This was our second visit. We decided to return after spending our 30th wedding anniversary there two years ago. We had a basic room then which was on the ground floor and had a side outlook. We decided to upgrade this time to a junior suite - wow! This was a real treat for us. The junior suites are in the oldest part of the building and are very elegant (as are all the rooms). This suite (but not them all) had a side balcony and a private roof top one which gave outstanding views. I reckon this was probably the best room in the whole hotel. If you have high expectations you will certainly not be disappointed here. The hotel helped us after Thomas Cook made a real mess of our booking, and as well as replying to my e mail promptly also phoned to discuss my situation - now that's service for you. Overall service is good, meals are delicious, staff are friendly and always polite and helpful. The garden is lovely, pool is always clean and tidy and there is a gym as well as a tennis court. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Upgrade if you can afford it.

We went to this hotel for our honeymoon June 2010. Amazing hotel! Could not fault one thing! Very friendly helpful staff, excellent food, very clean rooms. Would definately stay at this hotel again if we returned to Funchal.

Probably one of the best small hotels ever visited, lovely food, beautiful gardens, world class service and of course Colombo the resident giant tortoise. We are not in the habit of returning to places perviously visited but I would definitely make an exception with the Quinta Jardins do Lago.
I would however advise not take youngsters as in my opinion it suits people more of our age group, I am 66 and my wife 62, perfect or us.

i would like to say my stay at the Jardins Do Lago was most enjoyable, the Superior Garden View room on the
3rd floor with views of the garden were wonderfull!!. inside the rooms were kept clean and tidy at all times.the atmosphere in the hotel was very relaxed and friendley with the staff and management very helpfull. the breakfast was buffet and evening meals 3 course which were delightfull. The garden grounds have variety of trees and plants which would appeal to most and also a giant tortoise called Columbo at night there is bar with piano and playing various music which gives a relaxing end to the evening.
overall a very enjoyable stay at the jardins within easy reach of the old and new town of funchal.

A delightful surprise. I am only too grateful to an old friend who advised me to stay at this Quinta. The decor is charming, the comfort delightful, the staff very friendly and the food excellent. I feel I should also mention the delicious cocktails served at the bar.
Altogether first rate.

This is an excellent relaxing hotel which cleverly combines an original manor house with a more modern bedroom extension. Combined with large botanical gardens this gives a wonderful impression of being in a remnant of the old British Empire! The cleanliness and great service provided by the Madeirans (most of whom speak good English) add to feeling that you have found a hidden gem from a previous age.

With two teenage boys to entertain, as well as my elderly mother, we were a bit concerned that Madeira wouldn't have enough to offer and this may well have proved the case except we thankfully chose to stay at this hotel. The boys swam, sunbathed, played tennis & crocquet, went in the jacuzzi, sauna & steam room, played billiards, used the computer & games box, went to visit Colombo.............

We went outside the hotel each day too and whilst Funchal doesn't have alot to offer the younger generation we spent two whole days seeing the rest of the island driven by the knowledgeable, caring and entertaining Aldo (recommended by the hotel) who we understand speaks six languages and is certainly very fluent in English. We would agree with others that it is far better to have a taxi when needed than hire a car, which would be no cheaper, as the road system is quite challenging.

A word of warning though, Madeira is not set up for disabled visitors in wheelchairs but the inhabitants make up for this by their charm and, a couple of times bodily lifting my mother (no mean feat!) to move her into the right place.

Things we really enjoyed were the cablecar to Monte, the tropical gardens there & basket ride back, seeing the mountain views including the centre of the old volcano, walking along a levada and afternoon tea at Reid's (albeit we were glad we weren't staying there - a bit too pretentious for us and claustrophic compared to our spacious Quinta).

Back at the hotel, potential drawbacks - we believe the hotel should tell you of these in advance - the bed was too hard for my wife (but we see from a review below that it is possible to have a softer mattress); and there was no tea making facility in the bedroom (unless requested - we found out too late). The hotel was very quick to improve the poor water pressure in our bathroom. However, the tennis court surface is cracked in many places albeit we only suffered a few bad bounces.

The food in the hotel is excellent but the dinner menu is not ideal for children. Note there is a good, much cheaper, though plainer and very quiet (apart from the football on their TV!) local restaurant 5 minutes down the road (left at the pizzerria and then first right).

If going back to Madeira we would probably go later in the year when many more flowers would be out, but either way would definitely choose to stay at this hotel again.
