Antonio was keen to get us to try his restaurant (as were all the other restaurants on this main drag). He was very pleasant.
We the fixed price 3 course menu where there was a choice.
It was pleasant to sit out and soak up the atmosphere on our first night.
The meal was acceptable but nothing out of the ordinary.

We had a meal here on our first night. I had a minute filet of sea bream . And my partner had sardines. Both lots of fish were stale and had an unpleasant taste. The garlic potatoes had been preboiled, allowed to go cold and then fried with garlic. They were black in places and cold in the middle. The salad served with our meals was acceptable. When asked what we thought of the meal, I felt I had to tell the truth. The reply was that fresh fish was impossible with the stormy, windy weather as the fishermen could not go out. If this is the case, we would sooner not be offered "fresh fish". Happily every other meal we had during our say in Funchal has been good.

This was our favourite eaterie in Funchal - Antonio was a great host - welcoming, amusing, charming, friendly, generous and full of fun - nIce intimate informal little restaurant in attractive old town location - the 3 course set menu was excellent value at just 15.5 euros - very tasty and filling - we ate there twice in our week away and would have gone on our last night but it was a Sunday and closed - perhaps Antonio was at church!

We discovered this lovely bar/restaurant at the end of our stay. I think we would have visited more often if we had tried it at the beginning of the week. It is located in a lovely spot in the old town, perfect to sit with a drink and snack and watch the world go by. The owner was friendly and interesting to talk to and not the rude man others have referred to. We only are snacks but they were freshly prepared and delicious. Very reasonably priced food and drink. Would not hesitate to try the set menu in the evening when we return next year.

Found this place on a wander through the streets of the old quarter of Funchal. The fixed price menu seemed good value at 15 Euros and although he had to apologise that the dessert course wasn't ready - and did reduce the bill accordingly, the rest of the meal was very acceptable Situated in a small street near and old chapel it provided some welcome local colour after a few days of "international cuisine" on a cruise ship. We had the local fish - the espada which was served with a good selection vegetable and in a fruity sauce. Probably wouldn't have selected it from a menu description but then would have missed on a great local dish
