We visited O Avo on the basis of the trip advisor reviews and were delighted with the find. As my title said - everything you want - great food - freshly prepared and cooked to order - using local produce. There was a great atmosphere - mainly brought about by the owner - a very amusing South African - who managed to get everyone eating - talking together! - He was the life and soul of the place. As others have said - this is a great bar - that also does some food - and it was great to see the locals using the place - a couple of police officers called in for a drink whilst we were there ;-)... We were sad to have found O Avo towards the end of our holiday - otherwise we would have certainly eaten there again. Fantastic value too - we had fish and a drink for Euro 17 (for two of us). Worth seeking out....

Found this by chance during the day the football final was on.Impressed by the scarves and asked if we could reserve a table for the evening,Sure enough we stayed and had a meal and watched the football..Party of locals were outside and very busy and the service was so good and organised.
.Different from the night before at O TASCO in the old town where it was like fawlty towers.Pity we did not find this earlier in the week...

My wife and I stopped by this restaurant for an early lunch. We were warmly welcomed by the friendly host. Although serving was getting into full swing, he made ample time to chat to us. There was only a small choice on the menu but the value was amazing - 15 euros for two meals including drinks. The food was wholesome - nothing fancy but portion sizes were ample. There were several tables outside under parasols as well as a few indoors. The owner has a sizeable collection of football scarves (yet to have one from the mighty Southampton FC however!) as well as a collection of beers from around the world. It certainly was a fun place to have lunch and, as such, worth seeking out.

The guy, who's father's name was Ferdinando, served us.He is the current owner of the restaurant. His knowledge of football/everything else is outstanding. Entertaining in many ways. As I stated, it was not the best meal of all times, but the service just makes it up to anything missing. Besides, working on a cruise ship, allowed me to be in places one can only have great meals... so, comparing this experience to some of the places I visited would be unfair. However, the way the food and drinks were presented exceeds all's expectations... it is hospitality 101... this is how it should be everywhere! Thanks for a memorable experience! We'll be back in Funchal and it's a definite visit next time.. every time!

We were looking for somewhere to have lunch and went in when we saw that the customers were all locals. A few tables on the pavement and more inside. It would be very cosy if all had been occupied but it was early and therefore relatively quiet. The only waiter recited the menu to us and took our order. He was kept busy and never had time to stop for breath but he was a real live-wire.

The food was very good, although my fish was not as hot as it might have been, and the price included a glass of wine or bottle of water and a slice of cake for dessert. My husband had a second glass of wine, which cost only 1 Euro and he said it was pretty decent wine.

This place is more of a bar than a restaurant but it has plenty of atmosphere and we would certainly go there again.
