“Enotel Lido Madeira”
Reviewed 15 July 2014

This is a late review from February. My husband and I felt the need of a break somewhere warm. We were pleasantly surprised at how hot it was and were able to sunbathe by the pool. The hotel was excellent, good location, great food. The service from the staff was very good. The public areas were lovely as were the rooms. If we go again I would upgrade our room as we looked out on a road where there was a car park and delivery vehicles started early so it was noisy if we opened the door to the balcony. We enjoyed the entertainment in the evenings. We went mainly for a rest but did venture out several times. We took a full day tour of the South and North of the island which was very good. We saw beautiful scenery, made several stops in places of interest and had a very nice lunch in Restaurante Cachalote at Porto Moniz. There is a good bus service to Funchal, though we chose to walk. We went by cable car at Monte to the Palace Gardens then another cable car from there to the Botanic Gardens, both well worth a visit. There is a lovely restaurant near the hotel which I cannot recall the name of, the hotel recepionist or your courier will know. It is unique in that it serves "steak on a stone" a red hot slab of marble on which one cooks their own steak at their table. Although we were all inclusive it was worth a trip to this restaurant to experience something different. There is a Spa at the hotel and I had a full body massage. I have had many in countries wordwide and this was one of the best. I would definately recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to have a side sea view, the outer rooms overlook a car park and it is noisy when d...

Our 4th floor superior room overlooking the pool was fine. Bathroom nothing special but clean, shower a little tired maybe. Room spacious and clean, a few little niggles with TV and sockets but these were quickly and efficiently sorted. Problem with these rooms is that they directly overlook the terrace area outside the sports bar which is open until 2 am. During our stay a large conference party was in residence and they liked to drink and converse loudly together on that terrace, until the early hours. We asked the reception to ask them to quieten down on a couple of occasions until approx. 1.30 am one evening, but nothing was done.

On the following evening the same group assembled and were very quiet. It appeared that hotel management had spoken to the group and this was later confirmed to have been the case. The morning afterwards we were contacted by guest relations and offered an upgrade to a suite on the opposite wing of the hotel but we declined because we were satisfied that hotel management had dealt with the situation and that was the purpose of our complaint, not to seek a free upgrade.

Unfortunately this proved to be a mistake. That evening the conference group returned to the terrace beneath our balcony and made more noise than ever into the early hours. We again asked reception on a couple of occasions to request quiet from the group but to no avail. There were no senior staff on duty at this time, just junior bar staff in the sports bar and the reception staff who were extremely courteous but did not have the authority or experience to manage the situation. The hotel management had gone home to sleep soundly whilst neglecting the best interests of the majority of its guests by allowing this group to continue to cause a disturbance.

I haven't written to the hotel separately to share my views so management, if you're reading, I would recommend that you ask large groups who are likely to congregate together to respect other guests and keep the noise down. Perhaps erect some discrete, polite signage outside the sports bar asking all guests to respect the interests of others and limit noise after midnight? Whatever, don't just ignore the situation as you did on a couple of occasions during our stay. This is clearly a problem for the hotel, as was acknowledged by the staff we raised the issue with and it needs to be addressed.

With two nights of our seven night stay remaining and and two of the previous five having been badly disturbed, we reluctantly asked if we could move to any room with a quieter position away from the sports bar terrace. There was some initial reluctance but we were given a 10th floor suite on the opposite wing of the hotel which was very good and very quiet.

All of the hotel's staff we encountered at reception, in the restaurant and bars were extremely friendly and efficient at all times and the hotel must be highly commended for this.

The restaurant food was very good for an all inclusive buffet offering. But the dinner service fell well short of 5 star. Again it was friendly and efficient but the food presentation could have been better managed during busy times, water was served un-chilled from plastic mineral water bottles, plates were removed immediately from under your nose as soon as you'd replaced your knife and fork whilst others on the table were still eating. Plates were scraped into waste buckets at a number of service stations in close proximity to the tables. Always a good flow of half decent (ish), for all inclusive, wine served by the glass at the table from bottles. Bottles were left on tables with larger numbers of guests. The breakfast buffet by the way was excellent.

We didn't each lunch in the restaurant. The all day snack bar adjacent to the sports bar terrace offered a very good and well presented lunch choice - burgers, hot dogs, chips, pizza, pasta and a couple of main dish options as well as potatoes, veg and salads and a few desserts. Carte D'Or ice cream cones available all day too!

The pool area is immaculate, cleaned daily and there were always good quality sun beds available. The 'entertainment' music was occasionally obtrusive but it was okay at the opposite side of the pool.

The lobby bar is a very pleasant environment. Unfortunately the noise from the 'entertainment' bar on the fifth floor below dominated in the evening and spoilt the atmosphere. We didn't go to see any of the entertainment so can't comment, but it certainly didn't sound good from the lobby bar!

On drinks, the offering was more than satisfactory for an all inclusive. Can only comment on the beer which was palatable for a continental cerveza, good Gordon's g&t and an Irish cream called Carolans which was apparently very good. The cocktails though were extremely disappointing, pre mixed and limited in choice. A 5 star rating demands better.

All in all though this was a very good all inclusive experience and despite the issues mentioned we might even return one day, particularly if our comments are noted and acted upon.

Madeira is beautiful and Funchal charming. You need to eat and drink out too as, we did on a few occasions, it would be a great shame not to escape the confines of an all inclusive hotel as we observed that many didn't. The cable car to Monte and either the tropical or botanical gardens (or both) are a must, as is an open top bus tour, and a Levada walk. There are numerous island tour options and boat trips which we didn't have time for, with the requirement for some poolside relaxation in our 7 days, though we did walk to the delightful fishing village of Camara de Lobos from the hotel via the coastal promenade pathway. A very pleasant, approx. 5 mile walk. The restaurant 'Beef and Wines' on Avenida do Infante not far from the Casino, provided a great dinning experience, as many have reviewed positively. And drinks on the terrace outside The Ritz in Funchal centre entertained by two excellent guitarists made for two very pleasant evenings.

First time on Madeira and at this hotel. The hotel is lovely and the staff helpful and pleasant (apart from a couple at the pool side restaurant at lunch-times!). Its fairly central so you can get into Funchal quite easily and there are a couple of nice bars along the main road to go for a change as the entertainment is not that great!

We had requested a high floor for our room a few days before we left the UK and we were on the 9th which was great, quiet and had a nice view over the pool. No problems with lifts never had to wait that long. The room was very comfortable and kept lovely and clean.

The pool was very nice, there was usually enough sunbeds apart from at the odd lunch-time on a very sunny day people did struggle a bit, but towards the end of our holiday we noticed a few more had appeared. You weren't supposed to reserve sunbeds but people did usually on their way to breakfast. It didn't cause too many problems apart from one day when someone complained and the pool guy was told to remove all the towels!!

What let this hotel down was the food. We've been to several All Inclusives and I would say this was the worst for food. It was basically just OK - nothing special and very samey. The choice of desserts was very poor, it was basically different flavour mousses and cake. The food at the pool bar at lunch-time was not good and when we were there was always running out, a couple of times my husband had to ask for more chips and fresh pizza, one day I even had to ask them to slice some more tomatoes as these had run out in the salads- someone needs to take charge down there.

We tried the Italian and the Madeiran and we enjoyed them both, we felt people rushed their food rather than being rushed.

Madeira is a lovely island and well worth a visit.

Room Tip: We were on the 9th Floor - very quiet

Lovely property with helpful friendly staff - lovely breakfast & lunch in the coffee shop was good. Dinner in the buffet restaurant was ok to terrible, and the Italian restaurant was awful! We did not try the other restaurants. Some of the entertainment was ok - the 'clown' who appeared randomly on Tuesday and who was a juggler on Wednesday was really annoying and should have kept his act for the kids club - not good! All in all a good holiday in a 5* property with 5* staff, but 3* food and entertainment.

Room Tip: The higher the better

This was our first visit to Maderia, after doing our research we chose the Enotel Lido.
We could not have chosen a better hotel, we arrived to discover that we had been allocated room 433, this has one of the largest verandas I have ever seen it was at least 40 x 24 feet with the sun on it from first thing in the morning till sundown, seperate sitting room with kitchen and the bathroom had jacuzzi bath with seperate shower, must be the best suite in the hotel, so if you want space this is the room for you.
All the staff were very helpful, nothing was to much trouble, the food was first class there is no way you cannot find something to eat in the main restaurant.
On arrival we were informed the bar was 24hrs and after 2am you can help yourself, I did not take them up on this but was assured by others that you can go behind sports bar bar and make pour your own drinks.
If you want a relaxing holiday this is the place, dont believe all you read about it being for the older person, yes there are many but the young kids are welll looked after by the entertainment team.

Room Tip: Room 433 first class sun all day with large veranda
