The best about Raga is the location. It is close to the sea, and small restaurants with a wide variety of international food are easy to find in any direction from the Raga. The hotel itself is quite OK, clean and well-functioning. We only had breakfast, and were fairly happy with the selections. Probably eggpowder for the scrambled eggs, but the bacon was real. Nice maidservice, and good view from our ninth floor room. All in all, we are quite satisfied with our 2 weeks stay.

We had requested a high floor room and were a little disappointed to be given one on the 2nd floor as we were told there were no rooms available at the present time on the top floors. Not a great start, but on seeing the room, a corner one, we were okay. It had a full fridge microwave and sink, which was unexpected, and everywhere was spotlessly clean. Towels were changed daily if they were left in the bath, with toiletries replaced if they were used.Water was always lovely and hot in a nice strong shower.
Breakfast was fine except for the juices which is typical of many hotels-more like squash than juice. There was always fresh bread and rolls with hot and cold buffet, plenty for everyone. We were only on a band b basis and had no trouble finding evening meals nearby or dine in the centre and catch a bus back.
The hotel is located within easy walking distance of Funchal centre for most people, The local buses ran from in front of the hotel just one street down and there are many tours that once booked pick up at hotel reception making it easy to explore the island direct from the hotel .It would have helped if reception had bus timetables but they told us to go to the bus stops to find the times!
Buy a Giro card from local shops to save money on bus fares 1.95 if you pay the driver but 1.35 euro if you use a preloaded giro card for the same journey.

Room Tip: pay the extra for a seaview room.well worth it

A real 4* star hotel in good location, but no WiFi in the clean and comfortable rooms. We enjoyed our stay there. We had nice weather to take excursions on the island. The available time table of the airport transfer bus is not valid,we landed after the last bus to Funchal .

Room Tip: the best view to the see from the room no1104( on the top floor)

First impressions count. Reception staff here were totally uninterested to the point they told us we had to pay for coffee at the pool bar as our rooms weren't ready - but we were fully-inclusive with omega holidays and should have had free coffee! Ask for a sea view otherwise you will listen to dogs barking and traffic noise, have street lamplight in your room and have NO sun on your balcony at all. We asked for a double bed but got twin beds. And we had to ask for pool towels and robes that should have been in our rooms from day one - we got them on day five. Don't ask reception for a bus timetable (the hotel is some way out of Funchal centre)- they will give you blank looks and burble some numbers at you instead. Your trips in your Omega itinerary are rarely as described - try as we might we did not go to the fishing village of Camara de Lobos first nor last. I hope you have a happier barman than Raphael who completed ignores you if you try to speak Portuguese.
On a better note the hotel is extremely clean and the cleaners are very pleasant -they could teach reception some manners! The dining room staff were exceptional especially the very slim girl with the dark ponytail -sorry I couldn't see your namebadge. The food was varied and interesting and the local wine was good. Jacqueline our tour guide was brilliant and so was Carlos the driver.
I doubt this is a 4* hotel given the scratchy towels but we did not let it spoil our enjoyment of this beautiful island.

Room Tip: Do NOT choose rear of hotel! It is noisy and gets no sun plus the view is of the road.

We were given the wrong room at check-in; something we only realised because our luggage never turned up. Once that was sorted, there was a problem with the key card to the other room which couldn't be rectified, so we ended up with a normal key instead. Room was clean, though looking at the bathroom and the tub inparticular, it was obvious it had been a while since the last refurb. Beds are VERY hard, to the point where it gave me a back ache the first three nights I slept in it... Lifts are tiny, but at least there is two of them. Breakfast was good, with plenty of choice, and the view from the restaurant stunning. Location was perfect for us; plenty of restaurants in the area and the city centre half an hour away on foot.
