeping the alcohol cold. The one thing that was a problem was the bed, it was concrete, we ached all over for days and did find it difficult to sleep. The pool area was lovely, lots of different places to sunbathe; we particularly liked the upper deck area which had lovely sea views. The indoor pool was also very nice with a lovely hot tub, but you had to pay 5 Euro each to use the sauna and steam room which I think should be free. The free breakfast was great, a hot buffet with sausage, scrambled egg, beans & bacon each day plus lots of fruit, cereals, breads etc. The hotel bar is cosy with happy hour between 7 & 8. They also put on a show each night at ten, most were good, some were not but it was nice to finish the night with a drink.
We were only b&b as we wanted to try out the restaurants in the area and we were not disappointed. We had some lovely meals, the steak on the stone is one not to be missed, left out the hotel, turn left and it’s on the left just down some steps. It was so good we went twice, had a starter to share, steak on the stone each, dessert to share and drinks each and it came to around 45 Euro each time. We also had some lovely meals in the old town. The hotel is in the Lido area and is not really in walking distance to the old town restaurants. However, walk straight ahead out of the hotel and down the slope and you will be at the start of a lovely promenade walk, lovely at night, with many restaurants. There are also dozens of restaurants in walking distance and if you want to go to eat in the old town you can jump on the bus and be there in 5 minutes.
I would recommend you pre purchase your bus tickets before your first ride. You can get a swipe card from the shop just past ‘the steak on the stone restaurant’ and it will just cost you 1 Euro for each bus ride. It costs much more if you purchase a ticket on the bus. The bus stop is immediately outside the hotel and the number 1 runs about every 5 minutes. We also used the Aero bus from the airport, it costs 5 Euro each and stops right outside the hotel, it could not be better, much cheaper than a taxi.
We are a couple in our 40’s and were a little concerned that Madeira would turn out to be far more suited to the over 60’s, but we could not have been more wrong. Yes there are a large number of mature visitors, but there were also far more younger visitors to Funchal than we expected, all in all it was a very nice mix of ages. It is definitely not for the ‘clubbing’ type, but for anyone who wants a more sophisticated break it is perfect.
The weather in October was lovely, we were sunbathing everyday and going out in short sleeves in the evening. We went on a lavada walk, 4x4 tour, casino night & meal, up the cable car and down on the sledges, so if you want a little excitement you can find it! We loved it so much we are going back in December to see the Christmas lights.
