“Superb Location, sad old Gorghulo”
Reviewed 7 July 2011

Superb location. Ideal to stroll along sea front, walk into Funchal along main road or take bus from stop a few seconds walk from hotel. There are shops, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, shopping mall nearby, places to book tours. Gorghulo Staff were willing to do very best to help, friendly & spoke English. Good dinner menu, well cooked & delicious food. Madeiran locals we had contact with were charming poeple and spoke good English.

Company we booked with stated in brochure they employ people to personally check all holiday accommodation. Knowing that we booked the Gorghulo in good faith. Prior to booking, as always we checked reviews on Trip Advisor. Another guest who stayed there in 2010, advised:- "This has to be the ugliest hotel on Madeira". Regrettably no facts or detail to put us off. Going over Christmas time this was not a cheap holiday booking.

On arrival, in the attractive Gorghulo Reception area we both agreed 'yes, this looks a fine hotel', the clean, modern decor impressed us. Then making our way to our room our hearts sank into our boots! We were struck with realisation this hotel was like nothing we had seen before and not three star standard. We saw tiles missing off the sides of the hotel building and structural metal revealed. We wondered if hotel could withstand an earth quake. In communal areas sheets permanently lay to absorb water entering through the sides of the building, broken floor tiles, a hazard for someone walking barefoot or catching high heels in holes. The wooden panelled ceiling of the restaurant looks as if panels are about to slip or have fallen and not been put back evenly in places. With no heating or double glazing the restaurant was so cold we occasionally wore coutdoor coats while eating.

Our room did nothing to raise our spirits. Skirting boards had ingrained dirt, the tired carpet needed a vacuume, the blankets and pillows smelled of stale perspiration from previous occupants, mattresses on single beds were stained (both sides) and mattresses had no protective cover only a worn thin sheet to be slept on. In the bathroom grouting was missing between tiles, area of black mildew, the towels were worn one with a hole, The paintwork was chipped/flaking. We immediately advised the Receptionist that we were not happy with the room nor, in fact, the hotel building which we did not consider should be called three star. We were told no other room was available at that time. Cleaner was instantly sent to our room to clean, change blakets, pillows and sheets. During the night we were disturbed by refuse collections from hotel bins, which our 'quiet' room over looked and dogs frequently barked. One night the fire alarm went off few times due to the weather we were informed. Hair dryer borrowed from Reception was broken but it worked intermittently; think there's only one available

At first opportunity, we spoke with holiday company Representaitive about our complaints. She spoke with the Hotel Manager. On the second day another room became available, one of only two we were told that had been refurbished. We accepted the change of room but could still not enjoy the holiday. In second room mattresses were also stained and as before our sleep continued to be disturbed every night due mainly to windows and doors rattling in the wind, those we dealt with by inserting wedges of card board/paper, Kitchenette surfaces had layer of dust. A storm in the early hours made it necessary to put towels around our room windows to soak up water, a deluge of water poured like a waterfall through gaps around kitchenette window and needed many towels to soak up and avoid ruining our personal belongings. In both rooms we did our best to make ourselves feel as comfortasble as possible, remade our beds with a blanket underneath our sheets. On the last morning there was an opportunity to show the Head Houskeeper a heavy black dust laden cob web plus dust in wardrobe, there when we took the room and still undisturbed at end of the week..

Booked after seeing holiday package advertised on Teletext. Travelled with friend, both have years of experience of wide range holiday of all types of accommodation around the world so when booking a three star hotel we expected to enjoy Christmas with general comforts of this standard. No warning or advice given that this hotel was a budget hotel, had no double glazing, no central heating no air conditioning, needs maintenance, repair work and furnishings and linen replacing in addition to this Astro Turf on part of pool area had unhealthy looking black algae, not shown in advertising photo.

Prior to leaving we requested to speak with the Hotel Manager. We complimented him on the excellent staff of the Gorghulo, he listened to our complaints and had an opportunity to explain why this hotel is in such a state. Hotel Manager explained the reasons and added that double glazing was planned to be put in this year.

On return from holiday we contacted Customer Service of the holiday company to complain and asked for the Managing Director to be made aware of what we had experienced, believing he would wish to protect the name of his company and do something positive to avoid other holiday makers being so disappointed. As far as I am aware nothing has been done .

Gorghulo could be a wonderful hotel and may have been when it was first built in the 60's. Other guests from the UK and Germany voiced similar opinions personally to us but, like many, probably will not take the time or trouble to complaint or pass a review to help to impove standards. Comments were made which I would not lke to repeat. We have given the facts according to our experiences. To any person thinking of booking, do so if you get a cheap deal and don't mind conditions mentioned as you will have good service from the lovely staff, excellent food (our opinion) and a most convenient location on this beautiful island.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that has been renovated, has double glazing if fitted by now.

ok I read the reviews and was a bit apprehensive but my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and the island of Madeira.Lovely sea views, friendly "mature staff" good breakfast. The hotel was close to all bus routes and local restaurants/bars which was a bonus
The island is a bit hilly for people of a certain age but would go again and recommend to friends and family

Although undoubtedly ugly and in serious need of re-decoration, this hotel is spotlessly clean. The staff (particularly in the restaurant) are all extremely friendly and efficient. We were made to feel very welcome. Breakfast was very good with lots of choice and good opening hours 07.30 to 10.30 a.m. Dinner not so good - apart from a couple of evenings - but more than adequate.

The pool area is quite shabby but, again, really clean and the hotel provide towels. Lots of sun beds so plenty of availability.

Although the hotel is on a busy road junction, it is ideally situated for Funchal. Local buses stop outside as do the open air tour buses. Transport offers real value for money. It takes about 25 minutes to walk into the centre.

Seaview rooms (odd numbers) are the best as they are away from the traffic, bar and dog barking noise!

Room Tip: Ask for a seaview room (odd numbers)

OK you have probably read the reviews so you know by now that this is not the Reid’s Palace. Here we have a basic no frills hotel for people on a budget. I stayed in a twin studio room 10th floor with sea views on a bed and breakfast basis in May, The room cost £210 for the week for two people, that works out at £15 per person per night. I think we got more than we paid for. The rooms were small but spotless. We had a balcony with great views of the ocean and Funchal town. We could watch the cruise ships sailing into the harbour. We had a small kitchenette with a sink, two ring hob and fridge which was useful. The room was cleaned every day. The staff was friendly and helpful and the breakfast was fairly good.

First the bad points,

The beds were very firm; I personally found them a little uncomfortable as I prefer something a little softer.
The décor was a little tired.
There was only one power point in the room which the TV plugged into. If you wanted to plug in a hairdryer or phone charger then you need to crawl on hands and knees under the desk, unplug the TV to use the one available socket.
The good points
Location. It couldn’t be better situated. The hotel is right in the middle of the hotel district with lots of restaurants and bars surrounding it. It’s a 15 to 20 minute stroll into Funchal town, or, there are several buses which seem to run every 10 minutes or so.
The hotel is clean and has great views.
Value, this hotel is great value for money. With budget airlines now flying into Madeira and hotels at these prices Madeira has become very affordable.

I would recommend this hotel if you want clean and simple and are on a budget. If you want a few more luxuries and can afford to spend a lot more money then you should try elsewhere. I would recommend you stay on a bed and breakfast basis as the breakfast buffet is worth the small amount you pay for it. I wouldn’t stay half board though as there are so many really nice restaurants within walking distance which are reasonably priced.
I think this hotel is excellent value and apart from the hard beds I have no complaints.

Room Tip: Try to stay in a seaview room not landside

I stayed in this hotel together with my wife, we both enjoyed it very much. As bonuses I would name location (50m from busstop, plenty of good restaurants around), good english breakfast and friendly staff. Also a plus is a swimming pool. I agree that hotel itself is a little bit aged and could use some refurbishment, however rooms/hotel is clean and pleasant.

Room Tip: Ask for room facing the ocean.
