“not 5 star food”
Reviewed 26 September 2011

just got back from a week at the pestana grand...lovely hotel as in very clean and pool area is fantastic as are the views...however ......we have stayed in 2 star hotels with better food. not much choice, two nights everyone complained as the food wasn't even warm never mind hot! 80% of the restraunt staff very unfriendly.
don't expect to sit outside at night and be asked if you want a drink,, they ignore you and the prices in the hotel are ridicules price.nothing to do at night and nowhere nearby to go.
the food really lets this place down and some of the staff need some customer service training
also our room over looked the road at the front and was very small compared to the photos on website. indoor pool was closed and couldnt be used, we were not informed of this, should have opened on the friday we left but it looked like a building site...wont be ready anytime soon.

Room Tip: pay lots of extra money i think

We stayed here for 7 nights on half board. When we checked in the person on reception welcomed us with a glass of Madeiran wine which was lovely. We had booked a side seaview room. The room was on the first floor (No. 1107). We had a great view of the pool area and sea. We had been told that the room was in the quiet part of the hotel and this was the case. We were near the end of the corridoor. The room was very spacious. It had a king bed and the bathroom had a walk-in shower as well as a shower in the bath. The floor of the bathroom was in black marble. The room itself had plenty of wardrobe space for hanging clothes as well as lots of shelves. The t.v. was a bit outdated but that didn't matter. Below the t.v. was a cupboard in which there was a small fridge and tea and coffee facilities. Also a good size desk to put any incidentals on. A lovely comfortable settee and armchair was in the room also. The patio doors led onto a spacious balcony which had a wicker table and two very comfortable chairs. It was lovely in the evening to sit on the balcony and take in the beautiful views.Forgot to mention that when we arrived the luggage was taken from us and delivered to the room extremely promptly. As we began to unpack the doorbell rang and a guy was standing there with a bottle of champagne in an ice-bucket with two champange flutes. We were there to celebrate our Ruby wedding anniversary. We thought this was a nice touch on the hotel's behalf. We found the food to be excellent. Plenty of variety at breakfast and also the evening buffets of which we had the full seven. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We spent a lot of time round the pool areas which we found to be very quiet. It was lovely, you could hear a pin drop! We used the courtesy bus into Funchal which is a very nice place with plenty of shops. We also found a sightseeing open top yellow bus which you can hop off and on. There are two lines, yellow line and blue line. The cost of this was 12 euros per person which lasted for two days. We used both lines on each day. This was the way we did our sightseeing. We did not do any tours as we really wanted to relax and soak up the atmosphere of everything.
We had booked Reids hotel for afternoon tea which was an experience. We had tea on the balcony overlooking beautiful gardens. This by the way was one of our anniversary presents bought by my parents who are 89 and 91 years of age! I don't think we would have paid 28 euros each for this. The hotel itself was what I call "a bit stiff". We did however visit the Cliff Bay hotel for lunch and twice in the evening for drinks. The hotel was beautiful, however it's more expensive than the Pestana Grand.
Just to sum everything up now. The holiday was bought for us by our children as an anniversary present. However, we would definately return to this hotel as we found everything perfect. I am a very picky person when going on holiday and I must say that I couldn't find anything to "moan about". If you are looking for a hotel in a very quiet area with beautiful views, then this is the perfect hotel.

If anyone wants any further information I will be happy to help.

The Pestana Grand is still a great place to stay arrival was quick and easy and we got straight into our room. All the staff we friendley and helpful and proved to be very efficient
We had a studio appartment which was well furnished and had a sea veiw. to wards the end of our stay my back was causing me a great deal of pain a call to the the front desk had a doctor in our room in 30 minutes at a cost of 100 euros plus 40 euros for an injection. The doctor also gave me a receipt to clam the cost back, he also gave me a prescription which he said could be actioned by cab if i required to which i agreed he gave the prescription to the front desk which was duly filled and bought to the room by a member of staff. I cannot thank the Hotel staff enough for thier promt and efficient action during my stay.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are better.

We were really disappointed with this hotel. We were expecting 5* and it was more like a 3 or 4*.

The hotel is really small, the room was really basic and the food was not of a high standard and was over priced.

Having said this i think if you go with the expectation that you are going to get a 4* hotel then you wouldnt be disappointed.

We found the hotel and the facilities were excellent. The room was spacious and the furniture and decor was realaxing. The eating area was varied and so depending on the weather we could match our seating choice. The staff were friendly and very helpful. A most enjoyable week
