Lovely swimming pools and delightful views from the balcony. Close to promenade and to Restaurant O'Barqueira - a brilliant sea food restaurant just round the corner. Also convenient for the Forum shopping centre with supermarket.

A little way from the centre of Funchal but courtesy bus service is reliable and free.

This time we shared a two bed room apartment with friends and it worked well.

Room Tip: Aim to get sea view apartment and avoid studios; Studio de luxe apartments are fine though.

We stayed in Pestana Grand for 4 nights in July 11. Loved the experience. Check in was fast, friendly and efficient. Room for 3 (2 doubles + extra bed) was large enough; comfortable beds and large bathroom. However the TV was an antique tube model but I don't care for TV on my vacation. Front desk was helpful in answering questions and handling requests.

Hotel facilities are beautiful. Large pool, 2 steam rooms, jacuzzi, fitness club. Very pretty and tasteful landscaping. There is also a free hourly shuttle to Funchal provided (otherwise it's a 40-45 min walk).

We had breakfast included; it was full hot and cold buffet with sparking wine every day. We didn't eat dinner there so can't comment on it.

Other points (not directly related to the hotel) that may be of interest to travelers are:

-- getting from the airport. We booked a private transfer with madeira-airport-transfers dot com. Driver was on time on arrival and departure and cost reasonable.Airport bus also stops near the hotel (get off at Forum Madeira stop and walk for 2 min from there)

-- location. Hotel is located near Forum Madeira, Lido Promenade and Playa Formosa (rocky beach). It's possible to swim in Lido pools (I think it was 4.5 euro entrance fee)

-- restaurants. Real Canoa is immediately on the right of the hotel. Quite popular at night (we ate there once). There are others adjacent next to it. Going left from the hotel is
seafood restaurant Marisqueira O Barqueiro which we liked. Forum Madeira has also some places to eat.

-- tours. Took full day "West Island" tour with "Pride of Madeira". Liked the tour and company. Tour was in 8 seat van (9 to 5). Saw Camara de Lobos, Cabo Girao, Ribiera Brava, Sao Vincente (village, not caves), Porto Moniz and all the gorgeous scenery in between.

-- bought 1 day bus pass in Funchal and visited places around Funchal (Monte, botanical gardens, etc). Good alternative for a pricey funicular.

This was our fourth visit to the Pestana Grand and it was almost perfect in every respect. We wanted to just relax and this is possibly at the Pestana. The staff, whether it be on the reception area, in the restaurants or in the bar areas are so helpful and courteous and nothing is too much trouble for them. The meals were all superb perhaps just a shame that you can only have one meal each week in the Italian or Moroccon restaurants. It was noticeable that the recession has hit the area, all much quieter than usual and certainly staff numbers appear to have been cut drastically but they all coped well and no doubt things will improve on Madeira as else where in due course. Our room was terrific and I suggest you ask for a sea view if possible, it makes such a difference. There were one or two minor defects within the room, i.e. blocked bathroom sink, but these were rectified immediately. I must not forget the cleaning staff, what a fantastic job they do and often without a mention - thankyou. God willing we will return for No.5 visit and I recommend the Pestana Grand to anyone wishing for a quiet and relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: Try to have a room with a balcony ovewrlooking the sea

We celebrated our 66th Wedding Anniversary in this wonderful hotel. The Service and comfort and the kindness of the staff wsas excellent . The food could not have been bettered. We loved it. We were updated to a side room overlooking the sea. The hotel had three restaurants Our bedroom was large and beautifully furnished. It was so quiet and peaceful. We hope sincerely that we will be back next year.

We have just returned from a lovely stay at Pestana Grand - the hotel is truly beautiful in a wonderful peaceful relaxing sea front setting. The rooms are beautiful having had a lot of tasteful consideration when being furnished. the rooms are as new except for the old fashioned tv (need plasmas!!) and the old fashioned small shower cubicle rather than the more modern easier to keep clean walk in showers. Perhaps in need of a little updating in those respects but other than that really lovely rooms warranting the 5 star service

The public reception rooms and gardens and pool area are all deserved too of the 5 star status - really stunning gardens and clean huge swimming pools designed again with flair! ... a touch on the cold side though,,, dont think they were heated and in colder months it would be a brave person to venture in the outdoor pools!

The indoor spa area could be lovely ...needs maintenance though - i have never swum in a pool with so many missing tiles. There was no mention of any maintenance but I would hope this is planned for the near future as it is spoiling a great facility especially for the winter months

The reception staff are all very professional and helpful .... going the extra mile

....however the same cannot be said for the restaurant and bar staff . We actually felt like we were an inconvenience to them being there!! The quality of the breakfast offering is of good quality... still lacking freshly squeezed orange and quality espresso coffee but that aside perfectly good quality. The restaurant has a lovely setting allowing for breakfast to be taken outside by the pool which again creates an "experience" to start the day .... or it could have been had it not been for the surly staff who really arent encouraged or train to treat customers in the way they should be doing. Tables were not cleaned and prepared and left for over 45 minutes with dirty dishes. When we asked for a table to be cleared and re-set for us were told very abrulty - "In a moment!!" This was not at peak time and they were not busy, the staff seemed preoccupied polishing the cutlery by the door rather than seeing that tables needing clearing and re-setting. There is a total lack of training in this area and a few smiles from the staff wouldnt go amiss! I found this strange having visited Madeira many times and always found the people very helpful professional and obliging... not sure if the staff are local but they certainly didnt come across as "happy in their work" and we honestly felt at times were a total incovenience being there!?

Same can be said of the bar staff. We often fancied having lunch at the pool bar but after our first abrupt experience we chose to walk out for our lunch each day which was a shame ... but we werent made to feel welcome. Our first experience ... and last was ordering a milkshake which was served warm. I mentioned this to the bar staff and she said they only had warm milk which I accepted but said I couldnt drink it like that and would prefer to order a cold drink.. She argued with me in front of other guests and staff that I had to pay for this warm milkshake that i had done no more than take a sip! Only at my absolute insistence I wasnt going to pay for it did she back down and eventually serve me a diet coke! We then felt very awkward sitting at this bar or visiting it again! I did mention this experience to the management as it really isnt good service and needs addressing - they took my complaint seriously and said it would be looked into offering us a complimentary late check out which was much appreciated..... they lost revenue though from us from further drinks and lunches at this bar!

I noticed another reviewer had mentioned service issues and the management had replied that this was being recitified - we visited over a month after this review and cannot see any evidence yet of this

Service aside this is a beautiful hotel and with those issues addressed we would love to visit again and hope to in the near future

Some other suggestions for further improvement if the group are interested that arent meant as a criticism but suggestions for further adding to the experience

free internet access for guests which in a 5 star hotel should be complimentary without having to get an access code for 30 minutes free in the lobby every day? It costs peanuts now to offer this service and in most top hotels it is now given free of charge

Freshly squeezed orange juice served at coffee

Good quality coffee brand - like Illy serving espresso capuccino and latte

Turn down service in the evening ... very surprised they didnt do this

complimentary water in the fridge - usually expected in 5 star hotels

Ice cream bar servicing quality ice cream sundaes with choice of ice creams

More restuarants in the hotel open each evening at more sensible prices to try to keep customers at the hotel rather than them venturing across the road or further afield for dinner

more choice of Tv channels with latest Plasma screens fitted in all rooms

Walk in showers in bathrooms even at the expense of the bath in some rooms when the rooms are next refurbished

board games available to borrow from reception of the library

DVD offerings for the room - either choice on the tv with new technology or borrowing dvds from dvd library in lobby

This hotel is in a superb setting away from the noise of the city and with the complimentary bus service which is excellent and runs throughout the day thought unfortunately stops in the evening which is a shame as it would be useful for dining opportunities in the old town which are superb . This hotel has a lot to offer its customers if only the service issues mentioned above could be addressed

Once the promenade directly behind the hotel between the hotel and the sea is further expanded the hotel should offer even more in terms of restauarants and cafe bars etc to walk to along the very relaxing promenade area

We enjoyed eating at Real Canoe opposite the hotel and a great fish restaurant to the other side of the hotel barquerio. We also loved eating in the old town at Restaurante do forte and estrella de mar

We stayed in this hotel for one week in October last year and can honestly say we would recommend it to anyone, and go back there any time we visit Madeira. Truly lovely. The only downer was the themed evening meals that are on during the week and which you have to book at the reception, They are a trifle pricey for the quality of the meal, which was nice but worked out 80 euros for two courses, and we don't particularly drink so it was the price of the meals. The hotel stay and service and the breakfasts were spectacular!
