“Good hotel after the renovation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2010

Indeed this hotel has been completely renovated. I have a single room, with a single bed. Not large room but good and nice and large TV with many channels, just not for Holland (no BVN). The bed is a bit hard, you have to like that. 3 stars means of course NO AIRCO, NO FRIDGE, NO ROOM SERVICE In summer the heat may be a problem, but the view will make up for that. Right now nobody sits outside or swims. Breakfast is just OK, English breakfast but nothing special. Luckily I am not a big breakfast eater.
For the price I paid it is great value.
It is quietly located, the only thing I hear is the nice noise of the surf of the ocean. In warm weather I would love the big private terrace.
Internet is 4 Euro an hour. Reception has bus tickets and time table.
6 km to town, this is the most far out of all Funchal hotels.

Re-opened december 2009 after a complete make-over.
Good value, large rooms, every room with large balcony overlooking the ocean.
Nice restaurant,nice bar.
Not in the centre of the action, but the hotel bus can take you to the city, or just take a bus, busstop at 50 meters, 10 minutes ride to Funchal. (and a taxi is cheap, and there are a lot of them to find)
Nice swimmingpool too.
All in all, good place to stay, clean, friendly staff, stunning view over the Atlantic

The cliff top setting affords great sea views and superb sunsets! The hotel is remote from any amenities and the courtesy bus only runs a few times a day and can be difficult to get a place. Local buses are available at a moderate price once you have mastered the system and timetables. The hotel food is plentiful and good but there is no possibility for variation. Since there is no competition nearby the drinks like tea and coffee are pricey. No drinks facilities or air conditioning in the rooms. The pool area is good and was never busy. The hotel has the only sandy(black) beach in the area, all the rest have rocks! Not for the unfit howewever as the pool is 60 steps and a slope from the hotel.

We read the reviews and thought this would be a good place to base ourselves for a holiday and get the best of both worlds-a beach holiday and near the bright lights of the city.
Sadly the hotel lacks any character and is tired and spartan. Staff are pleasant enough and helpful but the hotel does not enhance the quality of the holiday. It is clean but just has the very basics . There is no room service or food other than in the dining room
( the snackbar by the pool, a hike in itself and is closed for meals after 3 PM)
It was very hot the week we were there and there is no air conditioning. We slept with the balcony doors open and were wakened reglarly by screeching seabirds. The beds were the hardest I have ever experienced and squeaked every time you moved so I had to put the matress on the floor! It was a sheet of chipboard the matress sat on.
The buses are reasonably regular but you can't walk into town as its miles and coming back from the nearest mall the hill would kill you. Camarra de lobos is walkable but a dismal place and the walkway is closed due to falling rocks.
Madeira is beautiful and has its charms but this hotel was a real let down as it has nothing to offer its guests.

This hotel fitted the bill for what we were looking for in a holiday. It is quiet, with wonderful sea views from every bedroom. The bedrooms are large and so is the balcony. All areas are spotless and well maintained. The food is delicious, with a wide choice and more than sufficient amounts. The staff are courteous, friendly and hard-working.
We are alerted in the tour operator's brochure of the steep path down to the swimming pool area and beach. This was steep, but it was possible for all but the most immobile guests to use it. As it was, we were not going up and down many times in the day, just now and again. Most of the guests in the hotel were over 40 and making use of the hotel facilities. One could make the point that most of Madeira is up or down a hill, but that doesn't seem to deter the many thousands of older travelers who come.
We did not make use of the courtesy bus while we were there, but instead used the local bus service into Funchal, which was surprisingly frequent during the day. (However the timetable given out at reception was more than a little confusing).
The entertainment was low-key, but perfectly adequate. It must be the quietest bar we have ever been in, but that suited us because we just wanted to relax.

All in all a wonderful holiday and we plan to come to this hotel next year.

Let me warn you that Madeira is enchanting and you will want to return.

Had a really good week at this hotel. It was a late booking so may have been below brochure price but we were very pleased with it. We took quite alot of notice from reviews on this site and it paid off. We liked it because it was spotlessly clean, very relaxed, and peaceful, large rooms with full bathroom and large sunny balcony, absolutely no traffic noise and very little noise from other guests rooms. There was plenty of space around the pool although I would imagine in the summer this would change. The food was good quality and wholesome and plenty of it. A four course buffet every night and efficient service, Breakfasts were as good as we have had anywhere with lovely bread and hot or cold buffet and cereals. It was all very low key and informal dress code so if you wanted to dress up it perhaps wouldnt suit you but smart ish casual was the order of the day.
We were aware that the promenade was closed but it would have been a big improvement to be able to walk along the level into Funchal. However there is a levada we found if you just go up the steps and path opposite the bus stop by the hotel over a road and up another path. Quite steep but then it is a level, mostly easy levada path which comes out just beyond the Lido. There are several paths to descend into Funchal before this as you go along.
The bus stop is jut at the top of the drive and buses are frequent enough. The hotel courtesy bus is available if you get organised and book it the day before.
The other possible problem is nothing outside the hotel to go to except for one restaurant/bar just down from the bus stop. Only used this once for a drink but it looked very nice. The hotel bar was OK for a nightcap and low key entertainment but we were reasy for bed early after being out walking and sightseeing most of the day.

We were looking for a quiet hotel which was close to the sea, had Half Board facilities and was close to bus routes.
The Orca Praia ticked all the boxes and did not disappoint in any way.
We had heard that the walking on the Island was very good and within reasonably easy access from the Hotel by buses .
The Hotel Courtesy Bus runs about 8 times a day and drops you off close to all the bus terminals. Booking the day before caused no problems especially if done first thing in the morning. It doesn't run at the weekend. The yellow Urban Bus only costs 90cents and stops outside the hotel. Get a bus time table for all the buses. we got one at the Tourist Information Office for 1.2 Euro
The room was very spacious and always kept clean the only sound was the crashing of the waves on the beach directly below the large balcony which was furnished with table and chairs and caught the sun most of the day.
A large bath and continuos hot water made for a relaxing soak before Dinner
All the meals were to a high standard, Buffet style, with an extensive selection. I've got a very good appetite especially before and after a days walking and I didn't go hungry, just having some of the excellent local fruit for lunch.
Being our first trip we were full of questions for the Reception Team and they were always very helpfull.
We booked two day trips with www.lido-tours.com (Strawberry World) to the East and West of Madeira and they were a fantastic introduction to the beautiful scenery.
With the help of Sunflower Books we did 8 different Levada Walks un escorted and by bus. Be very careful if the tracks are wet as the compacked clay and cobbles can be very slippery.
Can't wait to go back to the Orca Praia & Madeira

  • Liked — Spacious comfortable room
  • Disliked — Courtesy Bus not running at the weekend. But not a big Problem
