Owner description: Acquired in 1840 by Charles Ridpath Blandy, the Blandy's Wine Lodge has always been and is still an integral part of the production of Blandy's Madeira Wine. Located in the center of Funchal, Blandy's Wine Lodge allows visitors to Madeira an opportunity to experience first hand Madeira Wine in the making. Our tours will guide you through some of the history of the wine, its development and evolution, as well as the opportunity to taste the various styles of Madeira. Blandy's Madeira celebrated its bicentennial in 2011, the Blandy Wine Lodges give you a privileged perspective on 200 years of Madeira Wine. The lodge was bought by Charles Ridpath in the mid-19th century and not only was it an extremely valuable property, but was also very useful due to the fact that it was directly connected to the family's town house. Each one of the Lodge's rooms have their own character and due to the differing temperatures and humidity, the wines all have differing ageing profiles based on their location within the lodge. The eastern warehouse holds wine dating back to 1920 and the family's private vintage collection is held within thick stone walls, below the ground floor. The museum holds artefacts that include letters from Sir. Winston Churchill, coins from Blandy's bank and the island's oldest wooden lagar, dating back to the 17th Century. Murals from the renowned German artist Max Romer decorate the tasting room and references from the company's wide range of vintage wines are held in the sala frasqueira. Today the Lodge is the heart of the family's wine business where over 650 casks, tonnels and vats are stored, ageing the finest of the family's wines in the traditional canteiro method.

Nice overview of the history of madeira wine by a very knowledgeable guide who spoke good English. Great value for money (tour + 2 drinks were €5.50 per person for the tour we did) would recommend you do this if visiting madeira.

“Not to be missed if you like Madeira wine”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

We did the premium tour which was well worth €5.5 each. This was very well presented explaining how Madeira wine is prepared and stored to produce different vintages. It is followed by a tasting of two wines. We enjoyed it. Finally there is a shop with reasonably priced wines. Not to be missed if you are in Funchall.

Very interesting and excellent value for money. We got to sample two different wines at the end of the tour. Check the times of the tours though as they run several throughout the day, accommodating the various languages of visiting tourists.

“Don't forget you free tipple at the end.”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

I have visited wineries in other countries but to tour usually stops when the wine goes into the vat or barrel. The story at Blandy’s starts when the wine gets s into the barrel.
This was really interesting end entertaining by the guide we had. There is some social and political history; technology and general interest. Very enjoyable, and don’t forget the tasting at the end, very nice.

“Short afternoon visit at Blandy's”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

We visited the Wine Lodge and went on the basic English language tour. We booked in the morning then came back a few hours later.
The group size was massive - I think perhaps a little too big? (Although that might have had something to do with the cruise ship that was docked in Funchal)
It was interesting - what I could hear, but the tour guide although speaking English I found very difficult to understand.
There was a tasting opportunity after a tour around the building which we enjoyed - what would have been useful, would have been given a card or piece of paper written down what we tried.
