A real 4* star hotel in good location, but no WiFi in the clean and comfortable rooms. We enjoyed our stay there. We had nice weather to take excursions on the island. The available time table of the airport transfer bus is not valid,we landed after the last bus to Funchal .

Room Tip: the best view to the see from the room no1104( on the top floor)

First impressions count. Reception staff here were totally uninterested to the point they told us we had to pay for coffee at the pool bar as our rooms weren't ready - but we were fully-inclusive with omega holidays and should have had free coffee! Ask for a sea view otherwise you will listen to dogs barking and traffic noise, have street lamplight in your room and have NO sun on your balcony at all. We asked for a double bed but got twin beds. And we had to ask for pool towels and robes that should have been in our rooms from day one - we got them on day five. Don't ask reception for a bus timetable (the hotel is some way out of Funchal centre)- they will give you blank looks and burble some numbers at you instead. Your trips in your Omega itinerary are rarely as described - try as we might we did not go to the fishing village of Camara de Lobos first nor last. I hope you have a happier barman than Raphael who completed ignores you if you try to speak Portuguese.
On a better note the hotel is extremely clean and the cleaners are very pleasant -they could teach reception some manners! The dining room staff were exceptional especially the very slim girl with the dark ponytail -sorry I couldn't see your namebadge. The food was varied and interesting and the local wine was good. Jacqueline our tour guide was brilliant and so was Carlos the driver.
I doubt this is a 4* hotel given the scratchy towels but we did not let it spoil our enjoyment of this beautiful island.

Room Tip: Do NOT choose rear of hotel! It is noisy and gets no sun plus the view is of the road.

We were given the wrong room at check-in; something we only realised because our luggage never turned up. Once that was sorted, there was a problem with the key card to the other room which couldn't be rectified, so we ended up with a normal key instead. Room was clean, though looking at the bathroom and the tub inparticular, it was obvious it had been a while since the last refurb. Beds are VERY hard, to the point where it gave me a back ache the first three nights I slept in it... Lifts are tiny, but at least there is two of them. Breakfast was good, with plenty of choice, and the view from the restaurant stunning. Location was perfect for us; plenty of restaurants in the area and the city centre half an hour away on foot.

Had a room in upfloor with a beatiful view to the sea (with extra cost, but worth it!) Well cleaned and a friendly cleaning lady, also the other staff were nice. Room had at first a strong scent, like a broken aftershave bottle, but fortunately it could be helped with keeping balcony door open. Beds a bit hard. Breakfast ok, juicemachine was a bit slow ;) Elevators are small, full with four persons. But over all everything worked smoothly, would stay there again. Road work was being done with a lot of noise just in front of hotel, but didn't bother us, as we were walking all days. Not a bad distance from Funchal center by foot, but taxis also in reasonable prices, ab. six to seven euros to the hotel. Eated dinner once in the hotel restaurant, not recommended, a lot of other places to eat around.

Room Tip: Take a room with view!

On arrival, I realised that the reception and most of the bedrooms occupied the main tall block of the hotel. The restaurant, with a few bedrooms beneath overlooking the road or pool also had an adequate gym beneath and the swimming pool area with pool café were all in a separate smaller block in front, closer to the sea. There's a lift down to the pool area from the restaurant and 2 sets of stairs from inside the reception to the pool area too.
The sea views were excellent from all aspects.
There's been a lot of thought put in to making the exterior areas contemporary - with glass panels instead of railings facing the sea and around the pool sunbathing area - giving the hotel a good, clean, feel and warm welcome. The cleaners and restaurant staff were all very kind and helpful.
I looked at Hotel Porto Mare over the 2 roads towards the sea opposite Hotel Raga and though it was extremely plush the difference in accommodation cost was high. Most of the 5* hotels close by were on b&b basis, Hotel Raga included the evening meal in the cost and this was still a lot cheaper!!
I travelled alone and picked a great time to go as Maderia's equivalent of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival was taking place over 5 days and was brilliant.
Would I go again?
YES - its a beautiful island with lovely people and lots more than I expected to discover.

Room Tip: Those troubled with 'knee' problems should ask for the rooms above the gym and beneath the r...

The Raga is well situated for local amenities and access to the promenade and the levada Piornais. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was comfortable and kept beautifully clean by the domestic staff.

Lovely hotel rising to 11 floors, so our request for sea view and being as far away from the ground floor as possible resulted in constant view of the vlue sea - guaranteed to relax anyone. Welcoming smile from the cleaning staff in particular. We managed to get a great game of table tennis in the gym when the weather wasn't so good but the table needs a new top. Few minutes walk to supermarket and really good eating places but near enough to town centre to walk to and fro. Drawer space was in short supply but we managed OK for the week and evrything else was lovely!

Room Tip: Sea view was definitely worth paying for and the hotel design means there are about 4 per floor x 11...
