“Honeymoon, Amazing Hotel,”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2011

We went to the Porto Mare for our Honeymoon, we arrived on the 13/06/11, staying for one week, coach transfer was quite long, but Madeira is such a beautiful place we enjoyed the journey as the views are breathtaking, hotel was nearly the last drop off,

On arrival we were given our room key, and plenty of information from the Reception lady, who was very attentive, congratulated us, as we were on Honeymoon, (when we booked hol told Direct Hols this) , check in was very quick, when we got into our room, we had a bottle of Champagne, fresh flowers and our room decorated with petals over the bed and in the bathroom, lovely touches just made it so special for us, the rooms are very big with a superking bed and flatscreen TV, plenty of storage for clothes and large dressing table, rooms are decorated to a high standard with nice lamps and soft furnishings, fridge, and tea/coffee facilities, safe, which you pay for, (cant remember how much) was reasonable. Thomas Cook rep was fab!

We stayed on Bed and Breakfast, and the Breakfast is very good, staff are great and breakfast area you can sit inside or out, great relaxing atmosphere, very clean and food is fresh,

We dined in the Med restaurant, and the food was amazing, we went on the Wed night which is Meat lover night, and wow, the food and service first class, decor, ambiance everything you could want for a Romantic meal, the hotel bar is very expensive, as is the pool bar we got two coffees very very small cups at 6.80 euro for 2! the coctails are good quality but expensive also.

We went to the hotel spa and enjoyed a back massage and a foot massage, the staff are very polite and attentive, lovely relaxing area for you to sit in after your treatment with complimentary herbal tea, beautiful surroundings in here to,

The pool areas are beautiful with plant and trees everywhere, very clean and pools are good temperature, we loved the Jacuzzi, there is an indoor pool as well, and a gym which has everything you want as well, hotel is spotless, maids are very good, clean towels each day, pool towels as well, room cleaned every day,

You have to go on the Cable cars, hotel bus is free, takes you down to the harbour, cable cars go right into the mountains amazing views, 15 euro each return, also go to Nuns Valley, sights are out of this world! Maderia is a beautiful place but very expensive to eat out and drink, so take plenty of cash with you,

All in all, if you are looking for a relaxing hol this is the place to go!!

This hotel gets plenty of plaudits which are richly deserved. However, these comments need to be put into the context of the hotels situation in Funchal which could affect people's decisions. The hotel is well out of the centre of Funchal in an area called the "hotel zone". It is a massive development of mainly high rise hotels which have all the trappings of restaurants, excursion firms and taxi ranks. To venture outside the beautiful confines of the hotel is to run the gauntlet of touts for all of these. At first you don't mind, but after a week of it we were looking at ways of eating with least resistance. The hotel was an option but a lot more expensive one.
I know the hotel can do nothing about what goes on outside its gates but it is the environment of your holiday and affects the great atmosphere that you otherwise get in less sophisticated holiday resorts.

Just returned from one weeks stay, only fault was that it wasnt longer! One of the best hotels we have stayed at, with no faults at all. Looked around a few other hotels and the Porto Mare definitely looked the best. Grounds of hotel are idyllic with plenty of sunbeds and parasols for everyone, but not always around the pool. An even mixture of English/German/French which gave it a good atmosphere for us. Extremely clean throughout, and all professional pleasant staff, from cleaners to management. Rooms are very large and spacious, one was overlooking garden with sea view, and other room was indentical on opposite side of corridor overlooking another hotel but with sea & lido views - both excellent, but for me sitting on balcony looking down at the gardens with the sea as a backdrop was beautiful. Atlantica Restaurant buffet breakfast and evening meal was exceptional value as a HB booking before arrival, and was of a very high standard which changed each evening. All dishes were always topped up adequately whatever time you arrived. Having meals on the outside terrace overlooking the pool was really lovely - what a treat to eat meals outside in the warmth watching the palm trees sway - but many guests sat inside in the large restaurant. One large still water bottle, two soft drinks, one 1ltr carafe wine/sangreia, 2 coffees were 25euros per night - not too bad for hotel drinks/prices we thought. Most guests including ourselves bought drinks from local Spar opposite hotel, to drink on their balconies. There is large FOC fridge in each room adequately sized for a weeks supply of drinks. Happy Hour 50% off on terrace at 5.30-6.30 was not great, not all drinks were included upon ordering and the couple of cocktails on offer each evening were served up in smaller glasses than usual, also service quite slow. Evening entertainment is not great, era 1970's, but called in several other hotels and theirs were worse! Nothing to do in evenings at all once you have eaten. Lovely promenade 30min level walk from outside hotel continuing along Lido area with constant sea views - nice for an evening stroll to burn some calories up! The walk into Funchal is an unpleasant main road 40 min walk. Many cafes/restaurants/hotels but busy with traffic. Curtesy bus available but have to pre-book. As a family to get the real appeal of Madeira we thought car hire was a must - best pre-book on internet for car hire was - Rodavante - through Economy Car Hire - £126.00 for 7 days. Interestingly out of 4 car hire offices in airport they were the only company with a queue of customers, the others sat empty. They were professional, reliable and had other offices around including near hotel. But at that price, it made no sense to pay for taxi transfers of min.35 euros each way plus mid week getting around for 4 of us. Madeira is literally covered in kilometre after kilometre of tunnels, which are tedious and dark, missing most of the scenery around you, but its a quick safe route and a must for the tourist buses and coaches. With a safe and confident driver take all the small slower roads with tight bends and sheer drops but wonderful views! The islands scenery up in the hills and mountains are spectacular and breathtaking, but not great around the coastal edges - no pretty villages to spend the day walking around. When travelling around the island there are no traditional houses or architecture left to see apart from the odd chapel. Old Funchal Town is lovely with traditional old buildings and cobbled streets, but basically the rest of Funchal is densely built upon and populated. The promenade is best to see at night as in the light of the day it is disappointing and in disrepair. It sits on a very busy main road and has a couple of shabby bars on run down boats. Opposite they have let MacDonalds and Pizza Hut sit in prominent positions ruining any traditional atmosphere. Directly on the promenade running along the sea is heaps of rubble and soil just left there. Further along the harbour going out of Funchal towards the hotels, has all been boarded up. They run for a long distance making it a dismal walk as you cant see over them into the harbour, making it feel like a building site. But the gorgeous free parks in and around Funchal are the saving grace and are lovely to walk through. The rest of the island is literally covered in plants and flowers that cover every roadside and driving through the laurel forest is beautiful and serene. Go to the highest point on the island and look down upon this incredible green lush island. Drive through or walk the valleys which gush with water and see the waterfalls rush off the cliffs. The Levada walks are obviously fantastic and are probably what Madeira is all about, but most are a little too strenuous for the average family. Take the Balcoes Levada Walk for a level 40min easy walk, which gives you an incredible view at the end. A beautiful island with temperate weather and excellent hotels for a laid back holiday, but if you want specific things to do or see this is not the island for you. We are glad we went though and even our two teenage lads were amazed at the volcanic islands scenery. Probably wouldn't go back as we have covered it all in 7 days and there is plenty of other islands to see! Happy holidays!!

Room Tip: Upper floor, garden and sea view room.

to be honest he best hotel we have stayed in for years. the staff were excellant as was our room. I think we were lucky as we had a room on the 2nd floor ( same lelvel as reception) those on the lower floors may well be a bit dark due to the gardenshowever. the gardens are wonderful and we thought better than the botanical gardens in funchal. their was a god choice in thr buffet breakfasts and dinners although the dinners were a bit pricey at 25euro

Room Tip: 2nd floor +

We have an appartment for a deal 10 year deal at the Residence, which share the hotel facilities. We have been a member for 4 years and have 6 years to run. We really enjoy our visits looking forward to return each year. The transfer day is Monday in common with most ther UK travellers so flights are a little expensive but some decent deals can be found. The attached restaurants offer good service and very tasty and varied menues. The gardens are truely superb and compete with most dedicated gardens open to the public. The pool compexes offer a variety of out and indoor facilities with whirl pools etc. Throw in crazy golf, putting, table tennis, pool, a gymn, courtesy bus to town and alternatively a range of good local resaurants, what could be better. Enjoy

We can’t really say anything negative about this hotel at all. So much better than we even dreamed of. All of the staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. We had maid service every day, was only expecting it 3 times in the week. The room was brilliant, had a huge bed, safe (10 Euros for the week) and a mini bar. The bathroom was a good size with both bath and shower. We even had bath robes and towels for the pool supplied! The whole apartment was spotless and a lovely decor. The decor throughout the hotel was fantastic, loads of marble which finished it off brilliantly and everywhere was always extremely clean. The onsite facilities were both comprehensive and easy to access and the fact you could use anything in the adjoining sister hotel "the Eden Mar" made it even better. With a choice of 5 pools, two of which had hot tubs and loads of sun beds available you never had to worry about rushing down for a swim or sunbathe or saving a sun bed. It was great having the spa, steam room and sauna on site although the spa treatments were maybe a little on the pricey side for some people? You also cannot go from pool to steam room/sauna and back to pool without going through the spa reception. Amongst other things there was a Gym, Tennis courts, patio Chess and Mini Golf available. I did think it was a bit cheeky asking for 2 Euros each to play the mini golf which was a little tatty in places. The restaurants (4 of them) were immaculate and the food was fantastic. A different theme every day and so much choice, at breakfast you even got a free glass of bubbly if you wanted it! If I was being picky the only downsides in the restaurants at all were that you had to pay extra for a tea or coffee, in fact any drink, including water at your evening meal. The evening entertainment was a little samey with the same duo in one of the bars every night but there were other things going on around the hotel as well.
Although the hotel was about 25-30 mins walk from town there was a courtesy bus service and the public bus service was regular and very cheap, make sure you purchase a Giro card from Joes nearby, buses are then only 1 Euro a trip no matter how far you go.

Room Tip: Would recommend Garden View Room as views are varied and excellent

We spent two weeks at the Porto Mare at the beginning of June and had a fantastic holiday. Our room was spacious enough, with chairs and a table inside as well as ones on the balcony. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful.

We had a few days of unusually hot weather (for Madeira anyway) which meant the pool got very busy on those days, the sun loungers around the pool filled up pretty quickly but there were always loads more in the garden areas to use.

Breakfast was good, with a large selection of fresh fruit, hot food, meats, cheeses, breads etc. We ate at the pool snack bar a few times which was nice. We found the hotel prices a little expensive compared to the surrounding bars/snack bars/restaurants, but then, aren't all hotels like that? You do get a 'prestige card' at the end of your stay which gives you 10% of food and drinks if you go to a Portobay hotel again.

We stayed bed and breakfast and didn't eat at the hotel restaurants in the evenings, You can pay to go to the hotel restaurant (25 Euros p/p) and there were discounts if you pre-booked 3 or 5 nights (23/21 Euros). We found lots of really nice restaurants in the area which is why we never ate at the hotel. In particular la tricolor, te oriental and o'chef steak house were really good.

There are plenty of shops around the hotel, with a supermarket at the back of the hotel and another one on the main road and left a bit. There are lots of places where you can book excursions too. Funchal was a good 20-30 mins walk away and there was a courtesy bus provided by the hotel several times a day if you didn't fancy walking. There was free wifi in reception and the bar if you want to keep up to date with your emails

All in all, we had a great holiday and have no real complaints. I'm pretty sure we will be returning to the Porto Mare in the near future.

Thank you for a “fantastic” comment posted on TripAdvisor about Porto Mare holidays.

I am really glad to know that you are already thinking about a future stay.
You have mentioned the prestige card and some of the benefices for the users, so on the 6th visit you will have 15% discount instead of 10% and therefore the prices will be a bit more favorable for you!
Please understand the behind the Vila Porto Mare complex with five pools, 14.000sq. meters of garden, 5 bars & 4 restaurants with entertainment and so on, there is a structure that needs to be maintained, and the prices cannot be comparable with outside and individual bars &restaurants that in generally are run on a family bases that requires less financial support.

Hope to welcome you in a future visit,

With warm regards,

Muito Obrigado
