Just returned from two weeks in January 2011 at the Four Views Monumental
It would be easy just to say we have enjoyed our stay at the Monumental over the last two weeks. However, we would like to get our feeling over to you all out there.
It was so nice to see the smile on the faces of the girls when we checked in. They were so busy but took the time to remember us from last year and to get the same room again with all the little things that make you welcome. It was like coming home for a short stay.
We particularly liked dealing with one young lady; she is so efficient and kind. That’s not to say any of the other staff were lacking in any way. We found that several couples staying at the hotel had their favourites on reception including the men. Monumental, you run a good and happy team.
The food was varied and set out well. Fantastic as usual. All the regular staff remembered us from last time and made a point of saying so. They are so helpful when we try to speak “Madeiran” and always finish up having a good laugh with them when we get it right. They treat us like their friends not foreigners.
It is such a pleasure returning to our room day in day out, after it has been changed by the staff. They have their own way of leaving the room at its best.
One particular act is fantastic and can cover a night on his own without any of the other speciality acts. I am not saying that the other acts are not good and entertaining. They are very good, but Brian can sing a good song, play a good tune and make us laugh as well. Other people in the hotels nearby tell us that they come to hear this act more than most.
We do not particularly use the pool, but love the view. Every year the pool man runs up to us to say welcome when we arrive. Now that’s when we know we are in residence.
This hotel. is our second home, we wish we could spend more time with everyone.
Give our best to all at the Hotel
Kindest regards,
Mike M504

We visited this hotel in January 2011, staying for 3 weeks having booked through Mercury Travel. We had a deal, paid for 2 weeks half-board getting the third week free. We upgraded from B and B to half-board for the third week.

The hotel is situated about 20 minutes walk from the centre of Funchal in the Lido area. Adjacent to the hotel is a shopping mall, supermarkets, souvenir shops and excursion/travel agencies. We walked into Funchal most mornings but for those who don't want to take Shank's pony there is a regular public bus service and usually several taxis parked outside the main door of the hotel.

We stayed in a studio apartment enabling us to make hot drinks and prepare small meals in the microwave. We were very pleased with the room which was kept scrupulously clean by our chambermaid. Lovely bathroom with a great shower.

The food was delicious. Breakfast was the same choice every day, we weren't keen on the streaky bacon nor the sausage but there is a good choice of fruit, cereal, eggs, cold meats etc. It was all self-service but there was plenty of food to go round. My one quibble was the butter which was too cold to spread on the rolls/toast.

Entertainment was ok, dancing girls and folklore entertainers, usually preceded by a keyboard singer or a duo. Service in the bar was a little slow but this may have been due to under-staffing.

We did a few levada walks. We would recommend you pack some sturdy footwear and waterproofs if you are planning to do the same. Madeira can be quite chilly and very wet on higher ground, especially in January! We booked our walks with Happy Tours who are based in the shopping mall next to the hotel. They give a more personal service and use mini buses, giving you the opportunity to get to know your fellow travellers better. We were very pleased with the knowledge and reliability of the drivers and guides.

This is a great hotel and we would definitely stay there again. One tip - if you are going for 3 weeks with Mercury (3rd week free B and B) don't upgrade to half board until you get to the hotel where you will get a better deal.

Having read numerous reviews about the Four Views Hotel at Funchal, we cannot see any reason to make any adverse comment. The hotel is clean, the food is good and the staff friendly. Any complaint about the entertainment is totally unjustified, if you want to sit and be miserable, and many seem to want to, then Brian the vocalist will make a comment, if you want to get up and enjoy yourself, and a lot did, then you will love him. We would recommend this hotel to our friends. MandK

We went on a package with Thomas Cook at a fantastic price with half board included. First of all the inside of the hotel is spotlessly clean and all the staff very friendly, courteous and efficient and whoever the lady who cleaned our room is (Room 624), she deserves a big thank you as it's probably the best cleaning job on any hotel room I've stayed in...well done.
If you stay here try and get a room on Floor 6 or above at the front as you will get great Atlantic views, the views at the back low down are dismal.
Breakfast has a reasonable choice with basic food (nice bread though) and even free sparkling wine available. Dinner (included in our package) has a good choice of salads, main courses and sweets. Quality is OK not wonderful but acceptable and is a buffet arrangement. Food not always piping hot as is often the case with buffet meals. Replenishment of the some of the dishes is not always that quick but not too bad.
The dining room staff are pleasant and efficient.
The is free internet access available just off the Reception area with 2 computers available.
There are 3 swimming pools (2 outdoor, 1 indoor) which are meticulously maintained by very hard working staff.
Bar prices I thought were reasonable and there is a happy hour (more like 2) in the early evening.
Reasonable entertainment is provided free each evening.
Location is very good with a bus stop directly outside the hotel, plenty of bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity. 20 minutes walk into the centre of Funchal.
Overall the hotel can be highly recommended and we enjoyed our stay tremendously and look forward to visiting again in the near future.

I'll start with the good bits. Madeira is fabulous, especially if you like walking. Local buses are excellent. The hotel is in a great position, within the hotel zone and with public buses, including the Aerobus (airport), right at the door.
On a less positive note, the rooms are small (but very clean). The food is very, very ordinary indeed and the dining room is more like a canteen with no charm whatsoever. Reception was, at best, curt, although some members of staff were very helpful. If I was looking for a Funchal hotel, this would NOT be it.
