“Do not stay here!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

It was my fault, I booked a cheap internet deal but the photos looked lovely.
On first site it looked like a block of workers flats in East Germany, pre Berlin wall falling. A concrete monstrosity partly covered in blue and white tiles. The Reception area was inviting so we thought, hey ho, ugly on the outside but lovely within. How wrong were we? The room(308) was big and had a pool and sea view, it had a kitchen (70€ extra) and a reasonable bathroom. However, it was threadbare, curtains motheaten, walls peeling, plaster loose, doors sticking. It was clean though. The balcony was OK but had broken tiles.
The pool areas should have been nice but the pool bottoms were black and in serious need of attention, there was also no umbrellas and no shade. Also, no poolside bar or snack facility.
Fortunately we spent a lot of time out inFunchal and Madeira itself so really only used the room for sleeping, but its always nice to have a decently furnished and well decorated room ypto wake up in, don't you think?
The place around was also incredibly noisy. Bars/restaurants nearby, kitchen staff below and the bins, even a barking dog and annoying parrot in house next door!
At one point at night, about 11pm I had to shout SILENCIO from the balcony to shut the staff up down below.
All in all, not a place I would ever consider staying at again although Madeira and Funchal are marbellous

I think it is fair to say 3 stars in Europe is very different to 3 stars in the UK.

The location of this hotel is amazing, the staff friendly, the views from the balcony fab and the breakfast had a decent variety of hot and cold food, although it didn't change from day to day.

The downsides though are that it's really dated. There is no luxury to this hotel, not even soap or shower gel in the bathroom. Towels were torn and threadbare and the windows/doors didn't shut properly. The pools are also falling apart and all the paint is peeling off the bottom-not an appealing thought for actually getting in.

If you literally want a basic base or are a group on a sports trip, this hotel is fine, if you want anything more, best spend a few quid extra and go for a slightly more expensive one, that may even provide shower gel!

Room Tip: The main road is busy and noisy so try and get a room nearest the sea

Since last time, I still say that its location is great and is still a great place to stay, however is showing the signs of its age, rooms are really tired and pool looked grimy.... Restaurant is in big need of refurb.

But as I said still an ok place to stay, but if not refurbished won't keep up long.

It’s very cheap to stay here, and is reflected in a bit of wear and tear to the decor (broken tiles, marked carpet etc.) but it’s great, very clean, large rooms, great balcony, get one facing the Atlantic with views to Funchal and the mountains and of course out to sea. Our room had a TV with 4-5 English channels, fridge, and cooker rings, and all the utensils inc bottle opener and cork screw, however no kettle. The breakfast is good and plentiful, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, beans and frankfurters, with plenty of bread, toast & cakes, fruit and cereals and serves till 10:30. But the most important thing is the ideal location of the hotel, The Lido area is on your doorstep, a great supermarket is 2 minutes away down the hill towards the Lido, with loads of restaurants and cafes also, try the O Dragoeiro on Rua da Casa Branca up a little side road opposite the bus stop, great for lunch for 7.90 Euro for grilled fish or meat with chips and veg, and sit in their lovely well-kept garden. There are loads of 5* hotels around this area so you can pop in and use their facilities too, also the aero bus stops outside the hotel and cost 5 euro and takes 40 minutes. 30 minutes’ walk to Funcahl old town, a boring walk though as you can’t go along the coast but via the main road, get the bus instead, 4 or 5 buses stop outside the hotel. I would definitely book this hotel again. Location, location, location is spot on.

Room Tip: front facing the sea

The location is ideal, and the views are lovely, but the hotel itself is very basic, 60's style decor which is not of a very good standard. The bed linen and towels whilst clean are worn and past their sell by date. The hotel is surrounded by many restaurants to eat at, and is within easy walking distance of Funchal itself, locating it from the airport/ autovia is quite a feat, but just head for the Lido and look for the ugliest tower block still standing, decorated with blue and white tiles.
They do not supply a kettle, nor hair dryer, and whilst everyone else said the staff were friendly, we beg to differ, I do not think we got two words out of them.
The restaurants surrounding the hotel are the full range from very cheap to expensive, and we found we could still pick up the wi fi from the yacth bar on our balcony.

Room Tip: We did ask for a room as high as possible but were given the fourth floor? Make sure you take your o...

The must rank as the ugliest hotel in the world!! But don't be put off, inside it is spotless, yes it's a bit shabby however the price we paid for 9 nights b/b for 2 was £366 so we weren't expecting the Ritz.

Our room was on the 9th floor and had fabulous veiws over the Atlantic Ocean and the town of Funchal.

The breakfast was fine plenty of choice. All the staff were friendly.

The surround ing area had plenty of bars and restaurants. Bus stop directly outside hotel; we bought a weekly bus pass and just hopped on and off as we needed. The stop for the Aerobus from the airport was directly outside the terminal and cost just 5 euros (9 euros for return) this stops just opposite the hotel (Stop no 13) so tranfers are simple.

We would certainly return here again, great value for money.
