We stayed 8 days and almost everything was ok. Outstanding staff, very friendly and professional. Comfortable and clean rooms. Food was the downside though. It was good but not up to a 5 star hotel. Breakfast wasn't varied and very basic lunch. Good dinner.
Overall, worth to come.

Reviewed 10 August 2014

In my reviews I try to be honest and objective, and this one is no different. I have just returned from the Enotel Lido, having spent 7 days there, the hotel has a modern exterior in marble and glass but looks a little drab on first sight. On entering reception first impressions is it's quite dark, for me the lighting was a little too subdued. First appearances were that the public areas were clean and smart, reception was efficient and very quick, I felt they could have spent a little more time explaining the lay out of the hotel. Ie Reception is on Floor 6, main restaurant is on floor 2, there are 10 floors, pool area is at floor 1. We were located on floor 9 of the east wing which overlooked the street, the room was a twin/ double which was very clean and well maintained, one small problem with the room door which had to be lifted slightly to fully lock.
The hotel has an entertainment team who try hard to keep the guests happy a number of acts provided evening entertainment. Bars were well stocked and waiters kept the drinks coming both during the day and the evening.
Restaurant buffet style service for breakfast and dinner, waiting staff were efficient in providing wine and water but failed to return for top ups, most waiting staff were pleasant and efficient. Food was reasonable but not 5 star, trays were slow to be replaced when empty, choice was limited, vegetables were few to be seen. Lunch is served in the Italian restaurant by the pool again a buffet service supposedly serving between 12 and 3 we went down at 2 on two occasions and there was little if any food available we waited on both occasions to see if it would be replenished and on both it wasn't. So if you want lunch be there for 12 or just after.
Staff with the exception of the waiters and barmen were abrupt and seem somewhat unhappy in their jobs, reception staff could learn that a warm smiling face greeting guests goes a long way to putting guests at ease. When passing the cleaning staff we wished them good morning but rarely got a response even when spoken to in Portuguese.
Pool is about normal for this type of hotel with a good number of sun loungers but as usual the early morning towel brigade are out there claiming their spot, despite the warning in the hotel guide that reserving sun loungers by placing items on them was not allowed and that staff would remove such items to reception. One day 4 sun loungers in a prime position were claimed by the towel brigade but remained unused for 5 hours. Pool was clean, small child's pool situated nearby and an indoor pool in spa area. Many hotels along the promenade allow guests to enter directly from the promenade the Enotel lido has a gate to the promenade which a number of guests used to get onto the promenade but could not gain access back to the hotel because there is no way to open from outside.
So if you want a 5 star experience look elsewhere, this hotel is a 3 plus or mediocre 4, it's clean and well maintained but lacks the touches that a five star offers, management should look at reception presentation and welcome, a smile costs nothing. Everyone has different views and expectations, of a hotel unfortunately this one left me wanting more than was offered. Needs to try harder.

We stayed for a week at enotel lido at the beginning of August and generally we thought the hotel was great.

The food is a real strong point of the hotel: it is fresh and well cooked- something that we have not experienced at other 5* all inclusives. There is large variety in the main restaurant and the à la carte restaurants are very good, especially the sushi one. The only thing that could be improved is the poolside lunch buffet since it was very repetitive.

The rooms are modern and immaculately clean. The beds are comfy but they would benefit from some feather pillows. The hotel is spotless throughout and we never saw any dirt anywhere. They do have a pigeon problem though, which probably isn't helped by the number of guests who feed them.

My main issue with the hotel was the service. We had particular issues with the fact that there are signs saying not to reserve sunbeds as it is forbidden however it isn't enforced- so we found ourselves 2 days in a row without sunbeds. When we complained nothing was done and the problem persisted, there were guests having to lie on the grass which is absolutely unacceptable at a 5* hotel. They also don't have enough sunbeds for everyone so make sure you get up early to reserve one!

It also seemed strange to us that the hotel didn't run a minibus into funchal since this is quite commonplace in all the all inclusives we have been to. But aside from the service issues the hotel is fantastic, but several issues really do need to be addressed; the receptionists are unhelpful and the wifi connection throughout the hotel is poor. If these things were sorted then I would certainly have rated the hotel 'excellent'

Just returned from a very pleasant weeks stay in the Enotel Lido.

Facilities -

Pretty well everything you need, this hotel has it all - Large main reception (on the 6th floor) with piano bar, 5th floor ballroom, reading area and games room/library, 2nd floor main restaurant, 1st floor pools, sports bar, three themed restaurants (Madeiran, Japanese, Italian), kids club, well equipped gym, bike spinning room, and a great spa (heated indoor pool, hot tub x2 and salt water dip pool with rock walls and night time starlit sky effect ceiling, two saunas and steam room plus paid for treatments) and probably other stuff that we did not discover in the week we were there.

Rooms -

Redecorated in 2011 the hotel still looks clean, fresh and modern. We has a suite on the 10th floor with large bedroom, large bathroom with bath and shower and a sitting room with settee, TV, Minibar, table and chairs (plus extra bed for our son). Also there was a balcony that you could play five a side football on (almost). It looked like there were three of these type of room on floors 4 to 10 and are on the end of the two main wings. Other rooms looked like they had pool or sea view balconies but I could not guarantee this.

Food and Drink -

Some of the best all inclusive food I have had, not the most varied selection I have ever seen but all well cooked and not at all mass produced and the fresh cooked meat and fish (on the "show cooking" area) was lovely. Also part of the package is three themed restaurants that offer waiter service, 4/5 course "set" menu type meals at 7pm or 9pm. These need to be booked up when you get there as there are only about 30 places per sitting and they do not operate every day. The Japanese was very good but all are worth trying and split up the buffet dining nicely. The Italian also doubles up as an all day pool restaurant which, along with the sports bar, serves hot food, salads, deserts, drinks and icecream all day. House wine was pretty good and the drinks seemed to be mainly branded which along with the free themed dining is unusual in an all inclusive in my (limited) experience.

Entertainment -

In the evenings, if you are after potted version of west end musicals performed by the entertainments staff (which is often the case) this is not for you. Entertainment was either dancing shows in the ballroom or a variety of cover artists (male, female singers and sax/pianist) by the pool in the evenings, all of very good quality, not your usual karaoke performers. There was also an evening when there were traditional dancers. Pretty good to wind down at the end of a hard day by the pool !

During the day was a range of activities including aquafit, table tennis, table football, a snooker table, water polo, bingo, a parrot show (?), Poncha making and bingo if you wanted to join in but this came without too much arm twisting from the staff, very informal.

Things to do/location -

It is about 20 mins by taxi/mini bus from the (very quiet) airport or there are local buses for Euro5 each way if you want to be adventurous.

There is a nice promenade walk both way out of the back of the hotel, steps also lead down the the "beach" where you can swim in the sea, there are restaurants and shops out the back of the hotel as well if you fancy a change. It is about 20 minutes by bus or 45 minutes walk into Funchal town.

We took the Yellow/Blue bus (Euro12 for a two day pass, hop on hop off) into Funchal, went up the cable car, came down on the traditional toboggans and then decided to walk from there back to the sea front. Be warned it is very steep , about 3 Km and you will find out you have muscles that you did not know you had unless you are a hill climber by profession. Taxis can be hired to take the strain though. There are loads of other excursion but being there a week we only did these.

The only slight area for improvement is the strength and coverage of the wifi (which is free so should not complain to badly) but we were on holiday so no real dramas there.

Finally, as you have guessed we really rated this hotel, one of the best all inclusive I have been too and would recommend it highly, given the themed restaurants, high food quality, decor/rooms, helpful staff and great spa (my other half who knows a thing or two about these things rated it a "close to the Sanctuary in Covent Garden", high praise I assume !) it deserves the five stars.

Room Tip: Room 1019 - two room suite overlooking pool with big terrace, like being in the penthouse suite!

We spent a week at this hotel, the check in was quick and staff very friendly and helpful. We had upgraded our room and were not disappointed we had a suite which was very roomy, a huge balcony overlooking the sea, room 748, the maids did a really good job keeping it clean. The food was good and plenty of it. There was never a wait for drinks. There is a bus stop outside where you can get into Funchal, we went on the cable car which was quite an experience. The entertainment at the hotel was a bit lacking and it would have been nice to have some nibbles with your drinks in the evening. If you book this hotel you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: A sea view room. Book a suite the balcony is huge

Well what a fabulous place this was. There was 10 of that went ranging from my 1 year old up to my parents (60 plus). The layout of the hotel was easily navigated with plenty of lifts / staircases. All the communal areas were clean, comfortable and relaxing however they could have been a little cooler on the A/C side of things (especially the restaurant).

The main buffet restaurant was fabulous with lots of food to choose from ranging from local cuisine to basic foods for the more picky eater (just like me). The staff in the buffet restaurant were brilliant. There were very friendly and helpful and made an extra fuss of the children, especially our baby, which made our family meal times extra special.

This hotel also has 3 specialty restaurants, Madeiran, Italian and Japanese. Our family visited the Maderian and the Italian during our 1 week stay. Both meals were enjoyed by all that ate there but the found that the Italian was not as friendly and suitable for larger groups whereas the Maderian restaurant was very friendly and interactive with local dancers entertaining diners. On both counts the food was of a very good quality but the experience in the Italian was not as enjoyable on the whole.

Entertainment - there was a good mix of evening entertainment with 2 main areas for it. Outside and also in the Moonlight bar. We spent most evenings outside as we found the Moonlight bar was far far too hot to really enjoy the entertainment on offer. The entertainment was of a good standard but we were disappointed that there was only 1 evening with some sort of local / traditional entertainment.

Pool area and outside entertainment - There were 2 pools (large pool and baby pool) outside and 1 indoor pool in the spa. The outdoor pools weren't heated so on overcast days they took a bit of getting in to but once you were in they were fine. We were a touch disappointed that the baby pool wasn't heated as our baby found it too cold for her so wouldn't go in any higher than her ankles. The entertainment was your standard stuff with water polo, bingo, table tennis tournaments and table football tournaments being offered. There was also a kids club which helped keep out 4 year old entertained. The entertainers were very lively and friendly and obviously loved their jobs!

Rooms - We had a 1 bedroom suite on the 9th floor which was huge and more than adequate for our holiday.. This hotel is an all inclusive hotel but was self catering once upon a time so our suite had a good size kitchen as well as a massive bedroom, living are, bathroom and fantastic balcony with a beautiful ocean view. All 3 of the rooms we had as a family were of a very high standard and very clean with the cleaners doing a great job daily. There is also a free soft drink mini bar in each room which was ok but not heavily stocked which was a shame especially as we had to retire to our room earlier than the rest of the family with having young children and you're not allowed to take drinks back to your room from the bars.

Staff - We only stayed for a week but we received amazing customer service in all areas of the hotel. The reception staff went above and beyond to help my sister's family hire a car at late notice, the waiting on and bar staff spoke amazing English and really made a fuss and the cleaners were very friendly and flexible as on a couple of occasions I was back in the room while our baby had a nap so the cleaners returned later to make the beds etc.

Overall - We all had a fabulous holiday. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would definitely return here without a second thought. I would have rated it as excellent if only they had turned their A/C up a bit in the communal areas as this did sometime make out meal times uncomfortable but it wouldn't put us off from going there again!

We spent a very happy week at this hotel in June. We would very happily stayed another week if circumstances had allowed.
We had a very comfortable room with a balcony and side sea view. The chambermaids kept our room in a spotless condition.
We had an all inclusive holiday but were very impressed with the standard of the food in the self service restaurant. Charming staff were always on hand to make sure that we had enough wine!
Drinks were available at several bars. Waiters even visited us when we were sitting on our sun loungers and asked if they could bring us any refreshments. The staff were pleasant and efficient at every level.
There are beautiful flowers everywhere and you can take a very pleasant walk along the promenade outside the hotel. It is very easy to catch a bus to Funchal if you wish for a change of scenery.
My only disappointment was that the coastline is very rocky and I did not feel able to climb down to take a dip in the beautiful blue sea ( I do have a walking disability) The locals did not appear to have any worries about diving among the rocks!
I can thoroughly recommend a stay at this outstanding and friendly hotel.
