“Christmas in Madeira”
Reviewed 11 January 2009

My husband and I stayed at the Porto Mare for a week over Christmas. Having never been away for Christmas we were uncertain what to expect -the hotel was excellent it was even better than we had hoped! We had a spacious room with a view of the pool, gardens and the sea from the balcony. Rooms were kept spotless and were even cleaned on Christms day.
The buffet breakfasts were excellent - very bad for the diet -although lots of fruit available alongside English and continental breakfasts we even got a good cup of tea!
We ate at the hotel restaurant twice, Christmas eve gala dinner and Christmas day -again excellent with a vast variety of food and wine included on Christmas eve!
Gardens were beautiful, well cared for and the plants labelled which was helpful. There was even a small aviary in the grounds!
Main outdoor pool was chilly however the hotel did not lack pools, the indoor/outdoor pool was great as was the jacuzzi and they never got crowded. I even attended an aqua aerobics session which was good fun.
The hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas and as for Funchal itself - the lights were breathtaking and the other decorations a delight.
My only negative point was we had a little more rain than expected but that was unfortunate and obviously not the fault of the hotel or resort!
Highly recommended!

Just back from a week in Porto Mare hotel funchal madeira.
I cannot say enough about the hotel Porto mare - it lived up to our expectations, The room, public areas, and facilities are superb. The staff very helpful. We ate in two of the four restuaruants - Il Basilico and The Med - both were excellent. Madeira is a wonderful place to visit - very relaxed and the people are very friendly in shops, etc. We took a Strawberry World bus tour of the west of the Island - a great tour and good value. The calble car trip to Monte and the Botanical gardens is also great fun. Cannot wait to returnl.

The festive season was in full swing when we arrived on December 29th. The Hotel was very attractively decorated in the spirit of Christmas in Madeira.

We particularly liked the sparkly baubles on the staircase LOL

The hotel enjoys a beautiful setting on the coast and is linked to a series of other partner hotels. As a guest, you can use the facilities of the other hotels which was great as we were only here for 6 nights. We had already been in Madeira for 3 weeks having decided to vacation here for a month.

The tropical gardens are rich in variety and colour and are immaculately maintained. Indeed the entire setting is a miniature paradise. Restaurants and entertainment were of the quality you would expect from a four star hotel.

On the downside, the swimming pools were absolutely freezing, but fortunately there were indoor pools which were far more agreeable, including hot tubs which we took advantage of.

The hotel is located within a few yards of the busy Monumental Lido with an excellent choice of restaurants. This is a good base for exploring the Island with frequent bus servies into Funchal Centre.

As a tip for first time visitors, use the yellow bus services. Get on the bus and you will be given a rechargeable ticket for 2 euros. You can then charge up the ticket in many of the local shops where you see the red payshop sign. Each journey will then cost you 85 cents (about 84p). We just got on and got off and discovered all sorts of places. A visit to Pico de Barcelos is a must!

Have a great time all - By the way the New Year fireworks were incredible

Stayed at the Porto Mare over Chrismas 2008. A lovely looking hotel with a very seasonal atmosphere. The staff very friendly and helpful. The view from the balcony of the Atlantic was superb with the splendid gardens a real treat for the eyes.

The hotel and island definately caters for the older visitor I am in my fifties but still feel young at heart therefore the lack of evening entertainment locally was a disappointment, plenty of restaurants and eating places but no music both live or taped to be had. A bar with a jazz player or acoustic guitarist would have been nice, sadly once your evening meal was over it was back to the hotel room or bar which did feature some opera music (not everyones taste).

I feel the resort needs to address this as I was told it is the same in the summer.

  • Liked — very modern hotel with great views of the sea
  • Disliked — set very tightly packed in amongst other hotels and the resort

Our second stay at the Porto Mare. Still top class and we cannot understand why it is not 5 star rated. It compares with any 5 star we have ever stayed at - in fact better than some!
I agree with an earlier reviewer that being a prestige club member brings even more advantages - free drink, prestige party ( more free drinks!) and 10% off bar and restaurant bills. Staff are brilliant - the customer satisfaction survey invites you to name someone who gave outstanding service - impossible - they are all "going that extra mile."
Will definitely return before long!

My husband and I have just returned from the Porto Mare Hotel, Madeira and we can't praise it highly enough. ALL the staff, from the gardeners to the manager were hard working, friendly, well dressed, courteous and always had a smile on their faces. We have travelled extensively, all over the world, and this is definitely the best hotel we've ever stayed in. The amenities are superb, the location well within walking distance of Funchal - we are in our late 60's but could easily manage the walk. The food was excellent with a very varied choice, the rooms were spacious and kept clean and tidy by the maids and the balcony we had was almost big enough to accommodate our home in UK!!! I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone 'over a certain age' and we will definitely be booking again next year. Oh yes, and the weather was wonderful - even came back with a sun tan much to the envy of our freiends and family in UK!! GO TO THIS HOTEL, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

Everything about this hotel was just perfect. Although the hotel was full during our stay it never seemed crowded. Some 4* hotels can be stuffy, but the Porto Mare has a very relaxed feel to it. There are lots of restaurants to choose from, but we usually aren't keen on hotel food and prefer to go out to eat. Then one night, when we were tired after Levada walking in the mountains, we decided to have room service. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. So on our last night we ate at the Italian restaurant in 'The Residence' part of the hotel. Again, the food was superb. Our only regret is not having tried the other restaurants. Although we may not return to Madeira, we will definately stay at another Porto Bay hotel. They have just opened a new one in the Algarve and i can't wait to try it.
