“A wonderful Holiday in a prime location Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2013

We spent 2 weeks in Jardins d'Ajuda and it was fantastic. We had a nice room with balcony overlooking the nice gardens and the big swimming pool. Staff were friendly and we were always given due attention to all our requirements, treated like kings :) Breakfast varied from day to day and offered everything for the taste of all, being English breakfast, fruit, yogurt, cereals, cakes, juices, a variety of bread, chocolate spread, vegetables, ham .... you name it they had it. Same can be said for lunch and dinner just outstanding at reasonable prices. The hotel is also situated in a prime location next to Forum Madeira, with supermarkets, shops and tons of restaurants. The Hotel also offer a free shuttle bus from the Hotel to Funchal during the day. What do you want more for such a bargain priced Hotel with an outstanding service! We will come again! Thanks you for making us feel home! A safe place to stay.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool offer breath-taking views :)

The food was TERRIBLE but the hotel and facilities are good!
Chemical food
Not fresh food
Low standard food
Not worthy of 4 stars food
Even city trip hotels have better food

But

Awesome view from the room

The facts about the Jardin D’Ajuda Hotel. It is situated 10 minutes west from Funchal. In a built up area, with many local inhabited apartment blocks and the new Forum shopping centre. The sea is a 5minute walk down very steep path (not ideal if you have joint problems). The promenade is a nice place to walk along. The hotel is your standard basic 1970’s built, their 4* equates to 2-3 in furnishings in the public areas and the rooms. The chairs and carpeted area worn, lacks atmosphere. Mainly suited to the over 60’s and families with young children. Many French, German, Russian and Finnish people. Evening entertainment local singer and keyboard and weekly folk group. Bar prices expensive. All reception, housekeeping staff very pleasant and helpful. If you manage to get a cheap deal be thankful and read other reviews so you are fully aware of what you are getting for your money, as the pictures are very deceiving.
Check your room type allocation before so not to be disappointed if this is important or you may find that you have to pay extra. If travelling with Mercury Direct then be prepared to pay even more upgraded prices as it is only a request.

If this is important to you. There are 10 floors. The rooms, on the 3rd 4th and 5th odd numbers give you views of garden and roof of restaurant which doubles as the tennis court. 6th - glimpse of sea view and small pool and other apartments. 7-10 = better views to the sea and mountain. The pool view increases with the higher up you are. There are 7 other apartment blocks all overlooking onto one another if you are on a pool view rather like a goldfish bowl. The even numbers can look directly across the street into other apartments and the sea view rooms with main road below– the higher you go the better the chance.

Many guests I spoke to thought the meals were basic, lacked flavour and the meat often tough. This is how it is.
Dress code very relaxed and casual.

The indoor pool facilities very basic, small and dated. The smell from the changing rooms sauna and steam not welcoming,. Did not feel inviting or relaxing compared to many other hotel spas. The pool and Jacuzzi water is warm. The outdoor pool great, lots of loungers, showers and cushions plus free towels. The gardens are pretty. The apartments of local residents look down on this area and you are looking at their washing. The air conditioning unit on top of the restaurant roof is a bad design as it is on continuously day and night and when lying around the pool or in your room you have this noisy drone all the time especially if you have the windows open. Such a pity as otherwise would be peaceful and quiet. The fact that smoking is allowed around the pool can be of putting to non smokers.

Smoking is also allowed at the exit area to the pool, around the poolside, outside reception and on balcony’s.

There is a free shuttle bus into town on the hour, it stops about a 5 minute walk into the centre due to the building of a new harbour so if you have difficulty walking best to use the local bus service that will drop you right into the town centre. There are plenty of local buses at nearby stops.
If you are travelling independently use the aero bus from the airport plenty regular times it is 7.50 euros return and stops very near hotel.

The new lido park is 5 euro entry per day + 2 euro sunbed + 2 euro unbrella for locals with a card much cheaper if you know a local person. Great place, safe for children but steep walk back if you use the exit/entrance down from the Baia Zul. Has café.

For sunbathers the sun tends to come out first thing then cloud over later in day. Very deceiving use sunscreen even in overcast conditions.

I was very disappointed with this hotel, a good base but not enjoyable. I would not recommend this to my friends.
To be fair as all hotels in Funchal there will be modernising work being carried out in the future.

My daughter and I have just spent 2 wonderful weeks at this lovely hotel where nothing was too much for any member of staff. The manager treats every body as an individual. The rooms were well serviced bedding changed every other day. Only slight downside was some of the foreign guests were very boisterous and rude pushing and shoving etc. But my praise again go to the wonderful staff who took it all in their stride and remained calm and pleasant . The food was wonderfully displayed. The hotel gardens immaculate in fact everything was so good.

Room Tip: Our room had a small kitchenette which was excellent for preparing snacks and drinks. The courtesy s...

We stayed there wi kids and friends and the staff is nice location great , the shopping is nearby gardens are great rooms very large and nicely decorated... Bathrooms might need some improvements and it is quite far from the old city Funchal but they have a bus during the day ... Also if you do not like large groups of seniors then you might have a problem.....

We stayed here on summer 2012. There is lot of rooms in this hotel, but it is still very quiet. Room was clean and big. Only thing that I didn't like was the carpet on the floor; it seems to be quite a shabby. Hotel area is clean and pool area is very nice. There is also a small children's pool. Lot of sunbeds for everyone and waitress brought beverages on the order. Breakfast was versatile. Big bonus was the free bus to the city center. You can also use a public buses, which goes from the next street. There is also a small shopping center. Reception was very polite and also staff in the upstairs restaurant were very polite.

Only minus was the problems with the towels and the bar: hotel does not recommend to take your own towels or room towels to the pool area. You will get a pool towel card, when you sign in to the hotel. You give this card to the pool boy and you will get a clean towel. That is fine system, but when the pool boy was gone, you could not get any towels at all. Sign on the pool desk says, that at that time you can ask towels from the reception. But they did not give any towels. So we have to wait until the pool boy came back from his other works. After this we took our own towels to the pool area. Also if you want snacks from the bar, it takes too long (we waited 1 our to get french fries and sandwich). There is not very good restaurants near by at hotel. Bar also had an happy our time, but still they did not sell those drinks for some reason.

In March of 2013, I stayed at Jardíns d'Ajuda hotel in the island of Madeira for a week with breakfast.

The weather was windy, a little cold and it rained a few times. So it wasn’t pleasant to swim outdoor, but the hotel has a heated swimming pool indoor.

Most of the customers were elderly French, British, Swedes and Norwegians. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. This hotel is a good place to just relax at an affordable price. The evening entertainment by a father and his daughter was almost the same for almost a whole week, it was good, though a little repetitive. Their songs nevertheless made the elderly cheerfully sing and dance, some were shaking like teenagers (it is never too late….).

The cleaning staff worked pretty hard to keep the hotel constantly clean. The staff at the reception were respectful, helpful, cheerful and took the time to answer all the questions in good English and even in some other languages. The gardener worked alone very hard caring for all the banana trees and other exotic trees and flowers in the hotel area. These people were amazing. I wish I could give the hotel 4 * because of the quality of service from the employees, but the final score is rather a strong +3 *.

The buffet breakfast was very good, the food was clean, varied and abundant, catering for almost all tastes. Even those with lactose intolerance could find something to eat. I just wished they provided a little more cheese variety as there was only one sort of cheese for the entire week. Everything was freshly made. The staff were helpful and worked hard to keep all the diners happy. When I saw what was on offer at the buffet dinner, I decided to eat in the hotel on five evenings as I had no reason to eat elsewhere, but there are very good restaurants in the area. I was a little disappointed though when I didn’t get ice cream for desert.

The central heating didn’t work in my cold room. I didn’t expect much but told a cleaner who happened to be cleaning the adjacent room. Few minutes later a technician came to check on the heater, he couldn’t repair it immediately so he brought a stand-alone heater to my room and explained for me how it worked. All this took less than 30 minutes. I call this first-class service.

One thing I didn’t understand was why the staff turned off the light in the small shower rooms near the indoor swimming pool. I brought this issue to the staff’s attention. The explanation they gave was that the massage staff turn off the lights when they have a customer in the adjacent room. I still don’t understand why the lights had to be turned off….. that made the shower rooms dark. This is a safety issue that the hotel must address, because most of the customers are elderly people that could easily stumble, fall and get injured when they use the dark shower rooms.

Internet was available 24/7 only in the reception area and the hotel’s nice pub. The quality of the network was good.

You actually don’t need to leave the hotel at all because they provide everything you need, however, there is a large shopping center near the hotel that has a European style. There is also a free hotel bus that take you to Funchal several times a day and surprisingly all days of the week. I personally think one should take a few trips to some beautiful places in the island, the reception will help you with the agents that provide this service. The agents presented by the reception are trustworthy and serious. You can choose between taxi, minibus or bus for the trips. You can also find cheaper agents outside the hotel.

One irritating thing that I didn’t like about this hotel was that smoking was unfortunately permitted. Some chain smokers abused this permission and it wasn’t easy to avoid them as they occupied the entrances. Luckily, smoking was restricted to one area of the garden.

This is to the manager of the hotel. Dear sir, please add an “Unsubscribe” button at the bottom of the emails your hotel is sending to your past customers. It is unsuitable to use our official email addresses to send advertisements and other unimportant emails that we didn’t ask for. In some countries it is illegal to send unsolicited emails. I was never asked at the reception if i’m interested in receiving emails from your hotel.

It was my third visit to Madeira, the capital Funchal has changed a lot. It used to be a small charming village with a lot of flowers, now it has become more of a European city with large hotel complexes, shops, roads, cars and pollution from vehicle emission. I felt sad seeing how much Funchal has changed as Madeira is a small, charming and green island, building roads all over it will take away the very reason why visitors come to the island in the first place. I hope their politicians sooner rather than later wake up to this very fact, before it is too late.

Despite Swedes being one of the highest consumers of banana in the world, the banana trees are seldom seen in Sweden other than in botanical gardens, therefore, it is very tempting to pick banana from the trees in Madeira. We tourists must nonetheless be respectful towards the farmers. Those juicy Madeiran bananas can be bought in all the local supermarkets at a reasonable price.

Madeirans are pleasant, friendly and welcoming people, full of dignity and integrity. Tourists never get attacked, threatened or abused in any way like in some other nasty countries, which is one of the reasons why tourists, most of which elderly and pensioners from EU, keep revisiting the island. Other reasons are of course the famous Madeiran food and wine and last but not least, the beauty of the island itself. I will probably revisit the island for the fourth time next Winter, hopefully the weather will be better.

Room Tip: Rooms in the higher floors have better view and quality.
