“Lovely week at The Residence”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

This was our first trip to Madeira and we booked The Residence as it has consistently had good reviews. As stated in other reviews, the hotel shares its facilities with two other hotels which means that their are more facilities to use.

We were slightly disappointed in our room as the view was of a garden and a road and the balcony was shady most of the time. However, to be fair, we didn't ask to move and can appreciate that not all rooms can have great views. The room had all we needed and was no concerns re cleanliness.

The pool and outside area is gorgeous. Plenty of sunbeds and all have umbrellas. We did not have any problems getting a sunbed, even when we went down to the pool area relatively late.

We only ate at the buffet restaurant which was excellent and good value for money.

We were pleased with the location of the hotel - a short walk into Funchal or an easy taxi ride. Hotel is relatively central without being in a busy area which was ideal for us. We booked trips at a local information area and were picked up outside the hotel. There is also a supermarket close by which was reasonable. There are lots of bars and restaurants close by if you don't want to go into Funchal.

We were a bit disappointed with the entertainment on an evening. We tended to go out to eat and when we returned to the hotel about 9.30 / 10am there was very little to do. There was a duo singing in the Portofino bar but this tended to be the same each night and could have been a bit livelier. Drinks are also expensive - 3 euros for a small beer which is a bit excessive compared to other bars close by.

Overall, an enjoyable week and would return to the hotel again.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for such a nice and comprehensive review shared with so many other holiday makers about your recent stay.

Within the Vila Porto Mare we have a second bar with different type of music on a daily basis. Next time please check Oceano Bar or by the main pool in some days of the week during summer.

Sincerely hope to welcome you and hopefully soon,

Warm regards

Muito obrigado

Right after we've arrived, we were assigned a room, not as I've booked, including a balcony view to the street. It was not a huge problem, but I decided to talk about this with the staff which promptly gave us a pleasing alternative. We've stayed for 6 days and the staff was very, very friendly since we've arrived. Beds were very comfortable and room had plenty of space. The whole place is extremely clean, in both public areas and room.
The hotel as many spots to relax, good restaurants and bars. The outside garden is quite enjoyable at evening. During the day, there are 4 reasonable sized water pools to choose from and 2 hot tubs. The water temperature is nice and refreshing.
The only things I can complain about are: 1) the snack bar by the outside pool (Varanda) should have more snacks to choose from, specially more fresh fruit juices; and lack of free wifi in rooms (although there's free wifi in public spaces, except pools).
I highly recommend this hotel!

This is our 9th visit and this very fact should indicate how much we enjoy visiting The Residence! Each year some things are "tweaked" and we noticed a couple of changes again this year. Firstly we were visiting with our four grandchildren aged between 5 months and 9 years. The older three loved the Kid's Club and, in particular, Mr Brown. Whilst I appreciate he is not everyone's cup of tea he has injected a sense of fun and frivolity into their experience. They loved learning dances with him and in particular thought the opportunity to perform them at Pink Party was great. There are lots of sporting facilities and a great gym which was appreciated by some of our party (we were 10 in all). The pools are fabulous and the gardens continue to have the WOW factor. However, I have to agree with a previous reviewer about the reserving of sunbeds with towels - these should have been removed by staff. For the first time ever we did not attend the BBQ - quite expensive when you add the cost of drinks to it. I think young children should be charged less than half price. We found the standard of cleanliness had been maintained although the maids always seemed extremely busy - maybe they have more rooms to clean than before? The management are approachable and friendly and all the staff have high levels of customer care. No doubt we will be back again next year!

Room Tip: Try and avoid rooms overlooking the side street.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the feedback about your recent 9th stay at The Residence.
It is rewarding to know that you have enjoyed another holiday experience with us. Also happy to learn that your family enjoyed Mr Brown with his new activities.
Regarding the cleaning service, this year, and in order to have the apartments cleaned a bit earlier, we have some extra staff on Mondays to help our regular staff.

Looking forward to welcome you,

Warm regards,

Muito obrigado

Returned to the residence once again as an owner of a weeks time share. Disappointed to find that the cleanliness upon arrival not up to its usual standard - toothpaste around the bathroom sink, the underside of the toilet seat in a dirty state (to put it politely) and old cup stains on the outside table. I realise that housekeeping is under enormous pressure on a Monday and I can accept cobwebs around the lamps and on the walls and other more minor things but these are pretty fundamental. I do think the cleaning standards have gone down - a couple of dead flies remained on the floor in the lounge all week - so perhaps complancency is setting in or more staff are needed, particularly on a Monday, to do a more thorough job. That aside the place is still great, all the staff friendly and helpful and the general ambiance good. The gardens are still wonderful and very well maintained. We tend to eat out most nights but did eat twice in The Med restaurant which is still a great place. I am not sure about some of the entertainment though. The 'gentleman' in the big purple hat is more Butlins than Porto Mare but then again I don't have to watch it, although the concept of a quiet evening in a bar has gone! I do think the entertainment has gone down since the earlier days when it was in the Lido bar with different high quality acts, eg David Hedges, but it may well suit a lot of people. All in all still a great place but just needs to decide what it really wants to be - a high quality resort in all aspects or a more typical holiday resort.

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for staying at our hotel and for your thoughts about it.

We feel sorry for the less positive experience you had. I have taken good note about the issues raised, mainly the cleaning service that we will give proper attention.

Regarding the entertainment, please understand that during summer we have such a heterogeneous type of clientele that somehow "force" us o come up with some new activities dedicated to children and families athmosphere... David Hedges left the island years ago and unfortunately there is no one with a similar show.

We would be most pleased to welcome you for a future visit to Madeira and our hotel.

Warm regards,

Muito obrigado,

Great hotel with lots of sport activities and a great selection of restaurants in and around the hotel.
The maids come in everyday and keep your room nice, clean, and tidy. The staff are all very friendly and will try to help you as much possible. The free wifi in the room is very useful!

Apartments as clean and comfortable as in previous years; friendly maids and food excellent. However, despite a ruling about no towels to be left on sun beds for more than 90 minutes unattended, by 8.30 am each morning of our first week there all the sunbeds had been reserved and no towels were removed by ground staff at any time during our two week stay.

Also, surprised to see topless sunbathing on main lawns. No BBC channels available on TV.

Room Tip: Some rooms overlook the road, some look out on semi-private lawns, which are lovely if downstairs, w...

Dear Guest,

Just a short message to thank you for another stay and for your feedback.

Sorry if we were not able to fulfill all your needs, during this holiday experience.
Regarding the points mentioned that took you to write about it please understand that we would need a battalion of staff to control all the different clients behavior.
We can only create procedures and basically implement a control in order to be better today than we were yesterday, but we are dealing with people behaviors, therefore we will never be perfect.

We sincerely hope to welcome you in a future visit to Madeira.

Warm regards,

Muito obrigado,

This was our 9th visit to the Residence and the quality and standards are as good as ever.
When we visit we feel like we are coming home to see old faces.
There is tremendous support from the Customer Relations staff. Claire was great in helping us when my wife fell ill and thankfully she was able to recover and enjoy the remainder of the holiday.
We are looking forward to our 2015 stay already.
