“Couldn't Have Loved This Hotel More”
Reviewed 25 November 2007

We decided to book this hotel for a week for my son's first holiday abroad. The one bedroom apartment was spacious and well equipped and the furnishings were of a really high standard. The staff were friendly and attentive and the man who checked us in remembered my husband's name and asked him how we were enjoying our stay half way through the week.
Breakfast was included and I've never seen such a wonderful array of food! There were various cereals, pastries and breads and eggs were freshly cooked to or der. One of the waitresses, Lena, was particularly friendly and took a real shine to our son. She brought a high chair over to our table each morning.
We would definitely return to this hotel as the facilities on offer were second to none. Highly recommended.

16 members of my family stayed at the Porto Mare Hotel for a week in August 2007. The reason for the holiday was to celebrate two things firstly my husband and I reached our 25 year wedding anniversary, and my Mother celebrated her 80th birthday .

We did a lot of searching to try and find a holiday that suited such a wide range of people aged from 8 years up to 82 years, (this included 4 young people aged 17 – 24) and Madeira and the Porto Mare Hotel certainly had something to suit every single person. The staff, the food the facilities were all first class.

We certainly hope to return again in the not to distant future.

This was our 13th visit to Madeira and our 3rd visit to the Residence, from 20th Aug - 3rd Sept.
It was great as usual - great facilities, super friendly staff (particularly at the Bar Varanda - Jose, Rosete, Carina, Pedro, Andreia, Hernan - and all the others whose names I forget!) The guys who get the guardasols are very friendly and can give good advice - thanks Lino, Ricardo, etc.

We ate in the Med again - very good, tho I thought that they had reduced the choice. We also ate at the Atlantida for the first time in all our visits. I am not very fond of buffet type meals but it was very good - everything was very fresh, great choice. We gave the Balsamico a miss this year - it is not very exciting.

We ate in other restaurants nearby - we visited the Brasserie (at the start of the Promenade, underneath the Tivoli) a couple of times. It is very good, not too dear and very friendly staff. They remembered us from last year!

There is a new restaurant opened at the start of the Promenade, just to the left. It is called the Qazbah and, as the name suggests, specialises in N. African cuisine. I had lamb tagine - very nice, good helping. They aslo do a wide range of snacks, toasted sandwiches etc at very reasonable prices.

We always try a couple of new restaurants. This year we went to the Fort San Tiago in the Old Town. Expensive, but a beautiful and very different meal. You get a free glass of cava before the meal. My wife does not drink so I had hers and a bottle of nice local wine which was reasonably priced and very drinkable.

We also went to the Golden Gate for dinner. We had eaten there before a few years ago and we decided to try it again. Expensive and not at that good. The staff were very rushed and the food was basically thrown at you.

I went on a couple of levada walks which were great. It always amazes me how different it is up in the mountains - on one of the walks it was very misty but in Funchal the sun was blazing - 28 degrees!

We love Madeira and the people although we heard that crime is going up tho the local police are very quick to clamp down on it. Apparently there were a lot of young people gathering in the Santa Caterina Park so they put up a fence and the gates are locked each night at 11pm. However, we have seen nothing. Even during the Wine Festival (glass of wine or beer 1 euro!) we didn't even see any drunks! (except me possibly!)

However, we will be back again next year. We may go in May as well as August.

Having heard about the wonderful flowers and botanical gardens etc on Madeira we decided to give it a try as we are keen gardeners. I booked a weeks stay at the Hotel Porto Mare thro a well known tour operator on the internet as it was most convenient and fairly short notice, after looking up the resort and hotel and seeing very good reports. All I can say it was a most excellent visit in all ways, from the great and friendly staff in the hotel and the very high standard of the hotel ,I would rate this complex as 5star anyday, the place was immaculate, from the pools and restaurants to the whole ambience of the Porto Mare . We were so pleased with our visit its probably the first resort we have been to where we considered a timeshare, (we did buy one), the standard was so good, aand we are looking forward to returning. The nearby local park is so well maintained and does not give any problems that we could see. The views from the whole complex are stunning, this resort and hotel really does give you a great feeling of relaxation and well being. There are plenty of local excellent restaurants reasonably priced and all the usual superb wines etc associated with this lovely island.

The Residence apartment and the whole resort was absolutely luxurious!

Stayed a week at Porto Mare and enjoyed our stay every minute! The pools were terrific (especially the heated indoor one) and there was plenty of sunbeds. Only disapointment was the fee for an umbrella, at a resort of this high standard it should be free.

Our apartment was towards the pool/sea, so we didn't hear at all noise from the next-door construction area (But would not recommend a stay in the apartments/rooms/suites facing the building site during the time the next door hotel is built, because it causes noise and dust to rooms/apartments balconies.).

The breakfast was splendid, lots to choose from! The staff at the entire resort was very polite, cheerful and helping. Especially our cleaning-maid Fatima was a true sweetheart! The apartment was very clean every day! With staff like her guests will surely come back! [Thank you Fatima! :-) ] The best thing was that there was so much to do at the resort, so even if it rained during two days it didn't matter that much. Loved Porto Mare and are going back - some day...

Liked Madeira much more than the Canaries, because here you can get a glimpse of the locals and the atmosphere is much more friendly and service-minded than i.e. Tenerife or Rhodes. And the beautiful old buildings and charming parks (full of beautiful flowers) in Funchal gives the holiday a lovely surrounding to enjoy.

  • Liked — the pool area, apartment, location, free shuttle bus, bathrobes, daily cleaning of apartment
  • Disliked — the fee for sunumbrella

We have just returned from a week in The Residence at Vila Porto Mare, booked directly on hotel website on their internet one bed apartment package on a B & B basis way back in the autumn.
We had previously stayed at a neaerby hotel and walked past this every day and it looked so nice we decided to book it for our next holiday. So when I read some of the recent reviews on here about a week before we went I panicked as I had specifically requested a quite room, I have a medical condition and if I don't get proper rest can get ill very quickly. I contacted the hotel by e mail and after an initial ' we can't allocate specific rooms till the day' response - which I told then I did not think was satisfactory given how long ago I had booked it - they came up with a solution i.e. that the first night would be on the side of the hotel where the building works are going on, but that it would be in the right sort of apartment, and they would move us guaranteeing it would be in the am and hassle free, to an equivalant apartment on the other side away from noise etc. Since our first night was a Saturday there would be no work on the sunday anyway. They also gave us a free dinner to compensate for the inconvenience. I said this was acceptable and they were as good as their word. The move was done efficiently and as promised and it was not real problem. In an ideal world maybe they should inform people of work going on etc - but what most people would do then is cancel I guess so ...... anyway - they were helpful, sympathetic, efficient in resolving the problem.

Aside from that there is loads to praise about this resort. The apartments themselves are truly excellent - spacious, modern, comfortable, spotlessly clean, incredibly well equipped and any little problem was swiftly sorted - a light and the iron - both replaced immediately. The gardens are lovely - there was no noise from the little park opposite that I was aware of - the pools are excellent, the bar food is good, and we also ate in 3 of the 4 restaurants. The free meal was for the buffet restaurant - not something I would go for by choice but we went on a night that had a ' theme' we fancied and it was fine. The Italian restaurant down on the prom level was very nice if not special, and the Restaurant med where we ate on the first night was really very nice indeed with an imaginative menu and very romantic atmosphere.

Like most people though we enjoy trying a variety of places to eat in the evenings. We rarely had lunch as the breakfast is so abundant! However we do drop into cafe teatro opposite the sao francisco gardens from time to time and this time also went to s lovely little old fashioned cafe tucked away in the corner of the square - praca municipale - which has the town hall in it - the cafe is called leque and we had breakfast there one morning when we had wanted to be in town early to see places before it got too hot ( first hotel bus in is 9.15 so we didn't get up in time for that and brekkie in hotel!). We had delish croissants and 'milk bread' ( like brioche), superb fruit juice and the best coffe in madeira in that little cafe along with the madeiran punters dropping in on way to work - so cheap it was unebelievable and looks great for a snack too mid day.

We did do the afternoon tea at Reids this time - yeah yeah it is pricey but it was lovely and romantic and there was NO rush to move you on at all. Nice memory!

There are some great restaurants - quinta palmeira and the Fort are my faves so far but they are pricier. Sometimes if it worth taking a risk on somewhere that maybe looks or sounds iffy - we ended up one night in 'paradise' ( cringey name and looks bit tacky from the road) but we had a fantastic meal on the terrace overlooking the sea, including a flambe fish dish cooked with great style and flair at our table - fab and not pricey. In the old town we also enjoyed Tapossol in the old town facing onto grass and seafront just past cable car station - especially the aged portugese brandy we had at the end of the meal - well worth 5 euros a glass and we bought a bottle at the airport and 5 euros is a very fair price! They have an interesting menu and some nice wines - they recommended one to us which the guy said ' was not the most expensive but is the best' - and it was gorgeous. I was also impressed that when they suddenly realised it was about to chuck it down they moved us and our table inside so fast I hardly knew it had happened! Good atmosphere and not so touristy as some.

We found every single member of staff we had contact with to be EXCELLENT - reception, restaurant, pool, porters - we felt all of them but one ( girl in the pool bar who was a bit of a teenager with attitude!) of them wanted you to have a great holiday and that they took pride in making it so for you.

If we were in a position to do so right now we would be looking seriously at timeshare here - sadly we can't at present - but I would recommend without hesitation this resort. If there is something you are worried about - do something about it in advance rather than wait and moan if it is then hard to sort out - that is the beauty of a site like this - my experience was that they were able and willing to resolve your concerns.
