“Surprised”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

Our first time in Madeira. We were not sure what we had arrived at to begin with, but after two days we found it pleasant and though not what we expected, we were happy with it. The room was on the 8th floor, it had a small cooking area, with fridge, microwave, hot plates, coffee maker, small bedroom area and balcony. Noise at night was a bit loud, but when as close to other properties, it is expected, view was facing west which gave us the evening sun and a bit of sea view. It was easy to talk to the locals who explained about the Island and it's financial problems and a large drop in the tourist industry, this put what we saw into understanding conditions. We had gone to Cyprus last year and our treatment in a 5 star hotel was very poor and were ripped off at every opportunity. This Hotel though 3 star was more homely and the staff very pleasant. Food acceptable, we had gone for 1/2 board but could eat out in a many of restaurants within easy reach if we wished. The small supermarket on the next corner provided us with provisions. The town was within easy walking distance. We will be returning again and to the same hotel and maybe the same room. After reading some of the reviews, the last one about cockroaches, one should have a look at the restaurants in the U.K. then criticise. Its not a perfect world.

Room Tip: Decide what you want in a room, remember it is a highly populated area not a stand alone hotel and t...

Although we requested a high up room with sea view, our first night was spent in a 6th floor low down room on west side at rear of building. With a lack of day light, it was a very depressing room. Could not have stayed here for 14 nights especially with dogs barking most of night. The wife freaked out after finding a cockroach in bathroom during the night. After some haggling, we were allocated room 1004 on east side. What a difference. Lovely and bright with a great sea view. Plenty room with bedroom, livingroom, kitchen & bathroom plus two balconies. (Some traffic noise but wax type earplugs do the trick) Unfortunately, the place is let down with its dowdy type decor and furnishing. It must have seemed fab in the 1970's. There are still old CRT TV's. It seems that they are being replaced with flat screens as they go belly up. Quite good selection of TV channels though. The corridors could do with more modern lighting to take away the feel of being in some sort of institution. The place definitely needs a make over to drag it into the 21st century. This said, the rooms are attended to every day with regular changes of towels and bedding. The pool area is fare. The location is good with plenty restaurants and bars. For self-catering fans, the Pingo Doce supermarket up the road does great cooked food for take away or eat in.

Room Tip: I would say the higher up you are on the East side, the better, with room numbers ending in 01 to 05...

I stayed at hotel Florasol room 215 from october 23 to 28, 2013 .When I saw my room I got a deja vu feeling, back to Las Palmas 1966 .Same dark furniture and door, same plumbing in bathtub ,old tiles, but sink and toilet was new. I left my room at 8.30 the two first days, when I came back at 15.00 my room was still not cleaned both days. I went to the pool on 4 th floor and asked for a towl, I was told to go to the first floor ,pay 10 euro deposit for the towl and get it there. When I asked the lady in charge if she had heard about trip advisor, she became pale and told me I would get the towl in pool the area without deposit ,and asked if I wanted to change room ! The breakfast was bad, canned fruit and antique toaster,10 minutes eggs.Never again !

We arrived on the 16th.September for a 21 night stay on a haif board basis not knowing what to expect as we had read mixed revues on various web sites. However we were quite pleased to find that the room we were allocated on the second floor was very ciean and well furnished with
comfortable twin beds, plenty of drawer space, dressing table and two nice chairs. We had a small kitchenette and fridge and as we like to make a cup of tea in the morning we asked for an electric kettle which was brought immediately to our room. The bathroom was ideal with a four piece suite, over bath shower and plenty of hot water was always available.Towels could be changed at any time when requested. The rooms were cleaned daily by very efficient maids.
The air conditioning worked very efficiently which was very pleasing.
We asked for an ironing board and iron which once again was supplied immediately.
The resaurant was very clean and pleasant and you were able to dine inside or out on the roof terrace. The meals were buffet style.some very nice salad items and varying kinds of meats and fish from day to day.Always fresh fruit salad daily.
At breakfast there was an excellent choice of fresh breads and the usual continental items, and some very nice fruit juices and coffee.
The swimmig pool was on the same floor as the restaurant and the recreation area.plenty of sunbeds and towels available from reception.
The hotel is located in a pleasant area overlooking the sea. There is a good supermarket and lots of restaurants nearby.Next to the hotel entrance is a travel agency where island excursions can be booked but if you wish to go into town, the hotel runs a free courtesy bus which goes every hour except 1pm
Considering that the Floriana is a 3 star hotel we were very satisfied with our stay and thought it was good value for money.
.

Room Tip: ask for a room with air conditioning

We booked a twin room, half board for 2 adults. We were on the 2nd floor overlooking the road (which lucky for us was closed) so noise wasn't too bad. The room smelt musty when we arrived & the furniture was a throw back to the 70's. The beds were very uncomfortable & we had to ask for different mattresses, due to no other rooms available. We were given toppers (1 adult & 1 child - we are 2 adults in the room??) Breakfast was ok if you like cheese, ham, boiled egg, scrambled eggs, Frankfurt type sausage and beans or mushrooms every day - no good if you have a problem with cholesterol. Dinner was no better...actually it was a buffet each evening that was not fit for service. We had to spend more money to go out & get food. The younger restaurant staff of the hotel were very helpful, however there is one older staff member who I thought was the manager (he wasn't) he was very rude & miserable and definitely should not be in such a customer facing role! Never have I been to a hotel so disorganised!! We had to ask for towels to use by the pool each day & for 4 of those days we were told there were none even though the hotel was half empty! This hotel is NOT 3*.....I give it 0*

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 5 (or higher) floor Check your bed - is it comfortable? Don't stay half...

It’s with a feeling of sadness that we verify that your stay at our hotel was not as you desired. We will check what happened during your stay to correct the flaws detected.

Regarding the breakfast and dinner, we are making some changes in the menu in a way of trying pleasing the majority of our guests. At the time of your stay, our hotel occupancy was around 90%, and because of that the towels from the pool suffered a small rupture of stock.
Thank you for your comment and we will use it to help correct the flaws detected.

Best regards

If you are expecting a 3 star hotel experience then this is probably not the hotel for you; however if you expect a comfortable bed, reasonable breakfast buffet, adequate bathroom facilities and don't want to pay much more than the price of a youth hostel then you will enjoy your stay.
On the plus side, our room was a decent size and had a great view of the sea, the kitchen facilities were basic but we managed to cook a few meals here to save money.
However there were a few negatives:
no hot water for the first 24hours - hotel did their best to sort this
no air conditioning in the room, leaving the windows open kept the room cool but meant we heard a lot of outside noise
bathroom was rather shabby and had no ventilation or extractor fan
