“Fabulous Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2014

Superb hotel complex, beautiful gardens, sun beds plentiful and not just crammed around the pool. We stayed b&q plenty of eating places with lots of variety. Eat at the steak and surf, don't be put off by the view over the supermarket car park. Food fabulous. Nice walk along the promenade takes about 45 mins. We will be back

Room Tip: corner superior rooms, massive, cost more but well worth it.

We stayed here for two weeks, one of those weeks was Madeira Wine week and the hotel had wine tasting events throughout the week for it's guests. The complementary coach (collecting guests from all the Porta Bay hotels in Funchal) was a nice touch.

The hotel is about 20-25 minutes walk from the centre of Funchal, it hosts some of the best gardens we have ever experienced at a hotel (has it's own sunken tropical garden) which are very well looked after. It shares it's facilities with it's sister hotel the Eden Mare next door and between them they offer the guests a choice of two indoor pools, two spa baths (1 indoor and 1 outdoor) and two outdoor pools. There are several bars throughout offering a variety of entertainment (different live music each evening). We found the price of drinks very reasonable for a 4 star hotel.

We ate at two of the restaurants (see separate review for the Med Restaurant). We found the buffet food rather on the bland side, but a huge variety of choice and different themes each evening. Fabulous outdoor seating area overlooking the pools and gardens (there was indoor seating too). Service was very hit and miss for breakfast sitting, dependant on whether the restaurant manager was there or not.

The hotel has a policy of not letting people reserve pool side loungers, but this is not enforced - a pity as loungers were seen to be reserved before breakfast and not used until after lunch in some cases. A shame there are no parasols allowed in the lawned area overlooking the sea as this meant the area was mainly left unused during our stay.

Rooms were very spacious with a well equipped bathroom. Nice touch with the bowl of fruit and bottle of wine on arrival. Always lots of fruit in the restaurant at breakfast meant we could keep our bowl stocked up. Great to have bathrobes provided and airer on the balcony in order to dry your bathing costumes. Patio doors were good at keeping any noise from bars from the room.

At weekends there were wedding parties at the hotel. We found that parts of the garden were shut off for them. Also evening wedding receptions could be loud and go on very late.

We would recommend this hotel to family and friends and will be using again when we return to Madeira.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have good views over the beautiful gardens.

This was my 2nd time in three months. Normally four of us travel together every September but since I had time off work I felt safe enough to travel to Madeira on my own.
I cannot fault anything in this hotel the staff always remember you including the local restaurants.
My friend and I are trying out the Porto Bay Falesia in April and we cant wait to try this Hotel as we wouldn't go anywhere else unless its a Porto Bay Hotel.
I would like to say a big Thank you to Neide Freitas as she always looks after us during our stay.
Looking forward to our 5th stay at the Porto Bay September 2014.

This is a wonderful hotel with great staff and exceptionally clean, both private and public areas.

It was VERY quiet when we stayed (late Feb) with a more mature age of guest. However, as we were after a quiet, relaxing break that suited us perfectly.

This is a first class hotel. All facilities are of the highest standard and makes for a very relaxed stay. We would certainly book here with confidence. We will be going back to this hotel next time we go to Madeira.
We have stayed in Funchal several times and this was the best so far. We had a sea view on the fourth floor which was excellent. Lot's of local eateries to explore so B&B worked well for us.
Looking forward to returning hopefully next year.

Room Tip: Higher up rooms give the best views over the gardens and out to sea.

This hotel is very clean and comfortable with excellent staff and immaculately maintained gardens. Our 'Sea view' room was a view of a car park and a high-rise building. The description was technically correct as if we leaned out over the balcony and peered sharply to our left, we could see a piece of sea. After a 'discussion' with the front desk, we were moved to a room with a proper sea view without fuss. We did actually have a lovely stay but, oh dear, the experience was spoiled by the petty extra charges!
The customers using this hotel seemed to be entirely respectable reasonably affluent people and it is with this type of people that a bit of applied human psychology would not come amiss! Guests here seem happy to pay around 80 euro for a nice dinner but that does not mean that they are happy to pay 30 euro(20 refundable) to use the room safe or an extortionate 25 euro for room wi-fi! Ok, there is free wi-fi in the lobby but that is not the point, most 4 star hotels nowadays have complimentary wi-fi and would not even think of charging for guests to use the room safe! There is a hire charge to use the tennis court, fair enough, but an additional charge to hire two racquets and a ball is NOT fair enough! Crazy golf... chargeable, table tennis.... chargeable... et al!
What may seem great beancounting ideas for adding margin is bad customer psychology as customers who are hit with numerous petty charges will be irritated and as is the way of human nature, are likely to spend less on site!

It is not easy to run a hotel of this size, the management have got all of the big and important detail correct, it is a shame that the overall effect is spoiled by these additional charging issues which add little to the bottom line but have a negative effect on customer satisfaction thereby adversely impacting the bottom line.

Room Tip: If you have booked a room with a sea view, make sure you are not fobbed off with a room with a '...

This is a very nice hotel located at Funchal's Lido quarter. It has a great garden, outdoor (and indoor) pools and nice terrace for breakfast and dinner.
The overall atmosphere in the hotel was very relaxed, which may have been due to a quite high average age of the guests.
We booked a seaview room and first got a room on the west side of the hotel with a balcony opening to a noisy street. After complaining about the noise at the front desk, the lady at the reception explained that the later you book (admitted, we booked just 10 days in advance) the "worse" your room will be (why does a hotel have "bad" rooms?) and that the hotel was fully booked, but gave us another room facing the garden, anyway.
This room was nearly twice as big as the first room, wow. The catch was, that it was located right above one of the restaurants and that it was very noisy during breakfast (no long sleep :) and dinner times (no early sleep as well :). Since we only realized that during the first night, another complaint was useless since there were no other free rooms.
Apart from that (I file it under poor sleep quality), the service was exceptional and the staff in the restaurants was very friendly.
The food was very good, too. Dinner buffets changed each night with a different theme.
The position of the hotel is quite exceptional, not too far from the center, but far enough to be able to have a quiet walk in the evening. The center of Funchal was about a 30 min. walk away. Public busses, the Yellow and Red busses of different tourist organizations stopped right in front of the hotel and a taxi stop which always had taxis waiting is about 50 m from the hotel entrance.
