The Hotel Raga was what we had expected as we had read up before we left. The reception staff were friendly and helpful but we arrived at 12pm and our room was not ready till gone 2pm so we were left hanging around a little. The room was very clean and tidy and beds were comfortable. We stayed in room 701 which had 2 balcony's!!! As we already knew there was no tea/coffee making facilities so we took a kettle etc with us. The blue pool towels were left in our room on the second day, and they could be exchanged with the pool attendant throughout the stay. The lifts are small and you can wait a little while at busy times.
The pool was clean and attendants were helpful if you need towels/sun loungers etc.. We had bed and breakfast which we had no complaints... people had complained there was not much choice in there reviews but we felt there was most things you could want from breakfast - breads, pastries and cereal, to cooked items, fruit and yoghurt and different hot and cold drinks... What else do you need?????
There is two ways of leaving the hotel - we found by going out by the pool exit you were on the best road and you can go either left or right for eating out or shops. One recommendation is to take a left from here and in 50 yards you'll come to the best cake shop and it's open till 10pm.... nice for coffee's too.........
If you take a right and walk along the main road for around 20 minutes you come to a lovely indoor shopping centre, with lots of trendy shops (idea for young teenage girls) as well as McDonald's... also there are lots of other nice restaurants.... nice to get indoors and out of the heat for a while.
If you go left you can walk into Funchal town which takes about 30 minutes along a fairly busy road, if you walk along by the harbour there some lovely little boats you can sit and eat or just order drinks and on some nights there was live music. We found the old town a little scary, with a few of the local wino's sitting on benches which could be quiet scary if your young etc.....
The hotel raga is situated centrally from most restrants and shops, there is walking where ever you choose to go - We think that is the case no matter where you are staying on the island - it's very hilly...... I also recommend to pop along to Joe's shop (left out of pool exit, then first left turn and 2 minute walk). You can buy your Pay-as you-go bus ticket, only 50 cent and then 1 Euro per journey, if you pay the driver it's 2 Euro's. I would suggest that when your walking around that you note the bus numbers that go by your hotel – as when your in town there are lots of different one's and you could get lost a little.
The weather was nice and by the last day the temperature was getting hot... in the mornings it was mainly overcast but it soon got burnt away by the sun. It was strange walking around the island as you can look up to the mountains and they can be covered in cloud but your walking in the sunshine... great for some picture postcards......
All in all we had a lovely week and would recommend it for those looking for a nice, quite, do nothing get-a-way......... The island is beautiful and great for walking and screncery. We would love to go back but for 2 weeks - first week to fit in some ot the larvarder walks etc... and then the second week to chill and relax.
