Good room with cooking plate and close by supermarket - nice if you don't want to go for hotel food all the time. Excellent pool area and gym. Nice beach walk.

Unfortunately the disapointment started having entered our rooms to find our "Sea View" room was a slight exageration. If you look on the hotels website "Sea View" states the following:

SEA VIEW
Relax while gazing out over the ocean and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Madeira sea...

Area: 40m2 (9m2 veranda) • bedroom with en suite bathroom • veranda with a view over the sea, pool and the resort gardens

Our view, and our friends in the joining room, had a view of the neighbouring hotel and the road in between, which on a daily basis had the hotels large courtesy bus parked with its engine running constantly. Not particularly tranquil or beautiful!

We addressed the issue with Reception only to be told we had booked a "Garden" room and this was an upgrade. We provided evidence that this was not the case and were advised the other rooms were full and they could only move us when two "Sea View" rooms became available. Given the headache of unpacking, packing and a further unpack we decided to stay in the rooms provided and complain to the travel agent. When we checked out we asked for evidence of the error (being the Garden room) we were told we had booked "Sea View" rooms. You can imagine our frustration. No appology was made by the hotel or compensation made for their error.

Moving on, the facilities are ok, but would have expected a higher standard. Examples:
Pool loungers cheap and uncomfortable, pool towels are worn and tiny and you only get one! You have to return it daily to the Spa to get a fresh one!
Spa never seems to have availability
Atlantic Bar has the slowest service and run out of the basics! No limes one day, so no mojitos! You only get nibbles if you ask and they seem to water down the happy hour cocktails!

If you are the type of person irritated by those holiday makers who get up at the crack of dawn to claim their lounger by the pool leaving magazines on each one until later in the day when they finally return to the hotel, then this is certainly not the hotel for you!

The hotel is pleasant enough, breakfast is good, and the rooms are a decent size, but all in all we thought it was an average place to stay and we didn't feel the hotel made any effort to correct their booking error. We certainly will not be returning there or recommending it to friends.

Stayed previously here in ‘The Residence’ in 2006. This time booked 2 Superior Sea View Rooms through Thomas Cook, with a request for the rooms to be in close proximity of each other.
Check-in was an efficient process and we were provided with 2 Rooms next to one another on the 2nd Floor. Further contact with Reception staff during our 7day stay was helpful, pleasant, and courteous.
Both rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. The balconies however were quite small. The shower is over the bath and for this standard of hotel could certainly do with being upgraded. Housekeeping standards were good, and maintenance requests were dealt with promptly, e.g. we quickly noticed that the air con system, although running was making little difference in bringing down the room temperature. The following morning I left a notification on our door at approx 10.00 hrs and when we returned to the room at 14.00 hrs the matter had been attended to and the air con was operating effectively.
We were on a B&B basis and were well satisfied with the quality and choice for Breakfast, and with the friendly and helpful attitude of the staff in the Atlantida Rest. I agree with comments made by others that the system of Coffee flasks could be improved upon to deliver a fresher and more palatable alternative.
We used the Atlantida Rest for an Evening Meal on 2 occasions and were pleased with the quality and choice available from the Buffet, and the wine we were recommended by the waiter was decent and reasonably priced.
Very good-sized swimming pool, and a well equipped air-conditioned gym.
Used the Pool Bar for snacks and drinks, - good service, but they certainly charge heftily for bottled water.
Also used the Porto Fino Bar, and the service there was always very pleasant and friendly.
Overall, little to fault and much to commend.

This is a wonderful hotel, with excellent facilities in a great location. I would most definitely go back there and happily recommend it. The pools, jacuzzis and gym were excellent, and all maintained very well. We stayed B&B and the breakfast was lovely, with so much to choose from. The location in the 'tourist zone' is ideal, as it is a short walk/free bus from the hotel to central Funchal, but you can easily stay in the immediate area of the hotel, where there are shopping centres as well as many bars and restaurants within seconds. I really couldn't fault this place.

As a destination, Madeira has a reputation of being preferred by older British travellers. But as a 30 year old and a 25 year old, we found that there were lots of Europeans there of our age, and with families. Levada walks are good fun too. It is chav-free. If you want topless sunbathing, karaoke, bingo, egg & chips and Coronation Street, this is NOT for you! It is a chic and classy destination, but has enough to do that it is in no way boring. A wonderful holiday!
