The street which faces most of the hotel is very narrow and there is a similar structure across the street which contains a strip club and a late night grocery. The strip club's hours are from 10 pm until 6:00 am. There is a lot of yelling and general noise on the street until very late. It seems some of the strip club patrons like to sit in front of the grocery and loudly discuss matters while smoking and drinking on the street. The buildings create an echo effect which means hotel guests must close their balcony doors to get any sleep. It's too bad because the breakfast is good. The rooftop pool is great, and the service is impeccable.

Dear Madam,

We inform you that on July 15th the hotel opened with a new owner. We are now Vila Baleira Funchal.

The Vila Baleira group has been present in the Madeira archipelago for 20 years and has been recognized for the quality of its service to its customers, being today a reference on the island of Porto Santo with Vila Baleira Resort Porto Santo and now with the new Vila Baleira Funchal.

However, even 4 years after your stay we would like to inform you that we have opened this new unit and completely renovated services.

We would be delighted to have the opportunity to receive you, as we will be available to make a proposal to visit the two islands of Porto Santo and Madeira.

I would like to thank you, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Group Vila Baleira team.

Regards,

Bruno Martins

We chose this hotel as a post holiday hotel for a couple of nights until our flight back home and we were happy with it as it was clean, bright and airy, friendly and comfortable and in a good location in the popular hotel district. Close to bus stops, trips departing, shops and terrific restaurants.
Reception was bright and airy with friendly reception staff, ample seating in a modern bar area and there is a computer and desk.
We chose to upgrade to a very comfortable suite on 7th floor with a kitchenette and terrific views for 30 euros extra.
There are two good sized lifts, a modern and airy restaurant, a rooftop pool with plenty of lounges, nice small pool, free pool towels and a cafe/bar serving meals, drinks, snacks with seating.
Staff are tidy, professional and friendly and very happy to help.
This hotel offers a good breakfast and i believe very good value and not worthy of any of the negative reviews it may have received. The hot selection was well cooked, hot and presented nicely in the buffet style serving. There was ample fresh baked bread, pastries, cake and conserves to choose from and the cold meat/cheese selection was very good. Yogurts and fruit were plentiful, fresh and restocked very often. Good teas and coffee selection and even a sparkling bottle for those who need their morning fizz. Staff happily made me a fresh decaff coffee. We have enjoyed many hotel breakfasts over the years and this one is certainly worthy of a four star hotel. Chef is also happy with eggs style requests but there are two types of eggs available from scrambled to fried every day.
On the matter of a four star rating, this is a four star hotel, a Premier Inn or Travelodge style would give you a three star and this certainly is not a lodge or hostel style but it is a hotel. It is an adequate four star that meets its standards. It is not luxury or a top end four star that we always enjoy staying in but this hotel is an average to good four star.
Free WiFi, flat screen TV also makes it good value for money and tea making facilities are only a request away.
On the subject of stained carpets and when i read this on tripadvisor prior to our stay i yes panicked as it gave me thoughts of a hostel style accommodation with hygiene problems. The stains are from guests own spilt drinks and have been cleaned up by using the wrong products which has made the bleach style marks on some small areas on the passageway carpets unfortunately but the hotel is very clean and carpets are not scruffy or threadbare.
This hotel has been finished to the standard expected and finished only to that standard, as i said before it is not a resort style hotel or luxury but it provides you with a clean, modern hotel with good standards and is worthy of the 4 stars but it needs to maintain them obviously.
It served us well and ideal as a base and offers some nice relaxation areas at the pool or bar. This is a perfectly acceptable small hotel but it is not luxury or a resort style hotel.
A problem we had was efficiently sorted out promptly and happily.

Room tip: higher floors can offer less noise from street

Although in a good location for restaurants, buses, shops etc., this hotel is nothing special. My room was nice enough, with a fridge and small safe. There are lots of TV channels available, some in English. The best was Fox Crime which showed UK programmes such as Vera, Lewis, Prime Suspect and Endeavour. Sky News, CNN and BBC World, together with US films were also available. The bed was fairly comfortable, but the pillows are useless. I was glad I had my own travel pillow. Bedding was clean and changed several times during my week's stay. The air conditioning was very efficient and quiet and the free wifi was very good. My balcony overlooked a steep side road, and never got any sun. I found that I had to use earplugs at night because the outside traffic noise was so loud. The best part of this hotel for me was the breakfast. Lovely fresh fruit selection, very nice breads, good bacon, eggs, tomatoes, baked beans, mushrooms, and, best of all, some little custard tarts made with filo pastry, which are a local speciality I believe. I would like to know the story behind that green carpet in all the corridors. It looks as if someone has dribbled bleach and paint all over it. Truly dreadful. Staff on reception and the maid service were friendly and helpful.

Room tip: Higher rooms may be less noisy

The hotel was clean and the staff pleasant enough and the location and pool area is nice. I went in October so not peak season but no pool service you had to ring a bell and wait for someone, no towels as stated so I used my hotel room one.
The beds are extremely hard and the sheets don't fit properly so move and end up a crumpled mess and an annoyance. Also the rooms are very noisy with bin lorries at 11pm and 3am most nights. Also there is a bar with live music outside across the road which is very noisy some evenings as well. Breakfast was very basic, if you don't want to eat bread or cereal then it's really limited as the hot food is much to be desired.

We have just returned from a week's stay at The Lince in Lido area of Funchal. Situated on the corner of Estrada Monumental (main thoroughfare) it is in a great location. Opposite or very close to some excellent restaurants, short walk from the Lido area itself and the ocean and easily a walkable distance (albeit a good walk!) from the Forum Shopping center and the center of Funchal.

The hotel is, however, a little shabby round the edges. The furniture in the bar has seen better days and the corridor carpets are awful and desperately need changing. However, the bedrooms are lovely, clean and airy and well laid out. There is free wifi throughout the hotel and a fridge, safe, lovely comfy beds (awful pillows though!) but no indoor pool and the gym is just 3 pieces of equipment in a very small room. The bathrooms could also benefit from refurbishment but you cannot fault the cleanliness and maid service. The breakfast was ok. Choice of breads, pastries, fresh fruit, usual hot items but not overwhelming choice or particularly thrilling!

All in all, for a short stay or just to use as a base, this hotel is nice enough and the staff are lovely, pleasant and very helpful but a 4 star ......it really isn't.

Room tip: Ask for room away from road side as quite noisy.
