My husband and I stayed over Christmas in this wonderful hotel. We had a lovely room overlooking the harbour and the hillside rising up from the town. Without exception, the staff were fantastic and the service exemplary under the watchful eye of Mr. Spinola, the manager.
The hotel is in a perfect spot, with fantastic views, although, if you like to walk out to bars in the evening, there are not many around as it is in a residential area, but the hotel bar has "Happy Hour" from 6 to 7 each evening with drinks half price!. We ate in the a la carte restaurant 5 nights out of the 7 and the food was sensational, especially on Christmas Eve. The hotel has a complementary shuttle bus into Funchal until 6 p.m. as it is quite a walk downhill, but taxis aren't expensive and always available.Do try this hotel You won't regret it!

Room Tip: A room away from the road, although it's not too busy.

Have just returned after a lovely week at this hotel. Can't fault this hotel in any way, the room was clean, large and comfortable. Bathroom nice with powerful shower. We did'nt have a 'sea view' room but still had great views over the bay and also the mountains in the background. No traffic noise from our room on 2nd floor. We were B&B, good plentiful breakfast, lots of fresh fruit. We had 2 of our best meals at the al a carte restaurant (Paladar) 4 star food at reasonable cost. All the staff at hotel polite and friendly, special mention to Monika on reception who could tell you anything you needed to know about the island and the buses. We loved our first trip to Madeira and will be returning, would use this hotel again

Room Tip: We liked the rooms on the 2nd floor of main building

The hotel is great in an understated way and agree with other reviews re service, cleanliness etc. The views of the city and bay are superb. We especially enjoyed a good, relaxing breakfast on the terrace overlooking the city. I especially enjoyed the indoor swimming pool, quite big and nice and cool after a workout in the gym which was free. There were no weights but cycling machines, Concept 2 rower and treadmill. There was also an indoor glass ended squash court, sauna, steam room and an excellent outdoor tennis court tho' there was an extra charge for these facilities. We were at the hotel 2 weeks half board and went out on trips every other day and spent the alternative days reading on our balcony or beside the small outdoor pool. However, we would not return to this hotel because the evening meal was nearer 3* than 4* and there is a noisy road alongside one side of the hotel. The food at the evening meal was very predictable and became boring. The numerous cold salads were mainly made up of pasta, tinned beans and mushrooms mixed often with food left over from the previous evening. We ate twice at the Paladar a la carte restaurant (prices similar to UK) and the food was excellent. The hotel is built in two parts on a steeply sloping site connected by a footbridge and the different floor levels can be confusing to start with. There is a busy road up a steep hill alongside one of the buildings. Buses and lorries roar up this hill in low gear and the noise is very obtrusive and affects all the sea view rooms on that side (esp if you open the balcony doors) as well as the hotel terraces most of which are on that side of the hotel including, the outdoor swimming pool with loungers, the snack bar, the Paladar restaurant terrace and the gym terrace. If you are out all day every day or are used to living alongside a busy road then you will be ok, but if you want a quiet read......tho' I did get used to the noise to some degree over the 2 weeks. We asked to be moved to a different room from the one over looking the road to a sea view in the other building which overlooked the entrance car park and reception area which the hotel did after 24 hours and it is was pleasantly quiet. We would recommend a half day jeep ride which took us to places that a normal minibus couldn't go (30euros), and a trip to Monte via the botanical gardens starting with a no.30, 30A bus from Funchal. For a special ticket from one of the ticket booths at just under 16 euros you got a white knuckle bus ride up to the botanical gardens, entrance to the gardens (excellent areas of laid out cactus, box hedging and herbs as well as the flowers and an excellent cafe) a cable car to Monte and then return journeys to Funchal.

Room Tip: Avoid sea view rooms on south east side over looking road, go for a room overlooking the entrance ca...

The view is what stands out most of all in my mind. We paid extra for a seaview room and it was money well spent. I think my girlfriend got tired of me saying how stunning the view was everytime I looked out the window!

The hotel as a whole is fantastic. The staff were very polite and friendly (the shuttle bus driver being an exception as he was miserable everytime we used the service) and the hotel was very clean and comfortable. The beds were huge and the air conditioning kept me from melting.

How we felt the hotel could be improved - The hotel is a fair distance from Funchal. However, we knew this before we went, having read reviews on here, so we certainly can't hold that against the hotel. Plus they offer a regular, free (!), shuttle service for hotel guests and there is a regular bus service that stops just outside the hotel (the number 45 yellow bus). Yellow Bus tickets were also a reasonable 12 euros per person, for 5 days unlimited use. We would also have liked a kettle with tea/coffee facilities in the room and also it would be nice if the use of the tennis courts was free (5 Euros off-peak and 11 Euros at peak times).

The restaurant offers very good food but isn't the cheapest. We ended up having dinner there 3 out of 5 nights, partly for the convenience. Breakfast food was always being replenished and they even had madeira cake!!

We would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to go back there one day.

Room Tip: Seaview highly recommended. We had room 332 which is in the building furthest away from the road so...

Our stay at the Hotel Panoramico was fantastic - the hotel is lovely! The rooms are very clean and have a wonderful view of either the sea or the mountains. Our room, whilst facing the mountains, was extremely spacious and was cleaned every day. Even when I'd accidently spilt a bit of Diet Coke on the sheets and tried to cover it up, the sheets were immediately changed! My mother, who came with us, had a slightly smaller room, though it did face the sea and had the sunshine right from the morning.

We often ate in Funchal itself, but did eat at the Paladar restaurant on three occasions, each of which was fantastic with delicious food.

Our only, teeny, tiny gripe was the evening entertainment, which mostly consisted of a man sitting behind an electric piano, singing along to backing tracks of what can only be described as "random songs of the past 30 years" though strange intonation meant that some of the songs weren't particularly recognisable. Indeed, the evening entertainment often rendered the cocktail bar empty in the evenings - a shame as it's a good room and lovely to have a nightcap in.

Funchal itself is a lovely town, but it's really the Old Town where the culture can be found. The restaurants all compete for your custom, but they mostly offer the same mix of fish and meat. Remember, you'll be spending Euros, so it's not particularly cheap to eat out, but many of the restaurants have their own set menus for about 12 Euros. Otherwise, expect to pay around 10 - 15 Euros for a main course.

Finally, things to see.... well, for me, the best bit of our holiday was the trip on the cable car to Monte and the Tropical Gardens. The cable car is amazing - especially as a feat of engineering.
However, BEWARE!! We also took a mini-bus day trip around the island, designed to stop off at many of the "must-see" locations. True, the bus did stop at lots of different places... though very few of them would be classed as "places of interest." Combined with nearly throwing up on the bus as we bumped our way to the "natural swimming pools" the pools themselves were very rocky and none of our party decided that they wanted to partake in the swimming. Additionally, most of the stops were based around tourist shops, which were obviously the main reason for having a stop there.

Overall we spent a very pleasent 9 days at the Panoramico and I would definitely go there again... though definitely not the full day "sightseeing" on a sick-inducing minibus!!

Room Tip: The rooms facing the sea tend to be slightly smaller, but have the sunshine from the morning through...

just returned from a weeks stay at the Panoramico hotel on a B&B basis, hotel spotless, breakfast plenty to choose from and good quality, never used the pools or jacuzzi but all looked fine, we paid slightly extra for the sea view room and well worth it, the view from it was amazing, beds uncomfortably hard, but how boring, everyone was in bed by 10.00pm, the bar rarely had more than 10 people in it and the entertaiment bland by any standards, staff very pleasant, quite a hike from hotel to town, taxis about 7 euros, but a courtesey bus is available, would i return, probably not, a little to quiet in the evening for us, we are Male 60, Female 57.

Situated just outside the centre and with beautiful views from our room. We wanted a sea view but thought the mountain view was better, beautiful at night. Very pleasant stay. Lovely breakfast, but if you are down too late in the mornings the best bread rolls are gone! Rooms comfortable, beds are quite firm. Good stocked mini bar. We had one meal in the buffet restaurant which was very pleasant and reasonable. The Bar was very comfortable and bar meals were great. The indoor pool area with jacuzzi was a warm place to relax if the weather is not warm.
My only minor problem with the hotel is the lack of information in the rooms about local area, hotel facilities, restaurants. Lots of information in reception but it is good to have some to mull over in your own time. It took us a few attempts to find the indoor pool. Would of been good to have a map of the hotel in the room.
If you are not used to walking its a bit of a treck down hill into town but taxis are 6 euros or use the free bus from the hotel or number 45 local bus which stops outside.
We did two day trips around the island which were not cheap but as the weather was poor gave us something to do. There was snow, so some of the roads were closed and mist so we couldnt see the views but the 3 course lunch with wine for 10 euros was excellent.
We did a short trip with the chance of riding in a basket down the hill. Be warned- they wanted 25 euros per couple. We did not have enough cash on us but our tour bus had left for the bottom. We tried to walk down the roads but they were very hard on the knees. A taxi stopped and wanted 10E to go to the end of the ride which was as we found out only a couple of hundred yards on. The tour guide realised that he had told the rest of the coach but not us about cost.
Also beware of the fruit market. Lovely to visit, unusual fruit but you can be easily talked into tasting and buying at high prices. The supermarket is the best place to buy general fruit.
I recomend the cable car ride to the Botanical gardens, a pleasant journey with lovely views and gardens with birds.
Overall we were very pleased with the hotel. They were very thoughtful and left a bottle of fizzy wine and glasses for a birthday.
