“Terrible service and dingy badly equipped rooms”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2010

We arrived around 8 pm on the Saturday evening. The gates to the complex were locked and nobody was answering the doorbell or the phone. We frantically tried to call our hotel booking service in the UK but it was closed for the weekend.

I stopped a man who was out walking his dogs to ask if he knew about this hotel. He said that the owners had probably gone into town for the flower festival and he kindly offered to take us into town so that we could get something to eat and wait for the owners to return to the hotel. We put our luggage in his car and after we had eaten he took us back to the hotel. Still no one was there and we could not get in again but fortunately the owner answered her phone this time. She had assumed that because we made the booking in the UK that we were flying from there also. This was the time of the volcanic ash and no planes were coming from the UK. However, we were coming from Lisbon as we had flown there before the ash problem and the flights to Funchal from Lisbon were not affected. Also the owner told us that we should have given a time that we would be arriving as the reception is not 24 hours. Bearing in mind that she had assumed we were not coming anyway I don't know what difference that would have made.

The hotel is set in lovely gardens and the room we were given had wonderful views. The quality of the furnishings was dated and gloomy. Things didn't work such as the toaster and cooker. Also we had to ask for a remote control for our t.v. and an iron which took two days to arrive.

The location wasn't great as you have to take a bus or a taxi to get to and from Funchal especially coming back as the climb is very steep.

All in all I would never stay here again. I also found Funchal to be rather boring.

We had high hopes of this Quinta because it looked so nice on the website. We had requested a quiet room with a sea view but there was a building site right beneath our apartment with 2 large cranes obstructing the view of the sea. We were moved to a smaller studio at the back of the Quinta with no view. We would not have booked this accommodation if we had been told about the building site. It is a shame because this would have been a nice place to stay otherwise. 20 min walk to town - catch bus 32 back up the steep hill or get a cheap taxi. Lots of barking dogs but they tend to be quiet during the night.

The apartments were clean and tidy although fittings were a bit "basic". They looked as though a kitchen refit and upgrade would be be an improvement. The beds were old and uncomfortable. The standard was about average for this type of accomodation and reasonable for the price.
The biggest problem was dogs barking during the night, some times it is continuous for hours. In summer it is worse as you will want to leave windows open at night.

However views over the harbour and particularly sunset was magnificent. It was a bit odd to have a balcony from the bedroom and not the lounge but you soon get used to it, take binoculars.

The management are very caring and you begin to feel part of the family since they live on site.

Finally if you walk into town it is very steep (1:4) and narrow, we recommend a taxi or bus costing about 3 euros one way to return.

There are some good restaurants in the old town, two three course meals with wine arond 45 euro's.

Not the best apartment but all things considered its ok.

Pleasant , clean and comfortable appartmentsfor 2-3 in small complex with good view of harbour and sea in distance. Small balcony/terrace.Quiet . Pool clean . Ideal if you want peace and quiet. Most suitable for couples.Up a hill out of centre of town but bus route next to it. Friendly but unobtrusive management. Avoid the buffet evening, it's poor value for money l I would go again.Funchal is lovely, weather can be mixed but not cold. Dont' miss the cable car ride or toboggan, its not as scary as it looks.
