We found this church by accident and were so pleased we did! Very pretty interia and peaceful. The climb to the roof is well worth it for the wonderful views over the roof tops.

A beautiful little church and a Funchal must do...close to the centre. Go after 3pm to be on the safe side. We recently had the pleasure of listening to the young choir practising...wow! If you would like a little quiet time do go and enjoy the calm, paintings and carvings

We visited Funchal during a cruise to the Azores and Canaries and had pre-booked a rental car to get around the island.
We spent some few hours during the afternoon walking around this interesting city and the Cathedral was one of the sights we wanted to see.
Whilst the exterior may not be spectacular the inside certainly is with cedar ceilings, gold inlays and Flemish paintings around the walls.
It is actually located quite near the local market which is also worth a visit, especially the fish wholesale section.

You can stop off here whilst walking uphill to Quinta das Cruzes/Museu Frederico. Its also quite near the Sacred Art Musuem. Filled with gilded woodwork framing scenes from the Life of Christ and rustic scenes of angels reaping corn, gathering grapes as ingredients for the Last Supper. The nave ceiling is decorated with patterns of roses, lilies and columbines. Glazed tiles from the 17th century cover almost all the interior walls from the bottom to the top. If you walk up the hill and look back you can see the church tower decorated with colourful tiles.
