“Wonderful food and excellent service”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

We've recently returned from a great holiday in Quinta Jardins do Lago, and we will definitely be returning. The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff friendly and attentive. The dining room is charming and the Table D'Hote was exemplary every night. Lunch by the pool was perfect. Some people may be put off by the hotel's location, which is somewhat out of the centre of Funchal, but this was not a problem for us. The courtesy bus was easy to use, and the hotel was so pleasant it seemed a shame to go anywhere else. My only criticism is that the gym facilities could be upgraded.
This is not a hotel for young families, but if you are looking for a relaxing holiday with great food, in a small hotel set in a fabulous garden, you can't do much better than this!

We were very much looking forward to our first visit to Quinta Jardines do Lago, we have visited Madeira 19 times and never been disappointed, well this time we were over the moon with this change of hotel, whilst we looked long and hard at changing from our previous hotel having stayed there on 12 occasions, this was superb, well managed and staff who were only too happy to attend to your every need, breakfast again could not be faulted, and certainly everyone was most pleasant and made everyone welcome. Colombo and the Swans certainly made the walk through the gardens an adventure.

The Hotel mini bus was very convenient, and taxis were around £6 into Funchal or back to to hotel in the evenings, well worth very penny.

Don`t think about this hotel any longer, give it a try. FABULOUS

We have just spent a week in this really beautiful hotel and seeing other quintas while visiting their gardens I doubt there was one that could beat Quinta Jardin do Lago. The rooms, facilities, service and particularly the gardens were spectacular. The staff were really charming.
Lunch by the pool could not have been in a better or more relaxing environment, wondering through palms admiring brightly coloured tree blossoms or choosing a new book from the numerous shelves in the comfortably furnished library made it hard to tear yourself away to sight see!
The conversion of this stately residence into a hotel has been done very discretely with the grounds and atmosphere carefully and lovingly preserved. The location is ideal, not too far from the bussle of Funchal but equally far enough from the centre to look out on the lights of the city below and enjoy the peace and quiet.
When looking through the broshures the description "quintessentialy English" jumped out at me. Absolutely, except I do not have palm trees and bananas growing in my garden or a tame 60 year old tortoise. Say hi to Columbus from us and tell him we will be back. He is a very sociable tortoise and likes is neck stroked.

Room Tip: The gardens all overlook the garden and I think any would be good

What a first class hotel - faultless really - we just had a 10 day stay in one of the premier suites (305) and it was a stunning room, spotlessly clean with absolutely nothing to grumble about at all. We stayed B&B and could switch from A La Carte dinner to Table D'Hote as we wished, enjoy lovely snack lunches by the pool in the Colombo Bistro and when we wanted to eat out in Funchal the lovely reception staff could not have done more to make the right reservation, organise a taxi and remember to ask if we enjoyed our meal!

It is a quiet and small hotel, so not for everyone especially as there is little to do in the hotel after dinner (other than drink!) and we did feel that the seating in the bar could be improved so that there was more room for more people but that is only an observation.

The staff were absolutely lovely and all in all we had a thoroughly relaxing and perfect stay. We will be back!

Room Tip: Personally we preferred the new wing of the hotel rather than the old part. Also there are wooden fl...

We had a lovely stay at the Quinta Jardins do Lago. Starting with such a nice welcome at the front desk, which set the tone for the rest of the week. We simply couldn't fault any aspect, from the rooms which were spacious with all facilities, the restaurant with a good menu and nice wines and probably the most important, the service throughout the hotel. Then there is the gardens which are beautiful, as is the pool area. It was very quiet and peaceful and the other guests all seemed friendly. We are mid 50's, there were some younger and older. We could go on......try it, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 211 (Premier suite) which was very very nice. From what we could see all the rooms...

We have just returned from a fortnight at the Quinta Jardins do Lago.

We were celebrating our silver wedding anniversary, so chose a luxury hotel where we could relax. The Quinta is ideal, as they have around 6 acres of gardens and grounds, but just 40 bedrooms. There were lots of quiet corners both inside the hotel, and in the grounds.

Our bedroom, and all of the hotel was spotless.

The staff and service were fantastic. We stayed on half board, and the five course dinner was excellent. You could miss, or substitute a course if you wished. Sensible portion sizes meant you could enjoy all the food.

It has been mentioned by others that the average age of guests was 70+. Well we are 47 and 49, and we weren't the youngest. We found most of the other guests to be very friendly.

Our only minor criticism was that the bar was very quiet after dinner, but it didn't bother us.

Thank you to Ana, Andre, Cristina, Emanuel, Filip, Louisa, Luis, Pedro, Rosa, Sabino, Tania, and all the other staff whose names we didn't get to know. They make the place special.

If you want a small, luxury, friendly hotel, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Go for a superior room on the third floor to get the best views of the gardens.

Our first visit to Madeira and we selected this hotel because of the TA reviews. We were not disappointed. What a gem! I can only confirm everything that's been said before. We had room 302 - a superior room and it was just perfect (just like the one in the brochure.) Our balcony overlooked the beautiful gardens and the ocean beyond. (The gardens were beautiful and so interesting - we kept coming across trees/shrubs we'd never seen before.) Everywhere (inside and out) was spotless and the staff were so friendly, efficient and helpful. It says a lot for a hotel when they can be bothered to remember your name! Our taxi driver from the airport (booked by the hotel) was Esmeraldo Caldeira mobile: 00351 91 86 95 873 who was so informative and all round super guy, that we booked him for an entire day to take us on a tour of the island. He was a mine of information and charged 120 euros, which was exceptionally reasonable. We took taxis into Funchal and these usually cost 7 euros 50 cents. I agree that children might ruin the ambience of the hotel but they do have good children's facilities. With just 40 rooms it was the ideal size for us. If we return to the island we would automatically book to stay at the beautiful Quinta Jardins do Lago because it simply is the best.
