This is a beautiful hotel in the Lido area - near lots of restaurants two very good Italian restaurants nearby. If you want the authentic Portuguese experience then it is pleasant to walk or take a bus into the old town which is very pretty. It is a longish walk to the old town and quite a steep hill with little tiles which are slippy when wet. (The walk is quite manageable if you are active but I would be concerned for someone who was less fit or had mobility issues such as a bad hip. I say this as Madeira seems to attract older visitors.) The hotel room was huge we paid more for a sea view - and like the Forth bridge they were always decorating. The grounds were amazing - all the plants were labelled. There were several large pools (I thought a little chilly for March) and a treatment spa. The breakfast was lovely - champagne every day and lovely Portuguese custard pastries which you can only get there or in an exclusive London patisserie (I googled this after the trip!) There was of course all the usual delightful buffet food from crepes to waffles, cereal and cooked breakfast. The staff were charming. We didnt eat there at night although there were several restaurants. There was a time share offer to view a timeshare (it is very prevalent there) someone on our flight said the Porto Mare timeshare experience was not pushy they had a free lunch and a lovely book about Madeira. However I did not want to spend two hours on something I knew I would not want to buy. Madeira is beautiful lots to do and see but the weather has always been a little variable (ie rainy) on my three trips there (admittedly always around the first quarter of the year.) The hotel is beautiful appointed and spacious. The lobby has the most incredible flowers as you might expect in such a botanical paradise. The evening entertainment is fairly dull and inofensive (a couple with a hammond organ) but we tended to eat out then go to bed.
