The hotel looks impressive and the staff are wonderfully helpful and friendly. The rooms are fine, quite spacious with two comfy armchairs to sit in. They also have extensive English television, if, like me, you're a telly addict!
However, there were a few niggles that took the glitter off a bit.
The food is impressive, but not hot. Breakfast has lovely bread and all the usual choices, but the English breakfast just isn't kept hot enough. Okay, the eggs are freshly cooked, but the bacon, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms and hash browns were just about tepid, even after we'd mentioned it to the restaurant manager. Perhaps this would improve when the hotel was full and the food didn't stand so long? The Italian a la carte was fine, although the choice is quite limited, but the food here was too salty (and I'm a person who likes salt!)
They give you a few sachets of coffee and tea bags in your room, but these are never replenished. We didn't ask for more at reception, though, so can't say whether they would give you more if you asked.
The rooms are fairly well sound-proofed, but when your neighbour has a shower at 7.15 every morning, you will be woken up! It's possibly louder than the shower in your own bathroom!
The Grand is generally a very good hotel, but it is let down by these little niggles - I mean, how much would it cost to replenish tea and coffee - even Travelodge does that!!!

Everything about this hotel is great from the reception you are given on arrival, to the everyday service, the food, the cleanliness and the friendly, helpful staff who go out of their way to anticipate you every need. The gardens are extensive and well maintained and it has several pools including an indoor pool.

The surrounding area to the hotel caters for all your needs including excellent restaurants if you wish to dine outside the hotel, to the Forum which has a mixture of shops including a super market and a cinema.

There is a free bus to and from the hotel into Funchal as well as frequent local buses with a bus stop just yards from the hotel.

This was our 4th time to the Pestana Grand Hotel. We were there on the first week it opened in 2004, and every single year till 2007 when my husband had some health problems and we could not leave the country. So we returned in 2010. Everything in the hotel looked like what we already knew and loved. The surroundings were another story. Why on earth are they building so much? Everywhere you go you see things being built and machines. A terrifying experience if you ask me. I love my stay, though.
Only thing I noticed in the hotel was that all the restaurant staff we once knew and loved were gone. I can never forget Sidonio who helped us so much in 2007. And Teresa from the bar, i found out that she died, i was devastated.
But let's hope we can return in 2011 to this great hotel.

Good service, very friendly staff. The hotel is a bit out from the city centre of Funchal. It takes around 1.5hrs to walk from the hotel. The walk along the promonaede is very nice with several restaurants along the way. The breakfast buffet is a very large selection. The hotel restaurants are good if you are non vegeterian. It is better and cheaper to eat out. Go for bed and breakfast especially if you are veggie like me! There is a very good selection of restuarants within a 10 - 15 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel facilities are also good. The only downside is that the hotel claim's free wireless but this is only available in the main foyer area and not in the rooms. The hotel restaurants have a very limited choice for vegetarians.

Overall the hotel is very good and we would stay there again.

We loved the pool, sauna and steam room (one of the best we have seen) and the hotel is lovely in every way. However the service was quite haphazard, with some staff going the extra mile and others being quite surly and unhelpful. Room housekeeping was poor - dirty cups not taken out of the room, glasses not provided, only coffee no tea - until we asked for tea bags - not what you expect in 4 let alone 5 star. We paid for Christmas lunch and it was terrible - the turkey was tough and inedible, the vegetarian option was an unimaginative pile of boiled vegetables, replaced by tasteless veg lasagne when my daughter complained.
It was not worth anything like the 26 Euros each which we paid, but the pudding was nice!
Would I go back there? Maybe, if I thought the service had improved. The PR manager was lovely and helpful, but she could not make up for the lack of attention to detail or the occasional long wait for bar service, when there were no other customers around.

Thank you all for reviews - I chose a great hotel for vacation.
Madeira is heaven on earth where short sleeves are sufficient for day and night in October, food is superb, the island is green and blossoming.
Tips for vacation in Madeira - don't forget your hiking boots, flash light (head flash light is better), raincoat and backpack. Beware of cobble pavements and choose your footwear carefully. Make sure to have a walk in levadas early in the morning, when there are no clouds. It gets cloudy in the afternoon.
Pestana Grand is a very good quality for the price paid. It is a long walk to the town centre, but a very pleasant, indeed.
WiFi is in the lobby/lounge (and outdoors) only and it is free. Is some rooms you can connect to Internet via telephone set, if you have a relevant cable. But a fee is charged for such connection.
I changed rooms during vacation, since my first one was right behind the reception. It was difficult to call it "side sea view" and I could perfectly hear music from the lounge. I found lots of worms in the balcony from the grass outside.
But room No 1227 on the 2nd floor was great and much closer to the sea. It was very quiet, great views, good interior planning, safe-box in the closet, bathrobe (but no slippers). Watch your step in the shower cubicle - it is very slippery.
I have already recommended this hotel to my friends and we are going back to Pestana Grand in March 2011 :-)

My wife and I have just returned from our fifth visit to this fabulous hotel and we are certain to return again. We were very impressed on our first visit 4 years ago - so much so that we went back 9 WEEKS later, but the hotel had not been open that long and so everything was new and SHOULD be OK. However, each time we go back the hotel still looks like it has only just opened, the staff are courteous, always pleasant, helpful and very professional about their duties. We always stay B&B as we like to eat out at night in the local restaurants, of which there is a huge selection. Breakfast can only be described as a feast, if that is what you want, leave here hungry and it is your own fault. The choice is EVERYTHING with Variety, a huge slection of cereals, a huge selection of Fruits - fresh and dried, a huge section of cooked food with your choice of eggs or omolettes cooked on request, Breads, Cheeses, Meats, the list goes on and on, all washed down with excellent Coffee, a selection of Tea's or if it is your preference, sparkling wine and we even witnessed one couple take the whole bottle !!!!

Days around the outdoor pool in December can be hit and miss but the indoor pool and spa area more than make up for the lost time outside it is a pleasure to spend the afternoon lazing around here after a hard morning walk, the hydro pool will soon ease any aches and pains you have, and then there is the Jacuzzi, Sauna and Steam room.

We didn't use any of the restaurants in the hotel this time but have in the past and Yes you can eat cheaper out but the quality and service in the Italian and Morrocan Resturants are still - by all accounts, very good.

Nothing is too much trouble at the Pestana Grand, each time we return we usually stay in the same room on the second floor, this time the carpets in the corridors on the second floor were being replaced so the staff put us in the the same room 2 floors higher, we had the same views but slightly better as we were further above the tree line.

Finally upon leaving the hotel I managed to leave a new Lambswool pullover on the seat outside the door, I contacted the hotel when I got home and Yes they have confirmed they have it and asked for my home address so that they can post it too me - You just don't get service like there everywhere.

Well Done Pestana - we look forward to seeing you again.
