We loved this hotel. Our room was huge and very clean. All rooms have sea views and balconies and we loved watching the sunset while drinking a glass of wine! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was plentiful, but I found it a bit samey. We loved being a bit out of town as it was so peaceful. We used the curtesy bus and the local buses which were easy to use. I had a spa treatment which was lovely.
If you eat in Funchal... try The Mozart Restaurant. A gorgeous restaurant , amazing food and staff and great value for money.

Room Tip: The higher you are, the better the view.

Just come back from a week here - rroms and balconies a very good size. Location superb, views of the sea.
Try the bakery just up the road (turn right out of hotel entrance) - 2 cakes plus 2 coffees only 3.2 euros!
Only a short climb up some stairs opposite hotel to join levada.
On levada turn right for Funchal or left for Soccorides river valley.

Room Tip: We were on floor -3 which is nquite high up so good views

We visited from Canada for a 2 week early winter break. The weather was perfect while we stayed and we enjoyed Funcal/Maderia completely. Local Transportation is fabulous, cheap and easy to use. The Hotel is beautiful and clean, Staff was awesome and the views are just spectacular. Rooms are very spacious and the balconys on our floor were huge. Our only complaint was the food. Don't get me wrong, you certainly will not go hungry, but the buffets left a lot to be desired. We found the food at the the little restaurant by the pool much better and always fresh. We are lunch there several days, which we swapped at the front desk instead of eating dinner at the buffet.
We did a Jeep Safari tour which was awesome, our guide was second to none in my opinion and we were sure glad he was driving, especially in the mountains where it was raining and very muddy in some areas. He handled all of it beautifully and also very knowledgeable.
We were fortunate enough to be there on Dec 8 when all the Christmas Lights were turned on in Funchal. One of the most spectacular displays I have ever seen. We ate at quite a few restaurants in Funchal and can honestly say we never had a bad meal.
Also ate several times at a little restaurant not far from the Orca, it was obviously a local favorite as most of the time, we could easily tell we were the only tourists. It is right in front of the Circus/carnival and has both inside and outside seating. We had the lunch special a couple of times, it was awesome, but one of our favorites on the menu was called in English "Little Fish". When we saw it originally we thought it would be sardines, but no. I bet we ordered these on at least 4 differant occasions, either a double order as a light lunch for two or as an appetizer for dinner one evening.
We loved Madeira and would go back in a heart beat. Have done a lot of travelling in Canarys, Caribbean, Costa Rica, Panama, but have never been on an Island that is so clean and easy to see the pride of the people that live there. Almost garbage free everywhere we went on the Island, even downtown Funchal.
A long trip from Canada, took us about 15 hours overall, with stops and flight changes, but it was well worth the effort.

Room Tip: We were on the 7th floor, which was actually Minus 7 and had a great view. Only thing is you have to sit right beside the balcony edge to see the beach etc. So if you were down lower that might not be an issue.

This hotel is lovely,we went in jan 2008,the weather was between 14 degrees and 20 degrees, and a few showers, the pool was very cold, and the beach was black volcanic rock,so does not look the best! The hotel was clean, comftable, and the staff helpful and friendly. The food was very nice also. This hotel is not suitable for people with walking or breathing diffulculties,as many very steep hills, directly outside hotel entrance, and to the pool and sunbeds. Funchal is great, with many things for tourists, open top bus rides, cable cars, lovely gardens, boat trips, perfect for walkers, madeira does tend to have older tourists,i was the youngest in our hotel at 33! no children at all, that was a huge plus for us! We also stayed march 2009,and the weather was 26 degrees every day,yet it had snowed the week before, the first time they have ever had snow! our friends went oct 2011 and was 28 degrees every day,my parents loved it!!

Room Tip: All rooms face the sun,so no need to book a sea view room!!!!

We came here for break around christmas time and we were happy (and lucky!) to be lying by the pool in the 21 degree heat. The rooms are great, lots of space and huge doors that slide open to let in the air, no heating though, we had great weather, but could be an issue when colder?, the bathroom was fine, the huge walk in shower was another pleasent suprise.

The staff at the bar and restaurants were really friendly, always smiling and were willing to give us advie about different places around the hotel. We all enjoyed 'happy hour' where you can get all drinks for less money at certain times of day- perfect! We came with three teenagers/young adults and they did have lots to do, (game area, the pool, bar etc) dispite 90% of stayers being over 50. The game 'room' was not a room at all but was situated right by a stair case leading right to the bottom of the 11 floors. This was an issue as balls from the games kept falling over through the sectioned banister, and after many treks to the bottom to retreve the balls, we gave up! The breakfast and dinner was good, but much for vegetarians, but enough to not go hungry. Great salad choices and bread selections to!

The only (fairly big) fault in this hotel is the acsess to the pool. This was FINE for us, but as we could see, eldery or disabled people were finding this dificult, So if you struggle to walk up hills and lots of steps, then i really wouldn't stay here, as you would find yourslef not going down to the sea and pool much. Plus, to walk up to the main road./bus stop it's also a steep hill, ( however we walked along the monument path thing that goes straight along the sea front from the pool and much more enjoyable to get into towns and cafe's than walking along the busy main road)

We went for news years eve and a coach ran from the hotel to funchal for stayers to view the amzing fireworks, so if you're thinking of going around this time i really would reccomend it, as it's easy to get into funchal ( wich was amazingly busy, think london rush hour on the tubes and m25 traffic jams joined together) thanks to the bus and free champaign from the hotel we were all sorted and didn't have to worry about getting into the center alright.

Over all , no major faults for us, and would go back here again ! :)

Room Tip: We tried to stay in in the higher up rooms as better views ( floor 8+) because otherwise the trees and bank/hillside could block a sea view if you stay on the lowerones. If you're not bothered about sea views, then ignore that advice!
