“Great hotel - beautiful views!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2011

Our stay at the Hotel Panoramico was fantastic - the hotel is lovely! The rooms are very clean and have a wonderful view of either the sea or the mountains. Our room, whilst facing the mountains, was extremely spacious and was cleaned every day. Even when I'd accidently spilt a bit of Diet Coke on the sheets and tried to cover it up, the sheets were immediately changed! My mother, who came with us, had a slightly smaller room, though it did face the sea and had the sunshine right from the morning.

We often ate in Funchal itself, but did eat at the Paladar restaurant on three occasions, each of which was fantastic with delicious food.

Our only, teeny, tiny gripe was the evening entertainment, which mostly consisted of a man sitting behind an electric piano, singing along to backing tracks of what can only be described as "random songs of the past 30 years" though strange intonation meant that some of the songs weren't particularly recognisable. Indeed, the evening entertainment often rendered the cocktail bar empty in the evenings - a shame as it's a good room and lovely to have a nightcap in.

Funchal itself is a lovely town, but it's really the Old Town where the culture can be found. The restaurants all compete for your custom, but they mostly offer the same mix of fish and meat. Remember, you'll be spending Euros, so it's not particularly cheap to eat out, but many of the restaurants have their own set menus for about 12 Euros. Otherwise, expect to pay around 10 - 15 Euros for a main course.

Finally, things to see.... well, for me, the best bit of our holiday was the trip on the cable car to Monte and the Tropical Gardens. The cable car is amazing - especially as a feat of engineering.
However, BEWARE!! We also took a mini-bus day trip around the island, designed to stop off at many of the "must-see" locations. True, the bus did stop at lots of different places... though very few of them would be classed as "places of interest." Combined with nearly throwing up on the bus as we bumped our way to the "natural swimming pools" the pools themselves were very rocky and none of our party decided that they wanted to partake in the swimming. Additionally, most of the stops were based around tourist shops, which were obviously the main reason for having a stop there.

Overall we spent a very pleasent 9 days at the Panoramico and I would definitely go there again... though definitely not the full day "sightseeing" on a sick-inducing minibus!!

Room Tip: The rooms facing the sea tend to be slightly smaller, but have the sunshine from the morning through...

just returned from a weeks stay at the Panoramico hotel on a B&B basis, hotel spotless, breakfast plenty to choose from and good quality, never used the pools or jacuzzi but all looked fine, we paid slightly extra for the sea view room and well worth it, the view from it was amazing, beds uncomfortably hard, but how boring, everyone was in bed by 10.00pm, the bar rarely had more than 10 people in it and the entertaiment bland by any standards, staff very pleasant, quite a hike from hotel to town, taxis about 7 euros, but a courtesey bus is available, would i return, probably not, a little to quiet in the evening for us, we are Male 60, Female 57.

Situated just outside the centre and with beautiful views from our room. We wanted a sea view but thought the mountain view was better, beautiful at night. Very pleasant stay. Lovely breakfast, but if you are down too late in the mornings the best bread rolls are gone! Rooms comfortable, beds are quite firm. Good stocked mini bar. We had one meal in the buffet restaurant which was very pleasant and reasonable. The Bar was very comfortable and bar meals were great. The indoor pool area with jacuzzi was a warm place to relax if the weather is not warm.
My only minor problem with the hotel is the lack of information in the rooms about local area, hotel facilities, restaurants. Lots of information in reception but it is good to have some to mull over in your own time. It took us a few attempts to find the indoor pool. Would of been good to have a map of the hotel in the room.
If you are not used to walking its a bit of a treck down hill into town but taxis are 6 euros or use the free bus from the hotel or number 45 local bus which stops outside.
We did two day trips around the island which were not cheap but as the weather was poor gave us something to do. There was snow, so some of the roads were closed and mist so we couldnt see the views but the 3 course lunch with wine for 10 euros was excellent.
We did a short trip with the chance of riding in a basket down the hill. Be warned- they wanted 25 euros per couple. We did not have enough cash on us but our tour bus had left for the bottom. We tried to walk down the roads but they were very hard on the knees. A taxi stopped and wanted 10E to go to the end of the ride which was as we found out only a couple of hundred yards on. The tour guide realised that he had told the rest of the coach but not us about cost.
Also beware of the fruit market. Lovely to visit, unusual fruit but you can be easily talked into tasting and buying at high prices. The supermarket is the best place to buy general fruit.
I recomend the cable car ride to the Botanical gardens, a pleasant journey with lovely views and gardens with birds.
Overall we were very pleased with the hotel. They were very thoughtful and left a bottle of fizzy wine and glasses for a birthday.

We had to make a last minute booking as we were booked to go to Egypt. We were concerned that we would end up in the resort nobody wanted in a hotel nobody wanted. However, we were very pleasantly suprised with both Madeira and the Hotel.

The Hotel was well located for us, being above the Hotel Zone, with lovely views and very quiet. The courtesy bus down town worked well and saved us trying to park in town. It was easy to get up to Junction 8 on the Express Way when going out walking and there was adequate parking. A useful Supermarket and a Pharmacy were 300 yds up the road opposite the Army Base.

The rooms were clean and comfortable. The meals were of a good standard for mass produced buffet foods. The fresh fruit and salads were particularly good. The staff were uniformly friendly and helpful.

A very good base for a Madeira holiday unless you want to be in the centre of clubs and restaurants.

We chose this hotel because it lies some way away from the 'tourist strip' quite high up a hillside overlooking the town of Funchal. The staff were friendly and helpful, the courtesy bus to the town very useful (and the driver very informative & helpful) and the buffet breakfast more than sufficient.
Then why not a 4 star you may ask? Well....
There was always a long wait for hot water in the shower in the morning, and in the evenings it was tepid at best.
The motion-sensitive lighting in the corridor was not working, leaving several dark areas.
The corridor carpets were wrinkled in several places presenting a trip hazard, especially in the dark - see above.
Doors to rooms bang noisily.
The room lighting, from free-standing bedside table lamps, is poor for anyone wishing to read in bed or sitting in the armchairs.
There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room.
The beds were extremely hard (although I accept this is a subjective issue)
A poor selection of TV channels - no pay per view or information channel about Madeira.
The room's 'welcome pack' contains no information about the local area, walking routes to the town, local buses etc.
There was a charge of over €11 for the room safe - this is a free service in so many 4* hotels nowadays.
The hotel's Paladar restaurant charged 4* prices but the surroundings were harsh, almost clinical and a surprise €1:70 'couvert' was added to the bill for each guest to pay for 3 unsolicited small slices of pain riche per person & a small scoopful of tuna pate.
No Internet service for guests although there is WiFi

All the above are indicative of a hotel that could try harder, but for anyone wanting a reasonable 3* hotel at a good price away from the tourist scrum, we would recommend it. For a luxury break? No.

I certainly agree with the review “Pleasant Panoramico”. Our recent holiday at this hotel was extremely enjoyable and Madeira is the perfect destination for some summer warmth before the onset of our cold weather.

The location of the hotel is out of town and although quite a distance to walk into the centre of Funchal, it is easy to catch the public buses or the very convenient and well run hotel courtesy bus.

The view from the hotel is spectacular, especially the sight of the sun rising over the distant islands (Ilhas Desertas), so well worth paying the extra for a sea view room.

You do get the occasional bout of barking dogs but that is just part of the way the people live and is not too troublesome.

The pool area was quite small but not overcrowded when we visited and sunbeds were easily obtainable – no towels on the sun loungers at this hotel! It was just the place to soak up the sun and relax.

The rooms were comfortably furnished and kept in good order, although the beds were a little hard - memory foam mattresses may be the answer to that problem!

All the staff were absolutely wonderful – everyone being very friendly and most willing to help in any way. In fact everyone we met in Madeira was friendly and welcoming; their whole way of life was certainly one to be envious of.

Food was well presented and enjoyable, there was a good choice for breakfast and the dining room pleasant, guests were even able to have breakfast on the terrace (even in the last week of October). We booked three evening meals at a very reasonable price of €57 each for the three buffet meals which compared well to the cost of meals in the town restaurants.

Madeira is on our list of places to return to and we would most definitely be staying at the Madeira Panoramico again.
