Owner description: Founded by royal charter of D. Sebastiao in 1569, the Jesuits' College of Funchal marked, throughout the centuries, the lives of the inhabitants of Madeira Island. For more than 400 years of history, it served a number of tenants, from British invaders to the University of Madeira, coming to serve as a military facility and a number of schools. Despite its military applications, it has always kept a close relationship with education. Portrayed as "one of the most remarkable buildings that exist in the island" by historian and professor at the University of Madeira Rui Carita, the Jesuits' College of Funchal is the stage of a cultural and scientific awareness project lead by the Students' Union meant for both local residents and visitors of the region. The inauguration of another Gaudeamus - AAUMa Academic Store at the entrance of the College was the starting point of its opening for the general public. Added to it was a circuit of autonomous tours of the College, as well as monthly gatherings for Coimbra Fado and a service of guided tours, whose circuit includes reserved areas of the University of Madeira Rectory, among others. The Students' Union has also published The Jesuits' College of Funchal - A History, by Rui Carita, a book that narrates the history of the College, its tenants and its transformations throughout the centuries. These are projects that, above all, show the spirit of this institution, which benefits from a precious asset both scarce and undervalued in this country; the volunteer work and the dedication of a solid team. Everyone's contribute will be vital, even if in the form of a simple visit to our store. Only then will we be able to continue financing all of the projects that we have to offer to both our associates and the population, whether free of charge or under a symbolic price.

Reviewed 23 June 2014

Visited Saturday afternoon and had an interesting hour wandering through the Tardis of a building. The varied history of the building was expertly provided by our student guide with both informative comment and humour.
Well worth a visit and only a step from the centre of Funchal. Tour cost five Euro per person.

“A well hidden secret!”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Wonderful tour and excellent university student guides. Everyone extremely friendly. The College is around the corner from Jesuit Church in centre of Funchal, They are not allowed to put up notices advertising themselves, so it is not an obvious place to visit by chance. The tour is free, but donations are most welcome and any profit from this or from the excellent (high quality goods) shop help to suppor poor students at the university; for some of them this means that they are given a free meal a day, for others, the tuition fees (approx 1,000 euros a year) would be impossible to raise without this help.

“Best value coffee stop in town”
Reviewed 9 December 2013

The college offers the best value food and beverages in Funchal in the most pleasant of historic surroundings. Large comfy sofas and tranquilly abounds. Often discovered by chance. Locals flock to the college for lunch and breaks which is a clear indication of its value for money tag. Selection is limited but good quality. Madeira offers many options throughout for coffee and snacks but rarely in such a special setting. If visiting the bodegas of the area or local major churches then the college is a perfect stop for a coffee. If time permits a walk around the college is a great idea.

“A jewel box of a church in the city centre”
Reviewed 10 October 2013

Forget the Cathedral (Se) this is the church to visit in the centre of Funchal. Gilded carvings from floor to ceiling with beautiful tiled walls in the side chapels, painted timber ceiling plus lovely baptistery, well worth a visit. watch out however for the beggars at the doorway who can be quite intimidating if your not used to this outside your local church

“excellent tour”
Reviewed 7 September 2013

An excellent tour and our tour guide, one of the university students - Ruben Castro was an excellent guide who is obviously very proud of his college and knew his subject well. A lovely way to spend a Saturday morning away from some of the commercialisation of funchal. The college has been restored beautifully but is also used by the students of Madeira university.
