“Hotel With Beautiful Seaview”
Reviewed 16 May 2010

We have spent some days at hotel Raga during our stay in Madeira with a large group of other travellers.Hotel is located out of Funchal center, but below the hotel is main street where you can catch either local bus(I recommed to use public transport) or taxi (price can vary so negotiate before you get in), where you can find also lots of restaurants, caffes and shops.Around the hotel are lots of other hotel facilities, everything for tourist's needs.
We stayed in room nr.808 (8th floor), which faces the Atlantic and in sunny and sunshine days you can enjoy wonderfull sunset...let me tell you hotel doesn't have its own beach (it lies little far from the sea),anyway we were in February, which is not a bath season...
We were little disappointed abot the meals in hotel restaurant, which were both breakfast and dinner every time we had them the same.I cannot imagine spending my one-week holidays including full board, and hotel with 4* should offer wider range of food and not only ham&eggs, cheese, jam, tea, coffe for breakfast and rice pasta and meat for dinner...I mean meals should me more various and diverse....
I don't have any other comments about hotel Raga, except hotel meals....

Just got back from a week in the raga and 3 extra days stay due to the volcanic ash, The hotel raga from appearence looks really nice and it has been refurbished 2 years ago according to the taxi driver. A few pros and many cons to the hotel, pro's are the staff are friendly on the front desk, maid service was good, lovely pool and in a good location with views looking out to the atlantic if you are booked in the front of the hotel, the rear just looks onto a street. Here are the con's, No Wi-fi WHAT 21st century!! internet was broken in the lobby throughout the whole stay, no iron - Kettle or trouser press bearing in mind it is a 4 star hotel, fridge was empty, breakfast was nelow par in my view, evening meal was a buffet throughout the stay and for 20 euros not worth the money in my view as you can go 30 seconds down the road and pay that for a nice steak. The Manager was a slime ball in my eyes and the front desk staff mainly spoke french and german and had very little english, If you like germans then this is the hotel for you but if you dont like arrogant selfish germans book another hotel. Overall my stay was not a pleasent one but average and to top it off there is only 1 channel on the tv in my room which was sky news which repeats and repeats but if you are german french or spanish then you will love the tv. Around funchal and the Lido district where the hotel is there is many coffee shops and restaurants, when walking past them they all try to get you to come into their bars and restaurants which pees you off as you have to say no thanks every 15 seconds. Beware of all the trips which are advertised as 2 persons with a meal tours for 30 euros, you do get it at this price but they are all timeshare, some tell you and some dont and to get the trip for that price you have to be old and be willing to listen to slime ball in a hotel for 90 minutes trying to get you to do timeshare, they were not really interested in me as i am only 30 years old so we had to pay the 90 euro price, also beware of the survey english women on the strips who say they are doing a survey then you put your hand into her folder and guess what you win a prize, and to get the prize you guess it timeshare, Food and drinks on the island are very expensive, there is a lovely indian called bombay palace which we went to twice but it is a little on the pricey side but the manager is indian who has excellent english and can advise you on what to do and what to look out for. The local transport is amaizing 1 euro to travel anywhere on that bus journey, to get this for 1 euro go into a shop which displays GIRO and these shops are mainly wine and alchol shops, you simply purchase a card for 1/2 a euro (50 cents) the just load it up with euros and scan at the front of the bus when you get on and it deducts a euro. The cable car is a must to go upto monte a nd at the top of the mountain to speak you can get food and drinks and the tabogon ride is there also. We didnt go on it as it was a total RIP off, 25 euros to be pushed at 6 mph down a hill, they stop half way down and ask for a tip and you have to get a taxi back or walk but i was told to not get a taxi if i went on the ride as they overcharge you. There are no beaches on the island apart from a man made beach which is at the other end of the island from thehotel.

We were originally put in room 712. Unfortunately this was at the back of the hotel overlooking the back road and was very noisy. The room was very small and smelt musty!! We had paid for a bigger room and Ester on reception gave us the choice of 1111 or 511. When we looked at 511 it was on the back corner but the view was the next hotel!! But 1111 was perfect. Although on the same back corner because it was on the eleventh floor we had a lovely view into Funchal and over the sea. The morning sun streamed onto our balcony ay 7.00a.m.!!! Make sure you have a room that sleeps 3/4 for the bigger room. The location of the Raga is perfect . You can pick up all the trips and buses from 30 second walk out the front . The chambermaids were a happy group and kept our room clean but also did the fancy bedmaking with my nightdress made into different shapes. The breakfast is adequate with enough to make a good cooked breakfast (and continental) but the self-service area is badly planned so there is alot of congestion. Pool area and bar/cafe are clean and well staffed. Our dining tips for outside the hotel are : for lunches and lovely fish & chips on Friday nights go to see Dino at Barracuda Bites above the supermarket in the Eden Mar shopping complex. Great omelettes and Dino is really great too!!! For a posher evening meal you can't beat Moby Dick ( on the right towards town) the steaks are to die for. Our favourite place for a relaxing drink ( and steak sandwiches) is O'Briens Pub with Claudia. (Further along towards town). For younger people The White House Pub along the back road out of the hotel was lively and welcoming. We had been told to use Strawberry Tours and they were very good. Very cheap. Alfredo was a very good driver and guide. Beware the taxi drivers especially number 1001 in Funchal. He agreed to take us to the Botanical gardens and then back to our hotel but he upped the price when the time came to take us back!!!!! Oh, and Five ( the downstairs restaurant at the Raga) they microwave the steaks.....ugh!!!! Last note... the damage by the landslides.....the people of Madeira are cleaning it up fast .....our holiday was not affected at all except that our hearts went out to all who had lost houses and whose shops had been flooded. Good luck to all of them and do not cancel your trips.

The location of the hotel is a mixed experience. On the other hand, it's in the middle of the Lido area (a district full of tourist hotels) and all the basic services are nearby. But the city center of Funchal is 30 minutes walk away. The view from the ninth floor is great and you can see over all hotels nearby - from lowest floors the view is probably quite poor. The public areas and the room was very clean, and the absence of wall-to-wall carpeting probably makes this hotel a good choice for allergic people. There was only one free electric plug in the room, and it was hidden behind a bedside table. The minibar was empty - they are probably too scared to keep alcohol in there, because most of the customers were package tour tourists... There was only a few tv channels available.

The breakfast buffet was average by selection. We probably got a stomach disease from the buffet (we can't be sure about this, but we heard that some other people in the hotel had similar, quite strong symptoms), but luckily the medical clinic was nearby.

In overall, I would try another hotel during my next stay, but if you get a good bargain, this is ok, too...

Just returned from Madeira,we stayed in the Hotel Raga (we arrived the monday after the floods in Fuchal!!!!) The hotel is in the lido area of funchal about 10mins walk away from centre of funchal.I must say its a lovely place didnt get to see much because our rep advised us to stay in the resort area until the thursday,so didnt do any of the excursion then myself and my partner came down with a horrid tummy bug!! Apparently according to people that went to the botanical gardens said it was a rip off due to hardly any flowers mainly shrubs at this time of year! All in all it was a relaxin break for a week loads of restaurants and cafes,Lido boutique cakes to die for yummy.

Just got back from a week at the Raga via Direct Holidays UK. I Was very pleased with the location and thought we were allocated a very nice room. It was at the back of the hotel overlooking houses and villas, but I was happy to be away from the main road at the front of the hotel. Only negative was some barking dogs in people's houses. The hotel is very clean and modern. The pool is a suntrap so we were able to swim on a sunny afternoon. Breakfasts were good with fresh fruit every day and a choice of delicious local bread, as well as the usual cooked stuff. Other guests were from various countries so not a "Brits only" enclave also mainly mature couples. Ideal as we just wanted somewhere quiet to chill out and had no interest in hotel-based entertainment: We were out and about a lot and went into town most evenings so were just wanting somewhere clean and comfortable to go back to at night- which is what we got.
Hotel location is good, close to local cheap and frequent busses. It's a longish walk into Funchal but very pleasant. There is also a large supermarket close by........Also a great cake and snack place almost next door as well as other local places to eat. We didn't eat dinner at the Raga as we chose a B&B deal.
Very good and would stay again.
