“Beautiful hotel and grounds - good location if you are fairly active”
Reviewed 6 July 2009

This is a beautiful hotel in the Lido area - near lots of restaurants two very good Italian restaurants nearby. If you want the authentic Portuguese experience then it is pleasant to walk or take a bus into the old town which is very pretty. It is a longish walk to the old town and quite a steep hill with little tiles which are slippy when wet. (The walk is quite manageable if you are active but I would be concerned for someone who was less fit or had mobility issues such as a bad hip. I say this as Madeira seems to attract older visitors.) The hotel room was huge we paid more for a sea view - and like the Forth bridge they were always decorating. The grounds were amazing - all the plants were labelled. There were several large pools (I thought a little chilly for March) and a treatment spa. The breakfast was lovely - champagne every day and lovely Portuguese custard pastries which you can only get there or in an exclusive London patisserie (I googled this after the trip!) There was of course all the usual delightful buffet food from crepes to waffles, cereal and cooked breakfast. The staff were charming. We didnt eat there at night although there were several restaurants. There was a time share offer to view a timeshare (it is very prevalent there) someone on our flight said the Porto Mare timeshare experience was not pushy they had a free lunch and a lovely book about Madeira. However I did not want to spend two hours on something I knew I would not want to buy. Madeira is beautiful lots to do and see but the weather has always been a little variable (ie rainy) on my three trips there (admittedly always around the first quarter of the year.) The hotel is beautiful appointed and spacious. The lobby has the most incredible flowers as you might expect in such a botanical paradise. The evening entertainment is fairly dull and inofensive (a couple with a hammond organ) but we tended to eat out then go to bed.

Stayed at this hotel in June the room was large and had a garden view this may not be to everyones taste as it had no seaview but having lived in a coastal town its not a novelty to look at the sea for me.We loved this room as it had a large terrace area and the lush gardens were directly outside again this may not suit sunworshipers as plants and trees gave shade to the terrace but we loved the view and felt it gave a certain amount of privacy. There was a gate at the end of the terrace and you could go to the large outside pool and back wthout going through the hotel. The vast majority of the rooms probably have a sea view in this hotel. The swimming pools were lovely the larger indoor one is beautiful as are the grounds. The hotel was spotless and the staff friendly and helpful.Unable to comment on meals as we ate out but breakfast was great. The climate was perfect for us not too hot so walking was comfortable and we did a two hour levada walk with Madeira explorers Antonio was our guide who was very professional and informative the scenery was great and the locals friendly considering we were observing some of them at work.Eating out was varied as were the prices we liked casa italia good pasta at reasonable prices ,for fine dining though more pricey Quinta Palmeira provided a memorable evening and in the old town we really enjoyed Olives which had interesting choices and had vegetarian options as did the Quinta Palmeira. There is also a little fresh fruit and bakers shop next to casa Italia which sold good sandwiches, cakes and takeaway snacks.Madeira is a beautiful island which we would visit again and would certainly go back to the Porto Mare which is a credit to the manager and all the hard working staff.

There are so many travellers' reviews on Porto Mare Hotel that this additional one can be kept short. This hotel fully deserves its four stars: The rooms are spacious, nicely decorated and equipped with perfect king-size beds as well as large screen TV sets. Everything is clean and in perfect state. The pool is big in comparison with other hotels of the same size and the deck-chairs are spread over such an extended garden and pool area that one does not at all feel like a sardine in a tin.
At least the sea-side rooms are quiet after midnight when the hotel bars close, except for a continuous monotonous noise which seems to originate from the air conditioning even when it is switched off in the room. But perhaps this noise is only audible in some of the rooms. At any rate, it is not really disturbing and one gets used to it.
The warm and cold buffet breakfast offers a very wide choice. The option to take the breakfast out in the open is definitely a strong point of this hotel. However, the availability of a larger number of different tees would be desirable and the quality of the coffee also leaves room for improvement. Both the coffee and the water for tea come in Thermos flasks and are not really hot. But these minor issues seem to be the only weaknesses of Porto Mare Hotel. The staff, on the other hand, is very attentive and provides excellent service.
If somebody wants to go bathing in the sea regularly Porto Mare Hotel is not a good choice. But probably for such a person the whole island of Madeira is not the right place to go. However, to everybody else Porto Mare Hotel can be recommended whole-heartedly.

Great value for money. excellent hotel, good location, has lots of beautiful gardens, a free shuttle bus into the city centre. the staff was excellent, very helpful and gracious. had an amazing stay, would go back. just make sure to book your shuttle buses early because they get full fast. their buffet breakfast is decent but their pasteries are great.

My husband and I had booked a one week stay at Eden Mar.
When we arrived, the hotel was full and we had to move to the adjacent but superior Porto Mare, plus we received vouchers for 4 free meals at one of the hotel restaurants.
Our room was the biggest we ever had in our life, and included a large balcony offering a stunning panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean.
Food, though buffets, was nor repetitive but was just of enormous amounts and very delicious.
The hotel is an enchanting place with several gardens, pools, bars, restaurants, located in the "Lido" complex of Funchal, i.e. there's a supermarket and lots of shops and restaurants around.
To visit Funchal, we used the hotel shuttle (free of charge).
The other days, we explored this island, which actually is a tiny paradise, with lovely landscapes (though no beaches).
Overall, it was the best vacations and the most romantic and relaxing experience we ever had in our life.

Aside from the resident Duo Harmonia (who have been playing the same caberet act of dodgy songs on synthizer for the past 2 years at least) there is nothing that anyone can say to make this place better.

Gardens are very well maintained. the place is spotless. Rooms are good size, clean, comfortable, quiet and welcoming. Indoor pools are huge and warm. Jacuzzi was nice too.

Good variety of bars - bar in Eden Mar (which is connected to Porto Mare) had a big screen for the footy too!

Staff are great, there is nothing they wont do for you. Free internet and Wi-fi in lobby and you can get broadband in your room too (tho there is a small charge of 10e)

Breakfast is yum, yum, yum! Amazing selection (hot, cold, fried, fresh, whatever you want). Tho they seem to be all out of Earl Grey tea which was a bit disappointing - but the supermarket across the street had some so we just brought our own down for breakfast. My partner is Coeliac and i was almost tempted to say I too was Coeliac as the Gluten Free bread were very tasty. These gluten free buns were on display, so you didnt have the embarassment (and language confusion) of requesting this.
We didnt sample the evening dinners, but we were told that they always have a gluten free dish available.
The Room Service is very resonably priced and also did Gluten free sandwiches for my partner. We provided the bread, but they did Ham and Cheese Toastie for the same price as the Gluten Filled ones - which was a pleasant change from some other hotels.

This is one of the best hotels in Madeira - Defo worth a visit.

And besides Duo Harmonia arent THAT bad, some guests seem to love them, but for me it was nice to just grab a drink in the bar and sit in the wonderful lounge area just in front of the bar.
